My first impressions of Trove (30 hours in. 5 days since started) (LONG)

So figured I'd post my impressions. Only been playing 5 days, but quite a lot of hours in the game. So lets get straight to it

First I'll get the few negatives (there is really only one, one is more nitpicky and really that is it) out of the way first, since I don't really have any besides one quite big one

...the god damn freakin' camera is something that comes straight out of Mario 64 for the Nintendo. Holy cr** is the camera the worst thing I've ever seen in an MMO and modern game. Heck, I play Asheron's Call emulator still in 2018 and that has a better camera than this game.

Hm, here is a jumping area to go up higher in a dungeon. Lets try using the jumping block things to go higher to reach other platforms...but...WAIT! TOO EASY! LETS ANNOY THE PLAYER AND ZOOM THE CAMERA ALL DIRECTIONS BECAUSE OF WALLS AND ZOOM ALL THE WAY IN SO THE PLAYER CANT USE SKILL OR EVEN SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING FOR JUMPING PUZZLES HAHAHAHA SURPRISE MOTHATRUCKER WE ZOOMED IN A CERTAIN WAY SO YOU CANT SEE WHERE THE NEXT PLATFORM IS! HAHAHAHAHA WE TROLLED YOU

most annoying thing about the game. Luckily the rest of the game is a lot better

For a more nitpicky thing. The way you drag blocks when building is kinda bad. Its usually quicker if I manually place each block. You can't drag in an area, and certain places you drag makes the blocks go higher for some reason. That and sometimes the building area that shows where block will go disappears and block ends up in weird places...dunno what thats about

Though Geode area...its not really a negative to me but kinda bad especially if they are all the same even the harder geode worlds. But at least tier 1 of the early geode "worlds" (three of them, Moonglow or something, Verdiant or whatever and a 3rd), pretty sure each of the 3 geode "worlds" are a cut/paste of each other. I'm pretty sure they have same exact layout lol. I dunno if tier 2 varies them up or the harder "worlds" are different. But I can say for 95% sure the tier 1 are carbon copies of each other as far as layout goes.

Side note. For tier, its just how far you can go...so I have gas level 2 that I upgraded, which means I can just go to the harder part. And doing quest line, it focuses on the easier geode worlds as far as I've seen. But I imagine I'll progress to harder worlds later.

Now on to other parts of the game

Love the building in the game, I worked really hard on my current cornerstone (house area) and made it really awesome. First house I made was bad though, but second one I designed it pretty neat with a floating island (still work in progress) and a kinda glass "dome" kinda theme. And I dug underground and made windows to look out under the ocean subnautica style. Area is kinda small, but not hard to work with at all. Just gotta go up and below.

Game is grindy, but so far it doesn't really feel like a grind to me. Black Desert however felt like a grind within 1 hour of playing (not sure exactly how long, its been a long time, but pretty sure after an hour I already felt the grind). There are a lot of things to do in Trove and work toward, so if one thing gets boring...I go do something else. But you probably gotta like being creative and building, cause thats been most fun part for me. That and exploring Geode stuff.

Love the classes for most part. Seem all pretty balanced. My favorite though is the Dracolyte, its a ton of fun playing a dragon-esque character. Only real MMO to do anything similar as far as playable dragons go is Istaria.

For Geode. Despite the blatant copy/paste layout of each of the caverns in tier 1...its probably most fun part of the game for me. Its VERY VERY VERY rare for an MMO to focus on...exploration and crafting...its why I wanted to try Trove. I don't really have too much to say about it though, but I've been enjoying it. Though I did stumble upon a giant crystal tree in one of the geode worlds. That was amazing.

As for combat. Trove combat is pretty straight forward...however I've died more in Trove than I've died in WoW since WoD rofl. I find Trove combat easy, but I die so fast lol. Combat in the harder worlds is pretty tough even though I have high power rank and the right level for the world (the neon world). A lot harder than anything I generally faced in WoW out in the world, ignoring the harder tiers of the co-op instanced group content. But for out in the open, just in the world, I've been finding Trove a lot harder.

And thats really major points. For community, its really good...though do have the trolls as usual. It does seem a bit weird since I can tell a lot of kids/teens play it and I'm an adult. But I did join a club (pretty much a guild) and I know there are other adults in the club too, so I guess not too weird. Which, I did join an awesome club and that really helped a lot cause I didn't really know anyone before that. Joining a guild/clan/club whatever its called is really what an MMO is about for me, otherwise better to play singleplayer games :P

Though I do want to end off that...a lot of the things in the game (weapons, mounts, dungeons etc) a lot of them are player made and been put in the game. I think thats really awesome. Probably actually my favorite mechanics of the game is how they put in player made assets and what not so others can find them and use them.

As for type of game its for. I'd probably say one who likes both exploration/socializing and being creative. Combat as far as I've seen isn't genre changing, pretty simple, though still die a lot despite that lol. But the creative part and the socializing are best parts for me, though guess socializing can be done in most MMOs. Exploration though is awesome, especially in the Geode areas...ignoring the copy/paste layout (at least for tier 1 of the three starter geode worlds). I dunno if its always a copy/paste layout past tier 1, or what the harder worlds look like...but hopefully they don't copy/paste the layout in each world. That be pretty lazy

But otherwise I've been enjoying the game a lot. 30 hours in just a short amount of time is rare for me in any game, so it must do something right for me.

Oh. I didn't even touch the most common complaint of the game

Yeah, I've played 30 hours, during a weekend, and only got lag once. And might not even been lag, but could been a weird glitch.

Dunno how anyone complains of lag, cause I've literally only got lag once during 30 hours. Must have bad PCs or a bad internet or something I dunno. But I really only got lag bad enough where I had to restart the game and then it was fixed. Maybe the lag is in the endgame areas? I dunno, but dont know what anyone is talking about of how the game is badly optimized and lags all the time lol. Maybe they fixed it "recently"? Dunno. But I literally never lag except that one time lol.

And in fact it was today that it lagged when I was building my cornerstone. First time I had actual lag. And it was kinda weird cause suddenly everyone disappeared off my map, the hairstyles at the barbershop workbench disappeared but chat was normal and I could see people moving normally. But relogging fixed it. It didn't even stutter or actually "lag", it more like glitched out or something.

But game runs as good as WoW for me lol.

And last post as far as the first impressions go

For the cash shop. I find its pretty reasonable. Everything on the cash shop can be gotten in-game without spending money as far as I've seen. I did pic up the starter pack though and got a dragon mount (its a black/purple one that has a bunch of stat boosts, forgot the name of it since its kinda long). But I guess I can see how some may see it pay to win.

Its still way better than black desert cash shop is, which most items you can't get in-game and those that can is like a 1% chance (maybe even less lol) literally of getting it on the BDO marketplace cause of bots lol. And actually a really decent cash shop surprisingly compared to other Trion games. I don't see anything game breaking about their cash shop compared to most free MMOs so its fine to me.

I tried the bomber royale mode. It was fun, but its pretty much a get to max level faster kind of thing. I think its made for people who already leveled a character up to 30, since you get a TON of exp from it. I went up 4 levels in only 5 or 6 games lol. I'd rather level up a character normally.

I'm also playing the Revenant. It feels like a death knight from WoW in that its a walking death machine. I can do (normal mode) shadow towers (which is a ton of fun) with no issues at all with Revenant...even solo. And I'm only level 18 and they pose no challenge lol. And I can do dungeons and that is even easier.

Guess revenant is the easy mode class like DK is in WoW rofl. All the other classes I unlocked or trialed are WAY harder than Revenant. Not only do they tank and can take a hit...damage is great too. I think its due for a nerf :P
