    Same list as 2015? 2016? 2017?
  • zinger71zinger71 Member UncommonPosts: 68
Not a single new game on this list. Illustrates the sad state of the MMORPG.
  • KaliGoldKaliGold Member UncommonPosts: 138
I have had my fill of mmos for now and am enjoying single player games such as Fallout 4 and Skyrim 5. Neverwwinter is a decent mmo for beginners, but you hit a wall in short order and then realize that most of the original dungeons are still gone and there is very little to do.

Pretty boring list tbh atleast for me.

Havant found a good MMORPG in a long time that i enjoy, Darkfall and archage were the most recent ones i enjoyed but eventually they screwed those games up with either RNG/pay to win or poor development cycles :(
To many MMO trying to mimic WoW unfortuently which isnt gonna work for them because if remake WoW people arnt gonna start again from scrtahc when there already got a max level on arguable the same game with a new skin.
Some promising games on the horizon though Crowfall, Camalot unchained for example (Mainly Crowfall for me), Intrigued with a game called Peria Chronicles aswell but little to know bout that one so far.

I need a PvP game that doesnt focus on PvP i know it makes little sense when said that way but PvP games fail because they focus to much on the PvP aspect the other players soon leave and then there no one left for PvP aspects. Darkfall is a good example of this it was amazingly populated at start and due to too much focus on the hardcore PvP focused it lost alot of its other players then there was very little content for PvP players.
Devs wanting to make a PvP game here a tip dont focus on PvP foxus on keeping other players like the crafters, the PvE , explorers and so on. Keep these players entertained you will keep the PvP players entertained once you loose those players you will loose PvP players due to lack of content for them to do and then your game is dead.
You could easily make a PvP game with full loot that work if you focus on good PvE content/crafting and so on with PvP in mind from the start for example gather hotspots (Runescape a good example of hotspots basicly x spots always had x amount of ores there for gathering but PvP players also know thats a hot spot for gathering players and so on. If harvesters get hit often there they find body guards to protect them aka PvP player in there guild and so on.

I appologise this turned into a rant half way through :p

Game kinda flopped due to lack of content to do at any period of time (Everything got timed locked PvP 3 times a day for an hour period, High level dungeons can only be done a couple times a day and usualy dropped nothing) and no balance at all between classes and so on.

MMO's can be so profitable, I'm just not sure why no one has been able to get the formula right since WOW.

Make a game exactly like wow's formula but base it on starwars and call it SWG 2 and you will have a new king. Truly a sad list of games on here to call MMO's

Not true, swtor was a typical theme park mom and it wasn't very good. I say make swg with bdo graphics and blizzard polish.

Those criticizing the list content are presumably waiting for the next big thing. Whilst those who are happily playing one of the mmo's, like myself, smile a bit when they see it on there.

The first group I think will never be satisfied, as there will never be a next big thing. The market has matured to a level where we have small increments - if any - rather than evolution.

I actually smile more at the people like you, who smugly think you're in some better position than someone else simply because you're willing to waste time and money on more derivative junk in this genre.

Other genres are as mature as this one, but they release high quality games that innovate. MMORPGs are almost unique in how stale the genre has gotten, and how derivative the titles being released are - while massively moving towards cash shop economies that depend on more people playing the game (or overspending in them) to generate increasing amounts of revenue.

WoW being in the position it's in is not a good thing about the MMORPG genre. It shows just how awful it has been for over a decade.

What we have now is over saturation of B-List titles. GW2, ESO, BDO? Secret World...? Neverwinter???

Most of the people who complain about that list are likely in a position where they are gaming a lot, but spending the majority of their time in other genres of gaming... Because we are no longer dependent on a specific genre of games for a Social Gaming experience. It's not 2001 anymore.

Discord, Teamspeak, Mumble, Ventrilo, etc. exist.

So does Xbox Live and PlayStation Network...

And most other genres of games have evolved to the point where they are practically just as social as MMORPGs are (even more so, in some cases).

The entire genre is becoming irrelevant to increasing numbers of people because the developers are too busy playing it safe and throwing out increasing amounts of derivative junk.

Pantheon is basically EQ with a better graphics engine and some shit added to it, and that's the game so many people here are "anxiously awaiting." That's how bad it's gotten.

It is kind of ironic that in the age of GAaS (games as a service) the most obvious one of them all, the mmorpg, is being hugely neglected. Too much of an effort I guess.

Right? Looking at this list as I wrote it - I'm very happy to see some games that are years old doing so well still. But come on... where's the GOOD new stuff?

Unfortunately, we just have to wait for the next wave which is a year or more out. Pantheon and Ashes of Creation are both on my radar.
  • GutlardGutlard Member RarePosts: 1,019
I'm not sure if I would rather hear about a game for years, and be bored about it before it even releases, or be totally surprised by a full release of a game I knew nothing about.

I'd like to try the latter for once I think, but I guess that's not how business works... :(

    Gut Out!

    What, me worry?

  • ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 24,445
Bill's MMO For The Win would have been great for this article, the footage would have shown us Warframe was not a MMO for example.

But was wondering what happened to it, being in front of a video camera is not a punishment...honest. :)

Do we need a Fortnite-type of MMORPG that lights a fire on the industry, or a Radical Heights-type of MMORPG that tries to do something different (but would actually have to succeed)? Sorry for the BR examples, but couldn't think of anything else at the precise time...

It's kind of hard to justify these lists when there isn't really much new blood to shake things up. The list from 2017, or Hell, even 2016 could easily be copy pasted today.

Actually, I thought that was what this was.

Those are not B list titles.

You may not like them, might even hate them but they are not "B list."

And given how much time and money goes into making an mmorpg, I wonder if there are any "B list" titles? I can certainly see games that would be considered C list given their level of polish and creakyness.

What is the source of this statement about ESO... "with now over 11 million folks worldwide enjoying the world of Nirn online"? I'm a fan of ESO, but I think it was at the end of last year I saw an article about 8.5M users, another forum thread said 2.5M. Would love to know where these numbers come from and if they are 'active'.

So, the MMO I've played the most this year is LOTRO. I stopped playing during Moria and went back recently.. had a great time. One of the few games that retains it's classic feeling and immersion even after all these years.

That would be on my list.

For now though, I'm getting prepared for one of the most fun experiences you can have in MMO gaming these days.. a WoW expansion launch. It'll be a crazy mess and it's always a fun event to be a part of.

It's account numbers, not active players and definitely not subscribers.

Thy have been periodically updating this in official statements. They announced 10 back in Nov. 2017:

    http://comicbook.com/gaming/2017/11/29/elder-scrolls-online-10-million-players-celebration-bethesda/

I did see the 11 million update somewhere but don't have that link handy.

    A pretty accurate list IMO.
Largely what I expected to see, given that we haven't gotten a lot of new things on the MMO front.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
