How to make WAR totally rule

Sorry if this's been brought up before, but anyways . . .

I hope Mythic can find some way for all WAR players to be on the same server.  Or at least a way for people across servers to interact (preferably on the battlefield).  Personally, I hate the idea of servers.  Ok take WOW, it has 5M+ subscribers.  Big deal, I only ever saw 20K people on my old server Kil'Jaeden.  Those other 4.99M ppl I dont care about cause I'll never see them anyway, as far as my gameplay experience is concerned I'm playing with 20K other people, thats it.

On the other hand, take EVE.  Everyone plays on one server, so if you know someone by reputation, or from the boards, or a friend of a friend etc., there is a chance no matter how small that you WILL run into them in-game one day.  So basically reputation MATTERS.  If you act like a douche and KS or ninja loot you cant server hop or realm transfer or whatever (well, you can reroll from scratch).  If you piss someone off, there might come a day months or even years down the road where they'll get you back with your pants down at the worst possible moment.  Thats just awesome IMO.  (Thats why I consider EVE to be the largest MMO, because you actually ARE playing with 100k other subs.)

Conversely, you can work hard and make a name for yourself (ganker, crafter, wutever) that would be recognizable throughout the game world.  In WOW server firsts were pointless and faction firsts even less so, because there were so many servers (100+ in NA alone is it?).  I was in a high-end raid guild that IMO was very active, we attacked alliance towns, coordinated w/ allied guilds to lock the alli out of instances, etc etc but at the end of the day it was just pissing in the ocean.

I know EVE is a special case cause the game is built in such a way that naturally scatters the population (if ever EVE's 20K+ concurrent pilots flew to one system to duke it out Im pretty sure the game'd crash) but there should be a way to pull of inter-server interaction w/out compromising the client.  One idea I had was similar to DAOC's (never played it, correct me if Im wrong) setup where several servers share a contested area.  IIRC Auto Assault has something similar too, a PVP area accessible to all servers.  So maybe in WAR there can be like 10 unique battlegrounds where anyone can go.  Aside from wahtever server-specific conflict is available.  Guilds can take over castles and outposts and stuff.  Maybe cap the BG at 4K players to preserve game integrity?  (I hate this idea but cant think of anything else)  If your guild owns a castle  you get 'instant access', I think this would be fair, 200 spots reserved out of 4k, for a guild that takes the time and effort to get organized, seize a catle and defend it against all comers.  And if they dont use their instant access then someone else takes it over.  Why would players want to fight on these BGs instead of their own local ones?  Well, power and prestige for starters.  Something no MMOer can resist =p  Additionally, maybe these unique BGs could affect the storyline depending on who rolls who (I can dream).  Anyway, what do you guys think?

I don''t really know when Humankind will die out but i''m guessing about 6 years before WOW.

  • well for everybody to play on 1 server there would be 2 big problems. 1: the WAR gameworld would be totaly overcrowded 2. the hardware to handle so many players on 1 server doesnt exist yet (?)

it works in EVE cuz spacesimulations in generell are far more hardwarefriendly ( i guess becuz the lack of objects in space ;) ) and the gameworld is huge.

OP has a good point imo. "One" server would rock. Of course they would have to make a HUGE game world for that.

EVE has lots of (physical) servers but they all work as a one virtual server, they are just connected to each other. So technology to do what OP suggested does very much exist.

Well, umm... maybe you should have a look at Dark and Light, they're trying to do what you want.. 100k people for one server. The game totaly sucks IMO, but that doesn't necessarily have to do with their concept but with their bad combat system, graphics etc.

The problem with a huge world is, that 90% of it would probably end up beeing plain and boring. There's just no way that they could fill such a world with meaningfull content. Some randome mob spawns here and there, that would probably be it. Not very desireable I think. Another solution would be to have instanced zones like EQ2, but you might as well split them up into servers then.

DAoC only introduced Server Clusters (sharing of the frontier zone) when the servers' population dropped to a point where PvP suffered. If they had done that when the servers were at their peak there would have been sooo much whining about zergs it would have been unreal.

PS: If you're playing games to have the (questionable) brag rights to be first in something, or be 'famous' you might be playing for the wrong reasons.

daoc has that tech it is called clustering and i have some of my opinions on it

i was on a server with 400 peps and it had realy bad pvp but then i remember they clustered with 2 other low pop. servers so now we had 100 but it was only the pvp areas and that rocked cause now we could actualy afford to just charge them and notalways need to make a ambush to win (i played mids they were like 75 peps and all the rest were enemys) although now they clustered it with another high population server and i thought it would only get better but now there are mob respawn campers everywhere and pvp is impossible cause now only guilds go out and if your not in a good one then u ar alone and since they go out more they are better so they usely ask you to duel one of them and then u get masacred so i think difrent servers is best as long as its not that high of a pop. and if they do have to cluster it should be capital city only.

ayeaye i played DAoC aswell, when they clustered i got owned cos of all the guilds runnin around n all the QQ'in so i left it.

Ye i do love the warhammer genre but to have every1 on 1 server is just unrealistic, it wont happen. The graphics are indeed nice imagine seeing all that with i dunno 20k+ ppl in 1 zone?! your pc would fry my friends. would be good but more than 1 server is always needed for games like this.

    Currently playing : Darkfall
    Character name : Aeola Anara
Played: Almost every P2P MMO you can get your hands on, notably:
Daoc, SWG, LOTRO, WAR, AoC + Dozens more
