It’s not been a good year for brand spanking new games in the MMORPG realm. Heck, when was the last time it was? But that doesn’t mean the games we already have haven’t been making a strong showing. In fact, some of the most popular games in the world right now are those that have been out for years already. Here is our list of the Best MMOs of 2018 So Far (in no particular order).

Because the MMO genre is on a downward slide. It hit the top of the bell curve about a decade ago and got oversaturated with subpar MMO's. Since then most businesses don't want to take the chance on them. Gamers anymore prefer quick efficiency that FPS's and MOBA's offer to the time gating and patient waiting of MMO's.
Personally I prefer MMO's because I like worlds like UO and what WoW used to be but if an MMO wants to survive in the current world they need to offer more convenience methods (LFG, quick battlegrounds, etc.)

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'

'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

Right? Looking at this list as I wrote it - I'm very happy to see some games that are years old doing so well still. But come on... where's the GOOD new stuff?

You know Bill, I opened this story expecting to slag on all of your non MMO choices, but was surprised that I couldn't
Only one title I wouldn't have included but have decided now to give it a try, (never know, I might be wrong, happens occassionally) and I greatly appreciated you keeping it to released titles.
Well done sir, well done.

Then I had help building my first PC, and got into WoW quickly followed by LOTRO. I started to understand how much gameplay was involved in a MMORPG, and all of the relationship building that could come from it. Then I understood the 'value' of spending so much time and money on only a few games.
Since the 'value' has gone down over the years I'm kind of back to thinking how weird of a concept MMORPG's are again....ha
I think along the way dev's got confused and thought I wanted 'value meal' gameplay, instead of deep gameplay that provided great entertainment value for time invested.
Gut Out!
What, me worry?
There are no MMOs out there right now of the sort I want to play (that I haven't already played).
I'm not gaming.
I'm sad.
I was also, but then I went back to Skyrim w/ mods, and made a few different classes to check out those I've never played, and I'm really liking it again. And I also found this site that has all of the ES books in one place I'll be reading for funsies as well: https://www.imperial-library.info/books/all/by-title
I'm gearing up for ESO and ES6! ha

Make a game exactly like wow's formula but base it on starwars and call it SWG 2 and you will have a new king. Truly a sad list of games on here to call MMO's

A "Best of 2018" list does NOT need to only container new MMOs. I assumed, based on the title, that this was a list of the best MMOs in 2018 old and new.
MMOs are incredibly expensive to build and take a LOT more time than the average SP or MP game due to the incredibly complex systems put in place and, even more so, the complex backend that has to exist to support them. There are MMOs in development and on the way, some really awesome looking ones, but we are in the middle of a lull while those games are worked on (assuming they release).
That all said, this list is filled with great MMOs that target a variety of people. EVE with it's Sandbox PvP; WoW with it's Raiding/Dungeon community; GW2 with it's story patches, Raiding and Fractals; so on and so forth. Just because I don't like Warframe doesn't mean it's not a good game (or fun for others).
POE = ARPG.
With the way development is today and every game is rushed out the door, all that endurance and time/money spent or wasted to have the game reach a point of maturity where it becomes good feels more like masochism to the point that such a wild venture to me is the true meaning of hardcore today.

Although it was quite conventional in many ways, City of Heroes became the one game I subscribed to long-term. Wonderful freedom of character creation -- even today, only Champions Online matches it or possibly does more, although some people may tout the better graphics and many options for tweaking fine details that many games have these days (and mean little to nothing to me, most can hardly be seen during gameplay). Background stories to create and read. A world that, despite the graphics of the time, made me feel at home. The Archetypes had distinct power sets, and playing one felt distinctly different from playing others. Pinning down whole groups of enemies as a controller. Sniping as a blaster. Making a real difference by healing teammates. Tanking like a tank. Going crazy with scrapper lock. I think mostly, though, I liked playing a game where all the players were on the same side, all heroes, and total strangers would invite you to join their team, sometimes when you didn't even have your LFG flag up yet.
Ah well, it changed over the years but all of that was still available, although more rare as players began fighting each other, even being villains when CoV came out, and then forming their own cliques of friends playing their own missions in Architect, and finally the whole thing was pulled out from under us.
There's some "spiritual successors" being worked on, but I'm still hoping for something even more immersive. I keep seeing games talking about being "open world" and "sandbox" but they're often "survival" games where you have to learn to avoid the many (often nonsensical) ways to DIE, DIE, DIE. And I haven't yet really felt that the worlds were natural and all that open. You can wander around more than in other games but (for example) the land is laid out like a game board, with resources located according to level zones, not the geographical features. Crafting is still generally based on pre-set recipes, not something you work out based on the qualities of the materials.
Worlds Adrift is pretty fresh, lots of exploring to do. If only it wasn't set up so that killing other players' characters was the fast and easy way to get ahead. And it also has a lot of survival challenges, ways to die that people in that world would have taken steps to avoid or lessen the frequency of, even with the respawn chambers.
Dual Universe both appears to have great potential and appears to be making progress towards having a good game to play and not putting it off indefinitely. Again, though, it looks like it depends on how they deal with the potential for players to make other players miserable.
Warframe is a nice PvE team game, but you have to be in one of those freaky armors (they all look basically the same: weird and UGLY) and it feels more like a limited-player FPS platformer game, and somehow claustrophobic for a space game.
Oh, sorry, old man rambling again...
