Barrage of Privacy Update emails. What does it mean?

mgilbrtsnmgilbrtsn Member EpicPosts: 3,430
I've recently gotten a flurry of privacy update emails from just about everybody.  I'm assuming this has to do with the new European privacy rules coming into force tomorrow.  (I haven't read through all of these notices).  What does it mean for the gaming world?  Is it good or bad?

Yea isnt it crazy how many companies you've never heard of have your data and are now begging you to let them keep it.

As for gaming, only one i think ive received was from Elite Dangerous (and maybe thats only because ive not played it for probably a year or 2 now).

It means you have not yet set up a separate e-mail to use when registering or ordering things from companies that want to spam you.

I've gotten a lot recently also.  Some from games some from other places. Mostly they want to continue sharing your information I think.

Well , I find it pretty good actually. Not only the Law itself , but the way websites are now forbidden to use your personal data/email, unless you agree ( again ).

That means those who just registered in the past on different websites and don't want to use them anymore and were lazy to unsubscribe or the process was ...annoying, well .. now the problem is solved :) Less spam is always good.

I would love to see a Law, where ALL websites needs to ask for your permission on an yearly basis to keep using your email and your personal data.

We've been discussing it on several threads, one I started last week and in a news story posted today.

That would be too burdensome on the company honestly.

It really doesn't have to do with sharing information. I don't know why people think that. Most companies aren't sharing your information with anyone. They're just using it for their own internal business needs. But the GDPR still requires them to do a lot of stuff anyway, which is why so many emails are going out. It's not like there's a ton of bad companies out there - it's just that every company who does business with people in the EU has to comply with this law, so they are. That's it. Nothing nefarious - quite the opposite.

It seems that I get these "updates" every spring. I totally forgot about the "European thing" recently...

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
