Well it's running on Unreal Engine 4, so my excitement has subsided a bit. I don't think any MMORPG dev has tamed that beast to run remotely decent with a bunch of players on the screen.
Outside of this, my sole problem with tab targeting is projectiles. I absolutely hate playing a game where a projectile is coming at me and I can't dodge it. It just doesn't resolve in my brain. I think it's quite ridiculous seeing a fireball curving stupidly to hit me.
I also don't like when I'm looking at something and attempting to melee it but the tab target is elsewhere so it doesn't register.
This is why I tend to lean towards MMORPGs that have methodical action combat and some rooted animations so there is risk vs reward during combat for everybody. If I make a mistake my opponents shouldn't have to be Daigo Umehara to punish my miss. On the flipside they shouldn't be able to hit me just because they just have tab target sitting on me.
TL;DR
UE4 doesn't belong in MMORPGs (right now)
&
Tab target doesn't belong anywhere close to action based combat. I think it's better suited for turn-based game play which is a different type of fun.
Connected to that, they are supposed to somehow move from 1v1s and couple other things shown so far to launching an UE4 MMORPG...next year??
They've already shown large scale PvP fights in their livestreams with butter-smooth frame rates. I believe Fevir even covered it.
Another in the plethora of games proving that designing a MMORPG around pvp just ruins any chance at better combat ideas.
Some reason a bunch of dopey developers around the world decided to change the definition of action to mean...somersaults/dodging.
Combat if done well is a helluva lot more than dodging and manual aim but yeah go for the pvp design ,we need more spammy combat.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
What struck me is they only show a few seconds of any specific engagement. It could be because they want more time to show the variety, but it also hides the hard part of combat design, which is how it plays out over a longer period of time. how combos come into play, how defensive tactics work, etc.. What we see now is just a collection of animations and some rather overdone (IMO) effects.
They just lost me! That combat looks appalling! Even the video made me feel dizzy and sick.
What happened to the idea of this game being a better version of ArcheAge? It looks nothing like ArcheAge, it looks more like Black Desert Online and I refuse to play that game because of it's dreadful action combat.
Ah well, I wish them well, but I'm not touching this game. Awful!
Do you guys all really feel dizzy? Because you could put a retirement home pop in the spinning wheels of death and get less vertigo related complaints.
I'm just sayin'

MMOs have never got passed the issue that they must look amazing, it has always been graphics before gameplay. Obviously an issue for wider gaming as well, but the 'massively multiplayer' turns that issue into a dilemma.
Now we have streaming, personally I think "gamers" are going to end up watching more games than they play, I only see the issue of graphics before gameplay getting worse.
So it looks pretty, that is a bar nearly every MMO can jump, but will the combat be satisfying, that is the real question?
This combat reminds me more of Neverwinter and less of ESO, I'm so glad they decided to do it this way.
EDIT: Come to think of it, it also looks kinda like the combat trailers we saw from EQNext (few in number), but that would come as no surprise with the staff involved.
only me seeing similarities with this combat style? (btw, I like it)
Yeah, it is similar combat to everquest next landmark but I don't like this type of combat. Only the graphic effect makes good looking combat but if you turn of the graphic it is similar to old school MMO combat.

I do get motion sickness easily though so that might explain it.

I have to admit, I thought the exact same thing watching it... Jesus I hope that is not the case - that it feels as disconnected as ESO combat.
