Bethesda. What?

6 months ago (Dec 2017) Bethesda released a video with Linda Carter called "Save Player 1." It was a cute, minute and a half video about the wave of multiplayer games flooding the market lately.

A week or so ago, Bethesda captured Twitch (a steady 30,000 viewers were tuned in to a "Please Stand By" picture for hours) with the announcement of "Fallout 76." It's a "multiplayer game."

So, is Bethesda forgetting the "single player?" Or is this an anomaly? Time will tell, right?

[edit] Bad Fallout 76 link.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until I know more about the game.  I've always liked their single player focus, but at the same time, I don't think they have to be permanently locked in to single player only games for all future titles forever.

Bethesda Softworks made the video, which includes a multitude of studios and franchises (the latest Wolfenstein was published by Bethesda Softworks, for example).

Bethesda Game Studios is the entity developing Fallout 76 and, as mentioned, they are just one of the many developer studios that work under Bethesda Softworks.

I realize this. It just seemed weird that the first game announced after their small campaign is a multiplayer one.

It's most likely nothing. It just struck me as strange :)

A few of us have talked about the way single player was going out of fashion. Rather than go into all the reasons, at the time I can remember posters were in denial mostly going on about single player indie games. I said something like " and yes you are always going to get some solo AAA like Bethesda...maybe not.

Games as a service (GAAS) have a very strong appeal, (to devs) single player games are harder to fit into this model.

I won't buy a game if there's no single player aspect. No campaign, no buy.

While I mostly enjoy proper MMOs and single player games.. there's clearly a market for both. I would never presume that a studio is going to ignore one demographic over another nor do I think they should.

It's 1 game. How many single player games do all of you have in your backlog? I literally have about 1000 and I'm a very hardcore gamer.

I have enough games I 'want' to play already that I won't be able to complete before I die.

Then you are lucky, I don't and I see a shift away from solo to online only. Cash shops became more important than subscription and now Games as a Service have developed cash shops into something which will promotes online multiplier only design.

I'm not "poo-pooing" Bethesda, don't get me wrong. It just struck as strange that after their small "Save the Single Player" campaign, their next announced game is multiplayer :)

This is the week before E3 and many games will be announced. Bethesda has a myriad of studios and many of them are announcing single player games. I just hope their presentation goes better than last year's YouTube video one :)

They lie. They are just as much into this games as a service thing as everyone else.

The only major player that's followed through on their commitment to single player is Ubisoft. They also do multiplayer games obviously with all of the Tom Clancy stuff, but they still make solid single player titles, for now.
I just wish uPLay would go away. I'd love to play Assassin's Creed: Origins and the Odyssey one coming up. But I'm not loading yet another game launcher just to play some games. EA's Origin is in the same boat that I avoid getting into :)

It's only been six months since the video was released.  I'm not sure what folks were expecting by now, honestly.  The worst you could bitch about is no announcement of a specific singleplayer title.

I thought about that, seeing some trailers for it. Is it multiplayer, too?

Shroud of the Avatar actually has this going on. In SOTA there is an "Offline Mode" (I've never felt the urge to click it so I can say more about that beyond that it exists) There is also a multiplayer tab under settings. It can be switched to Solo, Party, or Multiplayer.

If you are set to multiplayer when you enter a zone it's inhabited by all the other players in that area with multiplayer enabled, if you set it to party it's only members of your party, and solo it's just you.

I have switched over to party mode on a few occasions to farm particular areas so I don't have to share the NPC or resource spawns with other players. It's kinda nifty. Not saying this system is amazing and that I want other games to adopt it, but it isn't too bad either.

Kind of cool to be able to decide if you want to play the game as an MMO or if you just want an area to yourself. But if flies in the face of all the mechanics I usually desire an MMO to make the focus. That focus being a sandbox based on player conflict and interaction.

I don't really see the point in not doing it when the primary focus of your game is PvE content. Not sure what it really takes away from a game like WoW, LotRO, SWTOR or ESO if you can say "I want this area exclusive to me and my buddies for a bit". Those games could just as easily exist as Diablo like dungeon crawlers with the exception of zones like the Ettenmoors and Cyrodiil for all that other players matter. And I can certainly see the upside. Imagine if every time content gets crowded you can just make your own instance and farm it solo or with your friends.
