Nice, I like the third screenshot.

"Time.." I chuckled "I hold no secret to time, though it's mystery puzzles me. Deny it's existence and lie to myself not with hopes of a quickened pace."

The visuals are getting better as new material pours in. This game is going to rock.

Nice, really like the look of the Marsh of Madness.

  • phosphorosphosphoros Member Posts: 512

I agree, as they refine the look and show more of what they're doing it looks better and better.

One of the issues with this "WoW Clone" nonsense is the approach Mythic took to design.
They decided to bypass the bumpmapping (that makes many games look plasticy) and go for low-medium polygon models with high-res textures.
This approach allows more machines to run the game. Low to high-end. As WoW did and it was a good choice.
With WoW though they took it one step further and modelled the world around what was already established in the Warcraft series. Hence the cartoony look. But I admit the game runs great.
Scroll down to post #7. Also, a dev responded as well.

Anyhow, I really like how this game is shaping up visually.
I really wish they'd show the other races.
I wanna see Chaos and Dark Elves!

There is also another good reason, look at the minatures and how they're painted - they fit this look down to the ground so it makes the world look warhammer while reducing the technical hurdles.

This was a good business choice if you ask me and if the only critism that can be levlied is that it looks like the leading MMO then thats a real shame

"Essentially, they did not want to slam the door on a large audience and
they felt that a dark and stereotypical Warhammer world would be
depressing, dreary and dark." From mmorpg.com's preview. This is what make people compare it to Wow. It's not the lack of bumb mapping. It's the art direction. Instead of going in the dark, gritty and mature direction (Wich Warhammer is for me) they take the lighthearted, joyfull and cartoony approach. Wow is cartoony, WAR will be cartoony. That is why people compare them, not because of the lack of advanced effects. They are taking the art direction towards to money and not towards the lore Wich I find abit sad. But atleast the gameplay promises look promising

From the previews, I gathered that Warhammer is going to be dark and gritty, not to mention the concept art.  Everything the Orcs make has either a severed dwarf head or a dead dwarf tied to it.  Not to mention that in some of the previes they mentioned crows pecking at dead dwarf bodies on the ground.

That doesn't sound very light hearted and joyful to me.  Although it's part of the "humour" being put in the game, because the orcs think it's funny to tie up a dwarf to their towers until he dies.

    @ EliasThorne & Phoenixs

I was only refering to the the decisions on a technical level about the engine and it's use of specific design decisions.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I honestly didn't want to repeat myself for the 100th time on the exact issue you pointed out.
Personally I've been trying to defend WAR's look (even to my braindead friends) since the first screenshots came out and I've finally given up.

  • phosphorosphosphoros Member Posts: 512

As I understand and from the screenshots so far. It does indeed look darker and grittier than WoW for sure.

But they are going for a teen rating and that means excessive blood and mayhem will be trimmed down if not removed.

Without getting into a debate on video game violence and the Teen rating. I really do wish they'd make something a bit more mature. I realise the business decision behind it and I totally understand that. I guess I just wish business would lend itself to older gamers. We're not all teens that must be catered too.
I've been playing games since I was a wee brat. MMOs since they came out. I've yet to play one even remotely mature with content and marketing.

I know, I know. Teens are the ones spending the money. Business sense and all that. Doesn't mean I can't wish does it?

It can be argued, as well, that the look of WAR has been more prominent throughout GW history than the darker John Blanche-style work.  Especially the miniatures; anyone remember the 'red phase'?

While I love the darker style, WAR's look is equally as Warhammer.  Take a look at most miniatures, 3rd edition to present, or Dave Gallagher, Geoff Taylor, or even Mark Gibbons' old black-and-whites.   WAR is a near-exact facsimile of this style (which, of course, is also the style Blizzard mimicked for the Warcraft series), even darker in many cases.

Whether or not you prefer it, this is one of many GW styles and quite accurate to Warhammer's history.

It really does look cartoony or what not like WoW, but the PvP aspect of the game might tap over SBs system, although SB had more depth as into building your guilds city and everywhere is open pvp, but this game looks very promising and might make the SB players extremely happy and fit perfectly for their needs. If i was working for Wolf the company behind SB i would look for a job here, as they have experience in this area of gaming "PvP", and could only contribute to the ideas and thoughts of this game. And as for the players well this game might fix your needs if you love PvP, im expecting DAoC population drop severely with this new title and include 70-80% of SBs players come to this game.

As i am waiting for Vanguard, i might just pick this title up next year.

WoW already is owned.  Just because they have millions of subscribers doesn't mean they aren't owned daily.  lol

Just like McDonalds gets owned daily by much better restaurants.

I always appreciated the dark side of Warhammer, though from reading White Dwarf and through playing the game, I always found it to have a sense of humour also, this I believe is why the game has taken on the graphic style that it has, along with he fact that it can be played on lower-spec machines therefore shipping more copies.

I personally enjoyed WoW and it's graphical style, and I knwo as soon as my degree finishes in June, I'll be back on, and  this time, fully intend to go all the way. lol

Its sad that it isnt Dark and DreeryBut aslong as the gameplay is good everything is ok

Besides we can always hope for 40k.

  • HeikenHeiken Member Posts: 3
Well thanks to "Mythic" they are doing their jobs good. That we can undestand from screenshots and DEV interviews. I prefer W40k mmo, but Warhammer also has a nice world, thats ok i think. Game will be "end game PvP" oriented, im happy to hear that. And they are putting some cool features like "Territory Claim", "Town Watches", etc... Impatiently waiting at the moment.

Actually, Warcraft obtained it's style and look based on the Warhammer series. So technically, WoW is a "Warhammer" clone

The graphic style may be "cartoony" but it fits the figures and it's still grittier then wow and we havent really seen anything in action just static poses so u dont know if the fighting might be bloody and gory (or at least look like it is) so we shouldnt really judge and graphics arent everything.

There is to many games like this already... I'm afraid that future isnt bright for WAR.

Would be much better choice if they go 40k from the market stand point.

  • DuskfallDuskfall Member Posts: 18
Well I am quite sure that many will get copy of WAR to them self when the time comes. There is a lot of old and not so old Warhammer tabletop gamers and I think that most of them will get WAR too. You cant even imagine how popular Warhammer tabletop games has had been - and still are. As many has said, World of Warcraft is kinda copy of Warhammer. I think that all the games and stuffs of warcraft series are, sure there is something what Da Blizzard has created them self, but obiviously most of it has come from Warhammer. Im not gonna bring up Blizzard for stealing ideas, I just think that they should had stick in Diablo and make Diablo 3 or World of Diablo. Anyway Im gonna buy piece of copy to my self when they release WAR, and will play it like maniac. Cant wait.. Im freaking out..

Really I could care less when people say "WTFOMG it's a WOW clone". If you judge a game by it's graphics rather then it's gameplay you won't be playing any fun game anytime soon because to many "pretty games" have awful gameplay mechanics. The only thing I want to know is how the game will play and how RvR/GvG will shape up. That IMHO is the most important aspect of any MMORPG.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)
