And no, that's not rose glasses. I've played on numerous private servers (before they collapsed or were C&Ded).
There use to be a community on the servers.
...now, I've yet to see a familiar name in game or in chat. This CZR crap has ruined any way to build friends just by seeing the same peeps again and again. Now, you HAVE to have them in a guild or on your friends list - Which you then have to 'sync up' with them to see them.
((I'm here in FF14, and people /wave at me because we got into a conversation the day before. They remember me because I'm a permanent fixture on the server...I didn't just 'zone in' because "oh that zone was a lil under populated so we filled in some player slots". Basically, in WoW it feels like when you keep transferring to new schools...you don't make friends or even acquaintances.))
WoW, in general, also feels so much more toxic than, say, FF14. I log in, after being away for several months, and the first thing I see in Trade Chat is "smack talk" about the sexual orientation of one of the other players in the channel. - Not being all "ohnoes! I can't handle eet". I'm just saying the community in FF14 seems to be much more civil. Probably, again, due to CZR. Why behave if you'll never see those people again?
This is exactly rose colored glasses viewing imo
The servers are no more or less rowdy than they have ever been. Theres a reason why barrens chat is still droned on about to this very day. People talked bullshit back at launch and people still talk bullshit today.
I remember when Blizz added the global chat only to remove it just as fast because the chat was so toxic and that was way back when in vanilla. The community is now as its always been. You meet very few winners and a whole lot of jackasses.
But to say back in vanilla that somehow there were all these awesome folks and this epic community. Hardly. People were just as toxic then as now.
Its really about how you as the player approaches the game.
I played FF and WOW for the last few years and that community is no better or worse. In some ways I think FF is worse when it comes to the names you see of some people toons. They are insanely vulgar by cultural bs standards and when compared to WOW.
But no one gives a rats ass in FF about you any more or less than in WOW or any MMORPG for that matter. Its about who you meet individually on a case by case basis.
Thats why finding an amazing guild, while it can be hard as hell, is worth the effort to do so.
Having played these games for over 17 years now. I can count on 2 hands and maybe a foot the people who became offline best friends. Hell, I met my wife in TBC. True story.
But I could write a list the size of santas to the amount of donkeys I have met in WOW DAOC UO EQ 1 and 2 Lineage 2 and the other countless amounts of games ive played.
Again a few winners and a massive amount of donkeys. But thats how life tends be whether online or IRL
Funny enough I am playing Vanilla again on a private server while taking some time off from retail wow and FF for now.
Nothing like doing the run from southshore to sfk and doing 45 mins of pvp in hillbrad before you ever make it to SFK lol
I also rolled a warrior. SO I should be 60 by time xmas comes
the guys speaking are the ones who have ruined wow , not interested in devs that started in 2008+, they took the game and ruined it as far as im concerned , lets just hope they dont ruin classic re-release

Well we remember different things then. Because I remember there being a great deal of competitiveness and barbs between alliance and horde before cross server matchmaking ruined it. The main reason they went cross server was so as not to appear like their failing if they consolidated servers. That for me was the beginning of the end.
