It is not unreasonable to say that Stephen Spielberg is unparalleled in his craft. His work stands as a monument to everything great about film, building worlds where we can find a momentary escape from the drudgery of everyday existence. It seems fitting that a man that brought strangers from other worlds to our screens, brought giants of fact and fantasy to life, and took us on fantastic voyages should realize a tale that pays homage to all of these.

Having read the book many many times, I was greatly disappointed by the huge differences in the movie, serious plot changes and overall feel. I think as a movie it is a solid 7 out of 10, but compared to the book, it is only a 5 out of 10.

The book explored a probable future of education, work and entertainment when the prevalent social network would mix with virtual worlds. It is a mandatory lecture for engineers applying in VR companies. As the future is rarely intimate, Ernest Cline had the clever idea to mix it with the nostalgia of the 80s in the race. Unfortunately Spielberg was only interested in the 80s and a small portion of entertainment (noting on education or work). I would recommend to read the book instead, found the movie disappointing.

I tried to read the book, and after the initial chapters and beating the first obstacle the book seemed to forget the goal and delve into distractions. I didn't even get past the 'dance off' before I put it down.

Plus, I heard, when they were making it Spielberg wanted to take out all of his film references - I stopped following it then.

Realize that Spielberg is condensing the entire novel down into a 2 hour experience.  Themes might be cut, events might be combined, all in the interest of ensuring it fits a normal movie runtime.

I try not to carry book expectations into movie adaptations.  You set yourself up for disappointment that way.

I don't even know who this is talking about ,Spielberg yes but nothing else rings a bell here.To me Ray Harryhausen will be the legendary god of movie production, what he did during an era of black n white was simply astonishing and with very little technology compared to today.

    Movie first, then.

Loved the book, it's a must read for any life gamer born in the 70s/80s. and although the movie felt a little rushed trying to jam the whole story into 1 movie and the differences in the story. The movie is still amazing!!

Very hard to make a movie from a successful book.  Personally did not like the book, so maybe I will like the movie.
