They are actually at just over 3 years. The kickstarter ended in March of 2015.
MMOs take a long time to build. 3 to 5 years is the norm. They have collected a total of 20 million in funding, but 6 mil of that was added back in December, and only about 4.5 mil is from crowdfunding.

Todd Coleman is on record saying that funding is not an issue with completing the game:

First: we just completed a private equity raise of $6m in December. Our launch plan isn't affected by funding.
Read that full quote to understand how soft launch will differ from a traditional launch.
Their launch plan IS affected by wanting to get everything into the game before soft launch and have it be as good as it can be. They are making excellent progress. 5.5 was moved to the live server on March 23rd and they just had a livestream today giving us details of what to expect in 5.6, which should be hitting the test server within the next few weeks, if they keep to the same schedule they had for 5.5.
They have stated that their target for soft launch is end of the year. They may not hit that, but even if it goes into the 1st quarter of 2019, that's still only 4 years total of development.
But no, there is no release date yet. They aren't going to give a date and then listen to all the whining if they don't hit it. There will be a free beta just before soft launch. This isn't an open beta, but rather a free beta for everyone who has created an account on Crowfall.com by a certain date. They haven't said yet when the cutoff will be, but I imagine they will announce it at some point so that everyone has a chance to get in.
So, now that you are properly educated on the subject, maybe your opinion of the game will change.
Eh, probably not.
