World of Warcraft News - The World of Warcraft community site has been updated with a brief notice to let players know that 32-bit support for WoW will be ending this summer. "The vast majority of World of Warcraft players are already running the 64-bit version of the game, and this change will allow us to focus on making the 64-bit version as stable and efficient as possible". Players will need to upgrade their operating system to 64-bit, most often for free.

It appears that the days of WoW running on toasters is drawing to a close. Can WoW on smartphones/tablets be far behind? :)

I think this is a good thing. PC is supposed to be the expensive superior gaming hardware, yet it is heavily held back within its own ecosystem by 32-bit Walmart toasters that need to be able to run the same games at a much lower price.

Every game should focus all their resources on 64-bit games until its next evolution comes.

well, probably never but that would be great. WoW has an addon that changes the entire UI to a gamepad friendly UI like FFXIV with several modifiers for all buttons like FFXIV did. Couple that with WoW's action camera (a macro) and you have yourself a version of WoW that can fully feel like a XBO/PS4 game.

I would actually jump boat if that ever happened. In a heartbeat. But I'm also OK that it's PC only. There about 5 PC exclusive games i like so i need more exclusives as a reasons to keep mine.

Not unreasonable, 64-bit chips have been mainstream for about a decade.

It is nice to see an older game dropping the 32-bit version.  I wonder what Blizzard might have in store for a larger memory address space?  Something good, I hope.

Hope this helps with some of the FPS issues that even modern computers have on wow, it may not but who knows. I have friends with really good gaming pc’s that run like crap in a few zones.

Now if they would only switch LOTRO over to 64-bit as well...

They shouldn't require 64-bit just for the sake of requiring 64-bit, so I wouldn't complain about some games still supporting a 32-bit version.  But by now, it's completely fine to require 64-bit if you have some good reason for it, such as wanting to be able to use more than 2 GB of memory.

It won't make a difference in itself.  It just saves Blizzard a little in support costs of needing to support something that hardly anyone uses.

I was always shocked when my rigs couldn't run WoW efficiently on max settings.

It is simply a cost cutting idea, does nothing for the player base but they just had to throw in that political type speech about how this will allow them to focus more on the 64 bit versions ..lmao...yeah oh.

Issues with ANY game are usually most likely poor optimization or little to no optimization and little to no testing,in other words poor effort. Then of course there are those rare occasions you expect issues, like if 500 players decided to congregate in one small area.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Doesn’t it make it so more optimization is possible for 64bit, that they couldn’t do on x86, if they choose too?

Yeah its 2018, 64 bit should be the base requirement to play mmos.

Being able to use more RAM isn't really an optimization.  It may allow them to do some additional effects that were difficult to fit inside of 2 GB, so that could allow the game to look nicer.  That's probably the driving reason behind going 64-bit only.  But that won't improve your frame rates.

There are cases where algorithms have trade-offs between between computational time and storage space.  The only place that I can think of where games might want to do extra computational work to save space in memory is by clearing distant things out of memory quicker so that you'd have to reload them from disk if you backtrack.  But that shouldn't meaningfully affect frame rates--and if you are hoping for a frame rate boost out of that, the right way to do it is to reduce your draw distances.

Dropping 32 bit is fine. Blizz should also let players with older computers know that the requirements to play the new expansion have changed as well. I have 64 bit computer that has played all the previous WoW ex-pacs ,but according to the website "can you run it" my present computer doesn't meet the minimum specs required to play the new ex-pac. I'm not complaining mind you, just giving players with an older computer a heads up.

I really feel sorry for anyone that is still running a 32-bit system. I mean 64-bit tech has already been out of almost 15 years. So if you are still running a 32 then for god's sake upgrade already you caveman.

They're doing this because 32bit warden has limited access compared to 64bit.

They do update their system requirements with each expansion . You will need to select which expansion on the   Can you run it   website.
