Seriously, I just finished reading the news about legends of ares saying how as members complained about having to subscribe to fileplanet to get in the beta, that they changed it. So I go heading off to fileplanet seeing if I could give the game a try and I notice that they have taken legends of ares off the front page.
The only front page way of getting to it, is thanks to the popular files bit and instead of saying open (because it is open beta now isn't it?) They say it's closed in capital letters which I bet they're hoping people will assume that nobody else can get in.
This is just absolutely terrible, it's quite obvious that Legends of Ares is a lowkey mmorpg over our area (maybe in asia it's bigger?) but it's definately different over here. So they need ways to promote their game and make people interested and fileplanet was good for that and they basically give them the middle finger.
I hope other mmorpg developers remember this and give fileplanet the middle finger in the future. I don't mind fileplanet having subscriber only betas but when a company wants their beta to go for everyone, it just isn't right to take the game down from front page like that and put CLOSED on it.

I pay them a nice chunk of change on a yearly basis.
My downloads from them avergage 1.1mb/sec.
I have downloaded over 200gb worth of games/movies/patches/etc in the past year and a half.
I have been able to participate in A TON of exclusive betas/trials/alphas/etc.
When I played WoW I never had to wait for the crappy Blizzard downloader.
I have access to a number of *decent* games through their HitPoints program.
I have purchased subscriptions for two of my best friends who also use and love the service.
That being said, you were able to get the file that you went to FilePlanet for. WTH are you crying about, it wasn't *easy* to find because it was no longer glaring at you on the main page? OMG be less lazy please.

Oh well !
Problem with me before was I'd pay just to get into an exclusive beta. it was my fault for not realizing exclusive can only be that for so long. I was stupid enough to pay just to try one game, I can't blame anyone but me.
I used to get mad at Fileplanet too. I don't use them that much, but I did finally realize a few things.
Sure they're dicks about wanting money all the time, but atleast they're rather straightforward about it. It's not like they're trying to hide their 'Subscribe now or else!' stuff.. Having betas only for people who pay is f'ing retarded in my book, and is totally the opposite of what a beta is supposed to be about. Most people don't care about betas they only care about testing the game though, so it's hard to fault fileplanet for treating it as a cash cow instead of a TEST which it's supposed to be. Paying for exclusive demos and trials is one thing but a test is supposed to be a whole different animal.
Anyways, that stuff aside, you do have to admit they have a pretty decent service otherwise. I've waited in time less on fileplanet than on other 'wait to download unless you pay' sites, and generally Fileplanet gives me a good 300+kb/s even though I'm not a subscriber.
Other than making people pay for betas I'd say they're a pretty good service. Sure they have 'Subscribe Now' on just about everything on the site, but atleast it's nothing unexpected

In short, people are paying for something that can be done better for free.

Get over it.
I've been using fileplanet for years without ever having a problem. If you're getting server errors it's your ISP, not Fileplanet. I download TONS of software from them every month.

Erm... I'm not sure what you're trying to say there. I am a fileplanet member and have been for a couple years. Before that though I was a 'free' member for a couple years as well so I've used file planet both ways. In fact even during my 'subscriber' times there have been a couple times where I cancelled it because I was cutting un-necessary costs. Right now I'm a member... about 3 months ago I had been cancelled for like 6 months and was riding the 'free wagon'. So I've seen it both ways. *never* have I gotten 'server' errors from Fileplanet. And i just pulled the DDO client down for a free trial the other night (and promptly deleted it after trying the game for like 3 hours... YUCK what a waste of time.. I pity anyone actually paying to play that POS.
Anyhooo.... my point stands. It's much ado about nothing. The link on the front page was for subscribers only. Griping that it didn't work if you were riding the 'freeloader express' (not an insult, I have done it too) is silly. And griping that it's gone now is silly too because the special offer is over.
