Another Update, Another step towards AFK progression

deadtrackdeadtrack Member UncommonPosts: 57
The BDO August Update continues the progression toward a purely AFK game.  On it's initial release it had an energy system similar to Archeage.  This allowed limited tasks including cooking, gathering etc.  At some point the energy was removed so tasks such as cooking/processing could be done nearly infinitely.  There where weight limits, but it was a huge step towards AFK progression which also includes worker empires.

This AFK progression was controversial and those who did not AFK 24/7 where really losing out.  You're workers didn't continue and you gained far less energy.  You essentially lost millions of profit every day.

The AFK was about money/silver in the beginning.  Then it was announced an AFK way to Level Your Characters.  It was only a matter of time before this would become the Meta.  The original release was to expensive to level this way, but Pearl Abyss put it on the table.  Level Via AFK.

The current update is another step in the AFK direction.  It adds new ways to AFK level.

  • If you use the Book of Training in your Inventory (I), a Book of Training buff icon will appear on top of your screen.
  • While Book of Training buff is in effect, you can Interact (R) with the scarecrows of each town to proceed with the training.
    • There are different number of scarecrows positioned in each town, but please keep in mind 1 scarecrow can be occupied by 1 adventurer at a time.
It's a sloppy implementation as well.  It's like a test release which people have already pointed out makes people practically wait in a Scarecrow Que for use.  No serious developers would implement such a poorly designed system.

The bigger picture is the real problem.  Being able to AFK progress your way through the game puts it in a category of AFK mobile games.  If you have been following the podcasts you should be well aware of what that means.

This just isn't the right direction for a game which still has one of the best combat systems of any current  MMO.

The main reason I quit, too much AFK is built into the game. I felt like I had to keep this game running 24 hrs a day.

Is there AFK node wars or is that the only bastion of active gameplay left?

I think the point of the game is to AFK 24/7 so you can compete in Castle Sieges, only to find someone has existed longer and obtained infinite power via AFK/Payouts so you still have no chance.

It's akin to Lineage II hero's where they gave insane power to ........... the most powerful players in the game ensuring easy victory without challenge.  These systems where not well thought out.

That does belong in it's own discussion though:  The problem of giving rewards/incentive/power to top clans in MMO's which have already proven they are the strongest forces on the server.  In many cases they are not only rewarded, but given the absolute highest rewards in the game.

AFK is why I stopped playing as well.

I set my character up carting goods between two settlements and left them doing it overnight. Came back to it in the morning and thought.. that just cost me loads in electric because they extended progression to require this idiotic type of thing. I did it once and uninstalled afterwards.

It is completely unnecessary. There is not one purpose it serves other than to increase concurrent login numbers and punish those that don't do it.

I can't understand why anyone accepts it.

This is the prime reason I will never play a game with this mechanic.  It's not good for your machine either.

The afk mecchanic It's great actually, it's one of the most brilliant things i have ever seen in a videogame, is not necessary to progress in game + you don't get too much with it but at the same time helps those who don't have much free time + it fill those gaps when a person has to take breaks to go eat /bathroom etc, in other games you would leave your character without doing anything productive.
The only problem is that it annoys those who want the decline of the game, because it pushes people to stay logged for a longer period of time.

It annoys people who think that, as a pastime, games should focus on creating systems that engage the player so they can enjoyably pass their time, not rack up electricity usage and hardware wear.

AFK is also why I did stop playing, while I like games that I can have moments I tab out doing some shenanigan I need, BDO abuses it.

It caters to AFK play too much it feels like zombie players doing their own zombie things, I wish their direction after launch would have been different. :/

BDO does abuse it and it's creating problems that never existed before.  If you look at a 5 year span most players would be in the 1-2 year range of actually playing.  Very few hardcore players would actually play the entire time and if they had, they earned it.

What AFK mechanics introduce is EVERYONE plays ALL THE TIME.  If your not AFKing 24/7 you likely just ditched the game.

So new players are now competing with AFKers not really active players.  A hardcore gamer could step in 2 years later and catch up.  Many players would only have a few months of actual play.  However, AFK mechanics ensures they are buried.

I agree. I left the game initially because of the inevitable forced PVP, but then came back (twice) and eventually realized if I wanted to succeed and make ingame money, I have to AFK progress.  Not happening.

Beautiful game, interesting class architypes, fun combat, immersive world.  I simply think the devs dont know what to do with this game.  Instead of building on what makes it great, and adding meaningful content and endgame, they want afk to progress.

    Pearl Abyss in a nutshell.

Give this game to another developer and let them recreate it like what happened with FFXIV.

BDO could then become a real game worth playing.

Until then, it'll be a shining example of a game with amazing potential and developer incompetence.

In a nutshell, this.  The lack of any real content besides shitty laggy unbalanced fuck fuck games for PvP plus the AFK-heavy nature of the game make it an RMT paradise and a poor place for real mmo gamers to play.

Sounds like I dodged a bullet by never being interested in this game. Sorry to those that are/we're.

    I've got the straight edge.

Yeah, give it to a developer like ....Pearl Abyss ....from 2013.

Back before their only concern was monetization and Black Desert was an upcoming and promising sandbox MMO.

Game sounded so good when they were hyping it before launch.
