Women only cancer fun run!

HocheteHochete Member CommonPosts: 1,210

I like in Cambridge (UK), and recently have been hearing adverts for a 'women ONLY cancer fun run'. Am I the only one that finds this increadibly offensive? Isn't this positive discrimination at it's very worst? I think it's disgusting to entirely dissallow men to run in this event to raise money for cancer research charities. I may begin to understand if it were a run for breast cancer or cervical cancer, but it's just cancer in general! No men allowed?!

Can you IMAGINE the outcry if a 'Man only cancer fun run' were organised? It'd probably lead to a world war, so why can women get away with it? It's because of rediculous positive descrminiation laws, the same kinda laws that reward illegal immigrants to the UK with free cars, free money, free houses etc.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts on this kinda thing are? I tried to find a link for this 'run' but couldn't seem to find anything, i've just heard it advertised a few times on the radio.

Wow well, I kinda with you on this one Hohbein.

The people that know me on these forums know that I'm usually the first one to jump on board with female equality issues, I can get a little crazy about it even :) Yes yes, I know...

But it really doesn't seem right that any gender be left out of such an event, especially considering one of such importance like cancer research. I've seen things like in my area too but never to the extent of excluding men or women outright.

Currently at my university theres a men's only Row for Research (cancer/lukemia) end of school year event happening. Basically the men's sports teams found that only about 22% of attendents at the funding events for cancer research had been men over this past school year, so they wanted to come up with a way for the boys to get really involved, so the row teams have been training for a big race, showing "newbie" teams (completely comprised of men) how to go about it and the school is funding the cost of the equipment and so on.

Anyways !!! It's been a huge success so far, I think there's somewhere around 30 teams of 4 guys each that will be competing on race day, which I believe is about 3 weeks from this upcomming sunday. I think this is a great example of why perhaps a gender is and was singled out but just to clear it up, in this local event teams are certainly more then allowed to have female members on the teams.

Probably a PR stunt though, and a pretty clever one at that.

The coverage of this thing must be huge, not for the cancer part but for the 1 gender part?

Doing an all women thing like this still works, as you said, had it been male only the bitching would have never stopped and the whole thing would have probably been attacked by some crazy feminist group.

Like here in sweden we now have a political party called feministic initiative, completely geared towards getting women to vote for them, of course males are allowed to do it to but their entire agenda is aimed at and for females.

I can not think of anything in this country in the past 50 years that have set women apart from men more then this thing, like shooting yourself in the foot, over and over and over again, I can not even imagine anything one could do that would be worse for cause of equal rigths then what these people ( women ), do.

    Totally counter productive.
