I saw the surfing as he does something active. It might have been self promotion but I don't care. How much of the 13+ minutes was that? It was like an ad then got the discussion.

You dont care that elected officials are spending tax dollars on having a video crew go out to the beach to film this guy surf?

How does this benefit the loot box issue?

Is thus a clever way of showing how politicians piss away tax dollars the same way players throw money away at loot boxes?

    just wow....

You have proof that tax dollars were spent on that video? Please define how the excerpt at the beginning would be considered self promotion? I don't remember seeing any requests for donations or any other personal gain requests in regards to surfing or his other hobbies. Revealing bits of your life in a documentary is not what I would call self promotion if the underlying and overt message is to get active on the subject being discussed in the video.

Clearly there is self promotion, but I don't care. All that concerns me he is pushing the issue which is turning gaming into a slot machine.

... and all we get from people thinking that loot boxes are the equivalent to a slot machine is the re-surfacing of the debate of whether violence in video games is sculpting the minds of our youth. In fact, it's so bad that there is already a bill being proposed in Rhode Island that would add a 10% tax onto mature games. See! This is the precedent that the loot box legislation is setting. Because if a loot box can somehow change the physiology of our brain, then OBVIOUSLY violence in video games must, right? NO!! There's no evidence to suggest that even though they have been doing studies for decades now.

Precedent. It's a horrible precedent that is now shaping up to cost American tax payers into the BILLIONS. So, congrats. Mission accomplished... I guess?

Honestly, gamers need to just grow some balls and ACTUALLY not spend money on loot boxes. If you don't like it, just say so! Don't claim something that simply isn't true or supported by any scientific results.

The lootboxes debate has nothing to do with the violence in video games "debate". The only reason the violence in video games thing came up is because of the recent tragedy in a school. Every single time a tragedy happens like this one of the instant culprits Republicans and NRA members blame are video games. The video game blame part of this will pass in a couple of months just like it does and has every other time.

Yeah it sucks that the government is starting to get involved in the industry when it comes to monetization and lootboxes because they are involved at all. Personally, I would rather them be involved and scare the industry into getting rid of lootboxes then just be sad that they are involved at all.

I agree with you, but the problem is that in it's current state it specifically points to video games as impacting the development of young gamers. So, as written, if it were to pass then it could set a precedent that could be used to push through additional legislation surrounding other bills related to games, such as taxing violent video games.

I'm not saying it's logical, I'm just saying that the climate is right for someone to claim that violent video games are the cause of everything wrong in America, despite the fact that these issues are almost exclusively an American problem compared to the rest of the world. This most recent bill only goes to show how the government will capitalize on almost anything they can, even something as tragic as a school shooting. Like, seriously, what will you do with that money collected from game sales?

Do you really think that politicians could possibly scare video game developers into changing? Let's not forget that it's quite clear how much it takes to buy politicians. The NRA has shown that. So, what? A mere $30 million to Trump's re-election campaign makes all this go away? That's fucking table scraps from the $4 billion that Activision brought in last year.

No, it won't. Violence in video games is about art due to there being no proof at all that video games cause violence, outside of the few minutes you get mad when your friend beats you in Street Fighter or losing a match of Hearthstone. They can't do anything to it other then attempt to tax it, but they can't do that because they don't tax other things like it so they really have no ground to stand on. Again, very unlikely due to the constitution. They don't tax porn, movies, or television in that way for the same reason. The same reason this will just be a short lived debate is due to the same reason that it was for Music, Art, DANCING, and hell....BOOKS.

The reason that gambling is something that they can absolutely be forced to inform people about is because it already is. The main barrier right now is that they are not legally defined as gambling. That is what they are pushing for here. If it is defined as gambling, then normal gambling laws would take effect. The main requirements being the age of 21 and the disclosure of odds.

I just read this as someone trying to be the most virtuous on these forums. Why make a fuss about something very minor that isn't related to the main issue? If presentation of yourself and your cause isn't important, Nixon would never have lost the 1960s campaign after the televised debate with Kennedy ;) (FYI the radio listeners declared Nixon the winner)

Just to toss in a little extra insight into the surfing thing.. For calendar year 2016. Hawai'i's tourism industry established new records in total visitor spending and visitor arrivals. ... State Tax Revenue: $1.82 billion (+$129.9 million YOY versus 2015) Not just self promotion, but promotion of the state he represents. Seems ok to me. http://hawaiitourismauthority.org/default/assets/File/HTA%20Tourism%20Econ%20Impact%20Fact%20Sheet%20(with%20December%202016%20data).pdf On a side note... Holy fucking hell when are you guys gonna fix this train-wreck of forum software?

What he is doing is selling himself - so he can advance in his political career.

How far can someone advance their political career by surfing or going after loot boxes?

It's my old sparring partner from the loot box thread. :)

No doubt there will be those who try to draw such parallels, I think that they will fail in doing so.  There have been many studies into the connection between video games and violence and as far as I know every single one has found no correlation.

But politicians will find an excuse if they think there are votes in it, regardless of the facts. They don't need the issue of gambling in gaming to bring this up again and again, they don't need it to get a law passed.

Since we stated our discussions you have claimed in one way or another that players and now legislators focusing in on gambling in gaming will be the end of gaming as we know it, maybe the end of gaming? This is a level of drama I would only expect to see on social media, this is not the end of the world.

Yeah this is important, not the massive opioid and meth problem in Hawaii. I bet you cab count in one hand how many people "loot boxes" effect there. It would be like Florida going after ski industry.

You do realize there's nothing that says politicians can't pursue multiple policy goals simultaneously, right?

In fact, that's exactly how it works.  All the time.  At all levels.

Hawaii has roughly 1.3m people with 900k+ of them living on Oahu (third largest island). By your logic only about 5 out of 1.4m people are affected. Now if you use this same logic and applied it to the entire US, that would be about 1300 people of the 330m that are affected by this.
