Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
The area around Chernobyl is still more or less deserted, and will remain so for some time. If you want to see it for yourself, open up Google Earth and look around the area. Although you can't see the plant itself due to low resolution, you can see parts of Prypyat to the west.
I used to live very close to TMI (Three Mile Island) in Pennsylvania, and this really makes me think of what could have happened. Nuclear power has a lot of promise, but god forbid anything goes wrong.

I think its fair to say Nuclear power has come a long way, (but not in some people's ability to pronounce it).
Its certainly a power source we are going to be forced to use more and more of in the future. We cant continue to rely on fossil fuels like coal, gas and oil. Solar, wind etc are still way off being useable in terms of their ability to be anything more than a supplement for our energy needs.
Australia has over 3/4 of the worlds known urnaium deposits, yet we have NO nuclear power reactors and only one minor research reactor that produces isotopes for medical and other research.
I think one of the most ironic things of the last 25 years is that the same poeple who marched in the streets in the 70s holding "no nuclear" banners, now have to admit that if we are to arrest greenhouse gas emisions (if you believe in that stuff) that we need to get much better at making safe nuclear power and FAST!
It also makes you wonder if this excellent looking game will EVER be released.

AND this is farkin fascinating and gives you hope that once we are gone this poor planet my have a chance at rehabilitation, no matter how badly we have screwed it up.

so the age of oil is disappearing, and so dawns the age of nuclear power, happy new age.
btw, nuclear energy/power will be the source of destruction of all technology, nuclear wars will occure over domination of it, and it will lead to it's disappearance, and then people will be forced to go back fighting with swords and sticks, and the countdown begins :}

Why the rush to see the world end ?
Like I said.... life just isnt that interesting mate..
You like me, will liv out our boring little lives and die on a nice soft bed with friends and family around, kids will go on and do the same... The TV will get worse, the choices of fast food will get better... Beyond that nothing much of any note will happen...

ya but i think nuclear power is safer for the environment if handled with the same care oil is.
because we wouldnt need oil tankers......
which are a huge environmental risk.

Our future engery sources have to be wind, water and the "neutral" energies. Like petrol based on alcohol from trees or wheat. They work better than you might think. The only thing we lack in this department is the will to build them, and develop them.
Verg I was refering to the predictions of Allah zapping us all for invading Iraq.... not the planet melting down from a global 3 mile island...
Im 100% in favour of nuclear power... its the only practical solution we have at this time.

A lot of people and companies would be out of a job or investment if we switched from fossil fuels. These same people who are heavily invested in fossil fuels put forth their own self serving propaganda to deter a change.
Sadly too many of them care more for their pocket book than they do for the good of the planet.
Seems to me it is about time they begin to transition and get it in their minds that the oil barrel is getting low and needs to go. The rest of us would be wise to question their words.
Well this is the topic of the arch story line in our game conflict omega...
Our game is a post apoch game, the catastraphe is not nuclear war or anything like that -- its the eventual crumble of society - the lose of natural resources, fossil fuels and emissions screwing up our atmospher causing bad conditions world wide...
Corporate take overs and governements giving up their powers more and more to greedy corparate factions -- the lack of resources and the eventual fall of society

Aside from waste and safety concerns; nuclear energy isn't renewable. Once the uranium has served its purpose, that's it. There's enough of the stuff though. [url=http://www.wise-uranium.org/umaps.html]
Edit: plus to say its dangerous to mine is an understatement.
No annoying animated GIF here!
Nuclear technology is not the way forward.
Although nuclear power is a long term sustainable energy source, the costs of maintenance and de-comissioning are huge, not to mention the environmental impacts a Nuclear Power station has when it's reactors are no longer used.
Western governments are investigating the future soloution as being renewable energy in the form of Solar, Hydro, Wind, Geo-thermal and bio energy. Not only is this energy source abundant, but maintenance costs for energy conversion plants are cheaper and easier to maintain. Long term sustainability of the environment and energy are key to the future development of the world. Whether big industrial countries like America take note of the future environmental impacts on our planet from emissions, is another thing.
As for whether future wars will be fought over nuclear power, I very much doubt this.
