Sea of Thieves News - Rare has revealed the first details of the Sea of Thieves Day 1 update that is quite literally...a patch or, more accurately, an eye patch for players because what good is a PIRATE without an eyepatch? One savvy Redditor noticed that the SoT clothing shop has an eye patch with DAY 1 scrawled on it. The eyepatch description reads, "A message in a bottle from Jolly Jefabell washed ashore. Eye patch makers read it and said 'aye."

You may pay more in the long run if you decide to buy it, but it is better than losing $60 of you don't like it.
Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy?
Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!
I dunno, they didn't do a very good job of marketing this thing, so I know very little that entices me. I need to know more before I drop $60 on it.
So the final beta for Sea of Thieves has now come and gone and I wanted to post some thoughts about it. The game is very beautiful. Rare has really created something special in this game. I have rarely been so taken with a games visuals. The rolling ocean during a storm, the sound of thunder as I skirt the edges. The tremendous waves when I'm silly enough to sail into the middle of one. Also the tranquility of a calm sea and a gentle wind. The slight creaking of the ropes as I turn to approach the island I'm sailing too. The fish lazily swimming in the lagoon I'm anchored in. Or when I realize I'm sailing way too fast into somewhere and I panic drop my anchor and the loud GROAN of the wood as my ship comes to a sudden stop. It all combines for a compelling experience both visually and audibly.
The content that is already in game is quite a lot of fun and I can see a ton of possibility for future addition. Right now the game consists of three merchant factions. The Gold Hoarders, Merchants and Soul Collectors. Collecting treasure chests, running missions for animals/items or skulls respectively. It mostly boils down to fetch quests at the moment but its the adventures that happen in between that expand the game. When I have six chests on board after doing several Gold Hoarder missions and realizing I have a galleon chasing me, having to make a mad dash for an outpost while evading them and sprinting with my most valuable chest trying to beat out the enemy crew makes for a compelling experience.
Player vs Player is at the core of what this game can offer but it is also in some ways quite optional. You can chose to turn and engage the enemy but you can also out sail them. I spent the majority of my time in a sloop playing solo and I only once was overtaken and sunk by a larger ship mostly due to poor sailing on my part. The servers are limited to six ships at a time and the map is generally large enough to keep it fun but not crowded. The servers are dynamic so if any one server loses enough population you are automatically moved to another server seamlessly to maintain a good population so they don't end up with a hundred servers with one crew on each.
Proximity chat is hilarious and inappropriate at times! One of the most brilliant things in this game is directional/proximal audio. I sailed up to a galleon that was at an island I had to get too and said hello to which they promptly attacked and sunk my ship. However I managed to jump off and swim to the island and hide. Then listening to the crew I heard that they had managed to get stuck and couldn't figure out how to get their galleon away from the island again. I called out to them "Hey, Captain of the sloop you just sunk, can I come aboard? I can help you get the ship underway again" After some assurances I wouldn't shoot them, I came aboard and gave them a little quick lesson in handling the bigger ships. They thanked me and offered me a chest they had found as payment which I declined but was a nice gesture none the less. Its that kind of random encounters that can really make the game fascinating. Now granted you can easily get the profanity spewing kiddies as well, but you can easily mute them and ignore them.
I randomly joined with a number of crews and while a few of them just locked me in the brig I fell in with a number of folks who were a joy to sail with. Some of them taught me things about the game I did not already know, and a couple of them would only speak in pirate which was quite hilarious. I sailed with a father/son team for awhile which was quite a lot of fun. The one thing that needs to be added is the ability to make your crew private, I got stuck in the brig a few times because I was the 4th member while they were waiting for a friend to resolve connection issues.
The price point of 60 dollars is fairly standard but comes with promises from the developers that all future DLC/expansions are included which is a deal! Micro transactions will be included but not until 3 months after release and never loot boxes. They will only ever be cosmetic items with a method to earn them through in-game currency is thought to be possible as well. You have to use the Windows Store to purchase it which I know many folks will dislike but it comes with the added bonus of a seamless cross platform play with Xbox players! I probably had at least one Xbox player in every crew I was a part of and it was very easy to communicate with them. Also using the Xbox app I was able to add them to my friends list and even sailed multiple times with a few of them by inviting them onto my crew.
I’m a very good lurker. No sales pitch I posted it on my personal FB as well. I feel strongly about SoT as you can tell so finally decided to comment. Feel free to ignore if you think it’s biased but it’s genuine :-)
