The World Health Organization (WHO) announced "gaming disorder" as a new mental health condition. (Who’s on first?) We of the MMORPG tribe have long joked about Evercrack, Warcrack and the even newer Crocaine but what classifies our fanish love with toxic addiction? According to WHO (don’t you mean whom...wait...) three main factors.

Typical... WHO can't usually find their collective (collectivist...)rear ends with both hands and a road map, so its little wonder they would eventually jump on this bandwagon. It would be little more than entertaining, if various groups and governments didn't listen to them (when it suits the groups and governments agenda of course...). lets hope this gets lost in the usual translation.

It's little more than a specific label for being addicted to a certain activity like any other.

Not sure each vein of "addiction" needs its own title.  Focusing too much on anything can be detrimental to one's health.

Isn't this really about control. Brand something as a "problem" and you can then go after it to regulate it. That is what government does if left unchecked. I do not personally believe that gaming is an addiction. I have been a AVID gamer for over 40 years. I have been able to function in society NORMALLY without gaming interfering one bit. My kids and their kids are also able to function normally. IF someone is so out of touch with their life going on around them, then they had a problem before they ever picked up a mouse, keyboard or controller.

Heck we've all seen the horror stories on Dr Phil about the husband who blew x amount of dollars on a gaming pc, or stopped paying attention to his family altogether. If someone wants to escape their problems or their life they will find any medium to do so..... I just hope people don't try to use this as a way back into video games make people kill one another.... =_=

I think once online gaming moved into styles of gameplay found only in casinos and betting shops this was bound to happen sooner or later.

Gambling is regarded as an addiction, bring that into gaming and it will be regard as an addiction as well.

The games (MMOs especially) are designed to promote addictive behavior. So yes, they can be an addiction. If you've gone 8-12 hours playing without taking breaks for food etc, then you're risking injury to your self and potentially others. Is it as bad as alcoholism or opioids, I suppose it depends on your viewpoint.

To me it's clear, one can become addicted to video games in an unhealthy degree. I have played these games to unhealthy degree at a point in my life.

Having it an official diagnosis is not a bad thing...

Yep and guess what, now the gaming industry actually has an official job position, monetization strategist, to better capitalize on this impulse control challenged portion of their customer base. People can scoff at the idea of gaming addiction all they want, but I'll bet it doesn't change the fact that most of them doing so are the same idiots following the Judas goat straight into the slaughterhouse.

The problem we have now is that we are never going to be able to say this is all an overreaction, which it is. While gambling stays in gaming it is nearly impossible to make that case.

Meh, i know everything has a scale or serious-ness.. but when i played games a lot, i liked them, it was helpful to me at the time. I was very much not able to do other activities back then. Had a failed back surgery and was dealing with the side affects and tired from pain killers, angry a little, wanting an escape from my every day struggles, i thin kin a way had i only regular entertainment i wouldn't be here right now. I was that depressed and sick, so i might have either not fought as hard to live or ended it myself, and in those cases, was it really such a bad thing to play games a lot? Now some people go a bit over board and put their actual life in jeopardy or ruin what they have or games i suppose, but not all of them and other addictions seems more harmful in my eyes.

The thing about addiction is how it never feels or seems like addiction. Back when I was deep in SWG I got off work around 7-8pm and played until 2am every night. If it was a good night 4am was common. I got up at 10am, hit the gym then off to work. I didn't go out as much and ignored friends asking to go to parties. I've never been a party type, preferring quieter social gatherings. I saw it as finding a hobby that fit me, saving money and not having to go to loud events. I never saw it as an addiction. More like a kid that didn't have a real niche finally finding it. I found my place and my people.

The fact that I kept working out and doing outdoors stuff reinforced my belief. Then, eventually, I was dropping work outs, not going outdoors anymore, waking up at 10 and playing for 1.5 hours before work. If I was in the middle of something I'd wait until the last minute and barely make it to work on time. In a bit of hilarity my manager and co-worker got into SWG and before we knew it we were all on the same schedule and all showing up a few minutes late (which was OK'd by the manager then LOL). A lot of fond memories came from that time period and I still remember it fondly which only serves to further convince myself it wasn't too much, but really, it was.
At the tender age of 12, I was doing the same things reference school.  It got to the point I would wake up an hour+ early to login to my Paladin on the Guinevere server in DAoC before school.  I was full-on addicted.  It wasn't all bad; I got a jump-start on being introduced to the internet and technology in a way my peers wouldn't be exposed to until much later in life.  By the time I entered high school, I had taught myself to type at a high pace, and I understood the burgeoning technological sphere far better than most of my generation.  It exposed me to perspectives from outside the U.S.- in particular, I made a very close friend out of a Canadian girl about 5 years my senior.  We stay in touch over a decade after our original meeting on a hillside outside Gothwaite.

However, it was detachment from the immediate world around me.  I, like you, withdrew from interacting with my peers.  Luckily, my interest in team sports (at the encouragement of my father) eventually led me to curb the habit in a large way, and I've never become so addicted to a video game experience since.
