Crowfall News - If you're in a hurry and don't always have the time to conduct proper harvesting, Crowfall has you covered. Wildcrafting is a way to gather plants that can literally be done on the run. "You see a spawned resource and you can run up and grab it with a single button press", the blog reads. This is considered a second-to-second loop as compare to, for instance, combat that is a minute-to-minute loop.

I also hope they'll make fields of these (or, say, woods covered with mushrooms - too much for just one person to harvest and carry), it might "help" with having more PvP hotspots.and spreading population even more across the map.
I don’t know about that...
I think crafting is going to be hugely important to the war efforts. Real crafting shouldn’t be pigeonholed into PvE. Without “quests” to artificially give out armor and weapons to players, crafters are going to be the lifeblood of a successful campaign.

This^^^^. Even if you wanted to roll as a serious crafter all you do is create your accout, login, select skills to train, come back in a few months when you can actually do something, all without ever actually touching the game. You can't increase skills by actually playing, so there is no point. Game is litterally boring af if you wanna craft with no point in even playing for what will propably be a month or months. Also, if anyone wanted to roll solo craft/gather, don't bother, all the required gathers for anything are locked behind group harvesting, and no...no one will be selling that stuff.
~I am Many~
Crafting skill comes from a variety of sources. It comes from skill training, which yes, is earned passively over time. It also comes from gear and it comes from increasing your attributes via obtaining better vessels and actively leveling those vessels. In the future, there will also be crafting disciplines which you will want to obtain, and there will be thralls which you'll want to put into crafting stations to provide crafting buffs and into weapons to give them special abilities. You'll want to make deals with other players to harvest the stuff you need, or to make the subcomponents you aren't trained for. You'll need to manage your factories so you can produce items in a more efficient manner. There will be plenty of active things you can do to improve as a crafter. If you think you are just going to sit on the sidelines for 3 months and then suddenly be a good crafter, good luck.
You don't need to wait months to be able to craft. It will take months to be good at it, but even poorly made gear will be valuable since crafting is the only source of gear in the game. While you're not playing and waiting for your skill to max out, all the real crafters will be making gear, building a reputation for themselves, and contributing to their side winning the campaign.
On harvesting, no, it's not all locked behind group harvesting. The only things that require more than 1 person are the ore and stone motherlodes, and they only require 2 people. The motherlodes drop gems and minerals, which are only used in making jewelry and vessels. You can gather 100% solo for blacksmithing, woodworking, leatherworking, runemaking and stonemasonry. Alchemists use minerals, but only for the stuff used to make vessels.
If you want to be a solo crafter/harvester, you can, but you need to accept the risks that come with doing that. Crowfall is a PvP game that pits factions/guilds against each other and requires as much cooperation as conflict.

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
