Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Bethesda Game Studios is the entity developing Fallout 76 and, as mentioned, they are just one of the many developer studios that work under Bethesda Softworks.
It's most likely nothing. It just struck me as strange

It's 1 game. How many single player games do all of you have in your backlog? I literally have about 1000 and I'm a very hardcore gamer.
I have enough games I 'want' to play already that I won't be able to complete before I die.
This is the week before E3 and many games will be announced. Bethesda has a myriad of studios and many of them are announcing single player games. I just hope their presentation goes better than last year's YouTube video one

If you are set to multiplayer when you enter a zone it's inhabited by all the other players in that area with multiplayer enabled, if you set it to party it's only members of your party, and solo it's just you.
I have switched over to party mode on a few occasions to farm particular areas so I don't have to share the NPC or resource spawns with other players. It's kinda nifty. Not saying this system is amazing and that I want other games to adopt it, but it isn't too bad either.
Kind of cool to be able to decide if you want to play the game as an MMO or if you just want an area to yourself. But if flies in the face of all the mechanics I usually desire an MMO to make the focus. That focus being a sandbox based on player conflict and interaction.
I don't really see the point in not doing it when the primary focus of your game is PvE content. Not sure what it really takes away from a game like WoW, LotRO, SWTOR or ESO if you can say "I want this area exclusive to me and my buddies for a bit". Those games could just as easily exist as Diablo like dungeon crawlers with the exception of zones like the Ettenmoors and Cyrodiil for all that other players matter. And I can certainly see the upside. Imagine if every time content gets crowded you can just make your own instance and farm it solo or with your friends.
