We're back for Part 2! It's time to throw on the nostalgia goggles, as we jump back in to the original EverQuest. TheHiveLeader decided it was finally time to cover the game using one of the progression servers to get as close to the original game as possible. Does it hold up? Or has time left it wrinkled and broken? Let's jump into this two part adventure and find out!

I've gone back and played EQ a couple times over the years, and it always brings back a sense of nostalgia. It was my first MMO. But for me it's like my first love; pleasant to think about and wonder what might have been, but you know there is a reason you moved on.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

I even saw the slippery slope start, with the Beastmaster class in FFXI. It was the first time in an MMO (outside of UO, which in itself was a dangerous undertaking to go alone with the amount of murderers roaming the countryside) that someone was given the option to do things on their own, albeit slower than groups could. I remember thinking "Who is this class for? The whole point of an MMO is to be social and cooperative".
Anyway, I may just be projecting my own thoughts and feelings on this, but it seems there are far more constructive ways to scratch the "solo" itch than to dumb down and make much easier the content in MMOs.
A BIG difference is the sub class design in FFXI.When you see the very long road to leveling 20 different classes via the solo route of a BST,you soon realize ,ok this is too slow and i better group.
However i feel the idea of at least allowing a player to solo sometimes is a very good idea because it does not detract from the basic idea of a MMO being that soloing was so ineffective.
I really don't like altaholic games and that is what happens, players get bored and start making different players in essence accomplishing nothing to building up your character, just a new skin.
IMO EQ2 although a tad different was a big improvement on EQ1 and FFXI an even bigger improvement than both and to this day i have not seen any more improvements in the genre aside from graphics and some added "depth" ideas in FFXIV.99.9% of the games in this genre are VERY straight forward, kill quests, dungeon loot with possible pvp, thanks for playing.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
It is funny how any talk of old school must be framed in terms of nostalgia.
As much as I can agree that itrading was more rewarding without the bazaat, I can't agree that is enough to "ruin" the game. Luclin also brought us AA, the single most important mechanic in eq and mmo history, and that alone makes up for quite some flaws. The beastlord is my favorite class to play, which also came with luclin.. Or Koadics Endless Intellect and other long lasting buffs that really sparked life into the game. Also at that time, vast improvements to the client, luclin models and more. No, Luclin was an amazing expansion and the Bazaar could never be enough to counterweigh all the good stuff.

Pantheon is my only remaining hope for a good and fun game anytime in any kind of halfway reasonable future.
Shrug. Well I can say it was the one mechanic that made me stay in eq for years and the one mechanic that makes me not stay in other mmos for years. By "one mechanic" I mean, gaining xp / progressing character (virtually endless) at max level, like the AA system. Gear progression alone, is one dimensional to me.

Sad tale but MMORPG's can still be interactive, only thing is these days you have to fight for that privilege.
