Fortnite News - Epic is going to take Fortnite into battle royale esports in a great big way and has committed $100,000,000 in tournament prize pools for the 2018-2019 year of competitive play. "We're getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different", the blog reads, "- we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game."

I guess when you're making crazy amounts of money, you can commit crazy amounts of money to tournament prizes for eSports. There's just no stopping Epic these days. It's like it's the WoW of this generation -- not the only one, not even terribly unique by comparison to others, but it's the one hitting it out of the park.

I'm wondering if this money is doled out to winners of matches. Or if it's like what Warren Buffett does every year with the NCAA basketball tournament, where he offers to give you a zillion dollars for a perfect bracket?

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Plus having prize pools this large will guarantee more players stick with the game (at least players hoping to compete).

Epic was in the right place at the right time. The console release prior to PUBG really helped as well.

I got an instant ice cream kind of headache when I first read this headline, I have esports anxiety - that's a thing right? Imagining the amount of disappointed people who miss out on that prize pool as games collapse trying to feed this trend because they simply can't afford it creating even more disappointment that then leads to worse outcomes....*breathes into brown paper bag*

    Crazzzzzzy amount!

An e-sport tournament game where bunny hopping is a tactic, don't they realise how ridiculous that will make e-sports look?

Being that it's officially released on their site (link is in the full article) and they are literally raking in the $$$$, why is it *rolls eyes at the term* "fake news"?

There are estimates that they made 129 million in revenue in February alone off of fortnite. That's one month. Since then, from what I see, a lot more players are spending a lot more money on skins and Battle Passes. They can't throw around numbers like that and post them publicly on their official website and have it be fake. People will call it out when the tournaments happen if that is the case. It's definitely not fake news.

Why are you all over the pool prize? Is not like they will support the full amount. I am pretty sure that a crazy amount of money from the $100 mil , will come from sponsors, stream rights , etc.

And you make it sounds like this is somehow bad. Why is 100 mil in prizes over a year a bad thing? eSports will soon be a very big thing. Get used with.

Shroud doesn't even play Fortnite all that much, hes always on PUBG.

I would like to see Summit play against Ninja though. He will punch another monitor when he loses.

This sounds insane, but there is another angle to look at it from... The $100 million is probably not going all in just one tournament. It will likely cover several tournaments throughout a number of years, but like all good marketeers out there they have to put some really big numbers to attract even more attention from the start.

    My theory.

Hmm i wonder how e-sport will work for them since i've heard many arguments for and against it because of it's random nature and since their the first of the genre to try it, that will mark a precedent to the whole gaming industry for better or worse.

And a bit off topic, i'm really curious to see how fornite and pubg will be affected by the new AAA battle royal games that will be coming soon from COD and posible Battlefield.

Honestly, I think that COD and BFV will be too late to the race for dominance.

And Fortnite isn't AAA? I beg to differ. I think it's done amazingly well -- as well or better than a lot of "AAA" studio games that have come out in recent years. :)

Yes Fornite could be consider AAA however pubg is not and thats one of the reasons why fornite manage to dethrone pubg (Of course there are other factors but this one was an important one) from the top battle royal genre while pubg and fornite got significant difference with one another, i always felt that pubg lacked a quite amount of polish and stablity in that regard and while im not saying fornite is perfect or anything it can indeed feel quality of an AAA game.

And while there are several others battle royal games right now and more coming soon, fornite and pubg had settle the dominance quite well and haven't face more serious competition which might change soon considering how the other AAA publishers have notice how profitable this recent trend is, at least for now of course (which im not sure if it will end soon not this year at least).

hope EPIC doesn't put all $$$ in the price pot; the original Fortnite (Save the World) needs a lot of love. Example: finally the scheduled rerolling of Weapon Perks will get patched in on May 22, only pushed back from last November.

Don't think I will push my nephew to be a football (with the round ball) player, E-sporter will make much better money and he doesn't run the risk to be kicked in half.

It is sad with all the words and phrases we have in the English language that people insist on misusing a select few. He got close, in archaic English, we'd accuse this of being a "publicity stunt".

On the topic, I bet this will fail. EPIC has been really lucky with this, much more than Blizzard was with WoW. I don't think they be able to keep the ball rolling. Battle Royal games are much easier to make, I expect some stiff competition soon from some of the big players.

If they could only bring back Paragon, keep it free to play as it was, put the game in semi-maintenance mode and "try" to bring some players in...

    I miss Paragon.
