"Too far" in what sense? "Too far" as in "waiting too long before he grabbed his gun"?
I've known guys like that 22-year-old. He was probably a lout. The only crime committed here is that of the father waiting as long as he did to set this shit straight.
Maybe you should get the father's point of view before you skitter off to the nearest forum and post crappy topic titles based on third-rate reporting.
Bleh, and Attempted Murder? Excuse me while I vomit.
Kai
The only time you should ever be willing to use a gun to make your point is when you are either willing to kill someone or willing to die...because chances are either will happen.
Heh, anyone remember that Simpson episode were Homer gets a gun and uses it for EVERYTHING?
Kinda reminds me of this.

lol? i take it you don't have any children? why would he even need to grab his gun in the first place? let alone fire it anywhere near his son? why not just unplug the computer? or some other means to get him to stop playing?
true attempted murder is kind of a stretch if he never actually shot his son, but the dad should be locked up for being stupid enough to risk killing his son over laundry, if nothing els.

So this "kid" is what? 22 years old? I probably would've grabbed the gun and forced him out of the house about four years prior to this event. Go to shool or GET A JOB!!!
It was an over-reaction, but I totally understand where the father was coming from.
Anyways, before we go judge anyone, we don't know the full circumstances. My mother tells me that I'm spending too much time infront of the computer(and I probably am... ) but yet I managed to do my choirs, go to school, have friends and go to social events. We don't really know enough of the situation. Only thing that is sure, it's the father is pretty stupid. Point a loaded unsecured weapon in the direction of his kid... jesus. He must be pretty weak if he has to resort to violence to get his point across.
All he was asked to do was do the laundry.
It would take less than 5 minutes to actually START the 1st load.Less than 10 to transfer and start the 2nd load.
Anyway if he is 22 and NOT in school its time to get a job and move on out.I actually moved out my junior year of high school and still managed to graduate.
So IMHO this guy is just LAZY and his dad is perhaps a bit extreme but has the right idea.

"LOL?" Of course I don't have children. I'm only 21.
As I pointed out in my first reply, perhaps too subtilely (shoulda used
emboldened caps), we lack the father's point of view here. To all of
you (just about everyone...sigh) who think these kinds of incidents are
about nothing more than laundry and video games, well, here's a
clue--have you guessed it yet?--you're wrong. Try reading the article
again. And by "reading the article again," I don't mean that you
should read that worthless piece of bias a second time. I mean you
should weigh the "information" in the article against the facts of the
likely reality.
Kids like this one are the type that constantly neglect responsibility,
constantly live off the dole (or their parents) without any inclination
towards recompensation (again, folks, read between the lines: I'm not
thinking purely monetarily) in any form, and (as an aside, here's the
problem with people today in general) constantly develop this absurd
sense of Entitlement from out of nowhere.
Now, granted, I've done a lot of conjecturing in this post (in part
because that article basically sucked), but I'd bet every penny
(admittedly, this isn't much--I'm still only 21) to my name that what
I've described above is the case. I've already seen too many apathetic
bums in my lifetime to not know any better.
We learn responsibility by growing up. Responsibility requires
lessons. Lessons are taught through actions, not well-wishing. Take
your hyper-sentimentality elsewhere; it's unwarranted here. The boy
ought to be thankful he still has a place to live and be worthless.
To Jackcolt above: lo siento. I went a-judgin' as you were writing that, but at least I'm judging in the right direction (*hint*hint*).
Speaking of Judging:
Kraetus,
i agree with you partly... At least with ur opinion about "Kids like this one"... You got a point there.
But... We don't learn responsibility by growing up, it's not a natural gift. If you mean the socializing process when you grow up, i'd agree.
Even if responsibility requires lessons, and lessons are taught through actions, this lessons just must not be firearm enforced. This is just ridiculous and in no way related to hyper-sentimentality.
His dad should have kicked his ass out of the house way earlier, but using a gun when you just ran out of words is just so weak, as someone else mentioned earlier here.
I'm just glad that firearms and this mentality(to own firearms in generel) do not belong to every second household in europe, where i come from.
edit : to the post below mine,
kind of what i was thinking
where do we live nowerdays, that everything has to be solved in a violent way, if the first few minutes of talking bring no results/solutions.
"The bullet hit the wall about three feet from where the son was sitting."
not that i disagree with everything you wrote, but it seems that you are assuming that "Kids like this one are the type that constantly neglect responsibility" but yet at the same time claim that "we lack the father's point of view here." (witch is true) but don't we lack the sons point of view as well?
for all we know the 22 year old son could be working, paying bills, and playing alot of games in his spare time, or the father could be a raging alcoholic or bipolar or something.... i agree the article isn't very in depth and there isn't alot of facts.
the only facts (in the article) are the father pulled out his gun and shot the monitor, while the bullet landed only 3 feet from where the son was sitting.
don't you think that is a bit extreme? what would you say if his son got killed by the bullet? why couldn't the father handle the situation in a mature civil manner? why did the father let it escalate to the point where he felt he needed to use a gun to get his point across? why doesn't he just kick his son out?
you might think this is okay or how a father should discipline his son, but me being a father i sure as hell dont....but that is just me i guess
BTW just because you are only 21 doesn't mean you don't have any kids, many people have had kids even younger than that.

I think the attempted murder charge is a bit high but he should definitely be charged with something that carries a similar penalty. Not sure what the max on wreakless endangerment is. They can't hit him with child abuse becase at 22 that no longer applies.
He's a moron and deserves to go to jail regardless of how lacadasical his son is. You *never* point a gun at another human being unless you fully intend to use it. Period.

and if he doesn't , just shoot him. Great way to handle things
He should have used an axe, anyhow.
I liked this line:
"Langenderfer is in the Pinellas County jail charged with one count of
attempted murder, (accused of trying to kill his son, not the computer.)"
OMG SUM1 KILL3D MEH COMPUTAR MACHIN3!!!!!!1111

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby
The father's an idiot and needs to spend some time in jail. Arguing with your kid (or an adult who lives with you, however you want to spin it) about not doing the laundry is not a justification for deadly force, and that's what you're threatening when you wave a gun around. I'm not sure why anyone is defending the guy, since what he did is not justified even if the son is a lazy bastard who never does the laundry like he claimed.
Also, guns don't just 'go off' on their own or from some magic gun-firing rays, you pull the trigger to make it fire. Saying that the gun just went off is like saying that your car just drove and hit someone, and no one believes that.
"Too far" in what sense? "Too far" as in "waiting too long before he grabbed his gun"?

alright dude your a freakin idiot no one including fathers should use a gun to make a point.....so i guess everytime my son does something i don't like i guess i should get my trusty boomstick out and aim it at his feet.......there are other means of dealing with things of this nature think before you speak or people might start to consider you a psycho!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but this incident happened on Monday afternoon (a workday), and they were both home.
