Whenever you really want to sell a game as being "hardcore" using a pic such as the one in OP will do it every time.
No, the 'Role' in role playing is not derived from a class 'role' in a group. It literally refers to acting out a role as an actor would.
Don't forget that role playing predates role playing games.
I'm ok with sounding a bit nitpicky on this, it's almost as frustrating as people calling them 'Roll playing games' because dice are rolled, or thinking 'Rangers' are called Rangers because they attack from ...range.
Although I have to admit, I called 'Role Master' for 'Roll Master' for a bit after creating my first character in that system to tease my new DM. For a beginner in 'Role Master', I found it overwhelming and so many dice rolls had to be made compared to what I was used to. But it was interesting to try it out.
