it will be an open paid beta. basically you pay subscription prices to join. $14.99 a month I believe. anyone can join and they will use the funds to finish the game.
Even if the funds are used to finish the game, it is incredibly absurd to pay 15 dollars a month for a beta.
Would you'd rather it was full price B2P? Honestly, EA hurts mmorpgs more than helps them in my opinion. For the flashy, made to be watched MMOs that are popular, it is great. Any game with a little complexity that was made to be played and wasn't developed specifically to be watched and basically has no complexity and a flash just gets trashed non-stop, no one logs in, and it just spirals down.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but B2P EA sure isn't it. The old system of invites and NDAs is good for the people that get in, but it still doesn't fund the game. I won't buy any EAs anyone, but $15 to check the game out is something I'm willing to do. I also am not willing to put significant effort into any game pre-final character wipe.
So at least for me, I can pay the reasonable amount of $15 to check the game out for a little bit and then know if its something to look forward to or ignore.
I can definitely see how a single, high B2P price would be far more appealing to anyone who puts significant time and effort into a beta and plan on playing the beta for months and months.
It also comes down to supporting what you value. I'm assuming this game will have a decent character development system. And since that is so rare now that mmorpgs are being replaced by crafting games and Barbie doll games and games with absolutely no substance or complexity at all specifically and purposefully designed to be fun for little children to watch I am more than willing to do my part and put money into the games that value actual gameplay and heavy, non-lite rpg systems that aren't made for the biggest and broadest possible audience. Anyone who wants real games to be made again should also, in my opinion. Now saying that I kind of painted myself into a corner and should probably stay subbed through beta just to support development.
I don't agree. With all of the incredibly high-priced, shady tactics some developers are going with these days, $15 a month to try out the game in an advanced beta state doesn't seem that bad. Spend $15, play for a month, and if you don't like it, quit and never look back.
$15 for two months would also be a little better or maybe $9.99 with some unique monthly in-game gift of some kind.
Honestly that second picture kinda reminds me of Colorforms from when I was a kid lol
Well, their ingame world doesn't look much better.
I mean, the props (buildings and such) look okay, but the world itself (from the footages I've seen) looks more like an Architect prop than an actually living breathing game world.
It all looks way too clean, sterile and lifeless. No atmosphere (except from a skybox) at all!
They really need to get hold of a decent environment artist to improve the gameworld, get some post-fx, rays, lightning effects, buff out all those straight lines, etc etc etc in it. If you don't have an immersive gameworld to play in, you will be bored to tears within an hour. /sigh
Great! But also... DUH! Wouldn't be much of a CoH successor if it didn't have 'trollers and scrappers and defenders.
$15 per month... isn't that what I was paying for CoH when it was full up? So really it would be sort of a soft launch... with a wipe coming?
Every single Indie MMO now seems to be doing some sort of version of this. A soft launch, early access, open beta. But they don't do a wipe, hard to say if they will do one here, but remember wipes can wipe out stuff you buy. We have also been getting the announcement there will be no wipes way, way after that decision was made.
Welcome to the new world of MMO "launches"
