A Pre UO:R Server.....................

HocheteHochete Member CommonPosts: 1,210

As there was just another UO related thread, it got me thinking once again about how uber an OFFICIAL pre UO:R (T2A) server could be.

i remember petitioning for this a while ago, but it came to nothing and I soon found a free shard that offered a fairly similar pre UO:R experience. however....... it just wasn't the same, it was good! don't get me wrong, but it wasn't PRE:UOR as it should be.

so my question is, how many would like to see a real, T2A oldsk00l OFFICIAL (EA run) shard for oldskool players to enjoy? Before you all write it off and say EA would never do such a thing, they have actually mentioned 'considering' it if enough players showed an interest.

would it be a good idea? or would EA screw it up as they do everything that was once good? How about a poll ;)

I do understand that EA has brought it up quite a few times.  Just recently they said it was in the proccess of talking about.  But from what I've heard, they've totally dropped that topic.  And since then, the population of UO has gone down a bit more.

But. . .Darkscribe (the developer) did say something on the UO.com page about some big things coming for UO in the future.  They said that they will be announcing it in the next couple of month.  I don't know what it could be. . .I hope not another expansion.  I'm hopeing something along the lines of Updated graphics or maybe even a pre-ren server.

    We'll see i guess.

They need to stop redeveloping UO and make a new one completely. A whole new engine and everything. I would definately give it a shot.

UO is too dead for me to try again...much less give money to EA again.

    Herein lies the problem:

What exactly would the difference between an 'official' UO server of this type and the current 'unofficial' ones?

The server I play on has over 4,000 users ;)  Over 1k on at peak, sometimes 2k...  I can't see how an 'official' alternate server could attract me unless they released some seriously upgraded graphics or something... I honestly don't know... Not for $12.95 (or whatever they're charging now) per month.

Indeed freeshards are pretty cool, however they do have an air of instability about them. IPY (In Por Ylem i beleive) was an enourmous freeshard, with a few thousand players. It now doesn't even exist! People on freeshards are very liable to leaving for another freeshard, afterall there are loads to choose from! If one big guild goes, others are sure to follow, and so even the hugest player run shards can crumble in an instant.

An official shard wouldn't suddenly just cease to exist entirely, especially as long as EA stayed true to the old UO T2A ruleset, and didn't patch or screw around with the game in any way. There simply would be no reason for people to leave! And even if they did and the servers population dropped to say.. 1000, the shard would still probably run, purely because a huge gaming giant such as EA is behind it, not a smaller player run community that relies souly on donations to keep going.

I honestly think, with a.... say 14 day trial, a T2A official UO shard would attract tens of thousands of old UO fans back to the game, at least to try it out.

I don't feel an official shard would suffer the same fate, as long as EA DIDN'T patch the game or screw around with any T2A rules/graphics etc, people would have no reason to leave on mass exodus! The very fact that the shard is an 'official' T2A server would on its own attract a huge number of players at the beginning, many from freeshards.

    I dunno

What's to stop EA from just cancelling the game?  It's not like they're shy about doing it.

Like I said, I'd give it some thought... but I think EA missed the boat on a "Classic" server option long long ago.  It may be too late as players have found alternatives that cost them nothing and, additionally, aren't run by EA (which is a plus in and of itself).

Sorry Elnator, just edited the post a bit, second paragraph is a bit different now.

Your right tho, free is awesome. But 5 quid a month or whatever isn't so much to ask, I spent FAR more on donations when i played DFI UO (players were given rewards for donating, which were nice..).

Like I said in my edited post, EA are a gaming giant, unless the game entirely flopped and only like 200 people bothered playing, I highly doubt they'd cancel the server. Afterall, they have god knows how many servers already running, how much money can 1 more cost?

BTW, what freeshard is it you play? I'd be interested to check it out :D

Your not allowed to advertise free UO shards on these forums.

While i love free shards ( well used to ), they in general have one major problem:

    -> Staying online.

When a company makes money from a mmorpg, the servers will stay online for years, but in the past, i had the bad luck of servers who died or hybernated for months, back, hybernate, back etc.

Thats one of the problems of free shards, there is no fixed income, holding those shards online is a bitch. There arent as permanent as the official servers. And the server software in the past used to hold only a few 100 of people at the time. This has changed with RunUo, and the increase of PC cpu capabilities over the years ( lowering the cost & increasing the available power ).

Ps: some may know this, other may not. There has been a 3d client for UO in development for some years.

    Ultima Iris 3d client.
    ultimairis.sourceforge.net

There now seems to be a fork in the project, one of the main developers seems to have forked to project & is now using Ogre3D or something engine, instait of there own engine.

Some older screenshots ( don't look very good )
    http://games.mymyah.com/RPG/UltimaIris/

But, like i said before, years in development. It works very well, but the development is so darn slow, and they don't communicated enouf.

It is too late now.  The 3rd generation of MMO's are about to come out and with them even better pvp.  I did play on pre t2a free servers for some time, though.

I will remain VERY dubious about future MMO's that promise to have good pvp. I can't see any game, ever, topping UO's oldskool pvp.
