The genre is returning to its roots , and 1 because as you said All these Big MMos erhmm have faltered , the longevity of the genre lies in UO,EQ,Eve,Runescape, DAOC, Anarchy online, they are realizing that there is something to these games a deeper more immersive World , There are reasons these are longest running games while many newer games close up or barely hold on ..
Each of these examples delivers a rich Immersive persistent World ..
SOTA did not stick to the formula , there game is fragmented and attached to a P2W shop .. The examples above are cohesive worlds , where Combat/Crafting /Exploration and Lore all work together to deliver a much better World ...
There is a market for this type of game and its not just Nostalgia at all ..
Gran Skre is coming along nicely been having fun with that myself ..
All the games i listed above are better MMORPgs than anything else offered today , and ive played them all to end game .. But you know what im playing today .. UO and have been for 20 years , its still has more player activities and a more immersive persistent world than any of the modern games of the genre ..
Il include AC in that list as well altho it closed down this year , i believe with just 1 remastering it could have held on another 10 years .. RIP AC
There is some really good MMO minds behind the Indie games you have mentioned and steering the ship in the right direction ..
The Genre is returning to its roots , to creating worlds...
At this time, the genre is so crowded with games that it's not a hugely profitable prospect to make an MMORPG. The nature of the genre contributes, as MMORPGs are made to have gamers return to play consistently.
Our genre is one that's not necessarily better served with more and more games being released. It is to a point, but that point is much lower for MMORPGs than it is for, say, FPS multiplayer games.
Hive talks about looking for a game like..... with better graphics. Yes I will confess gladly to those sentiments. I have played on Project 99 and while I enjoyed my time there the server is crowded and some of the things I genuinely hated like the end game camping by large guilds depriving all others have always stuck in the craw.
I am looking for a reboot and I'm glad I might get it and I'm mightily happy to support the Indy games that might fulfil my fondest wishes. I don't expect it to draw hundreds of thousands but 100k is enough for me and I sincerely hope they can survive and I can find a home.
Here's to Pantheon succeeding.
A nostalgic return to the game play designs of the first era is about the only way I can see myself ever playing one again.
Besides, as I was totally focused on a small handful of titles, I never got to play many of the major games (UO, AC1, SWG, FFXI, SWG, EQ1 etc) during their "glory days" so if someone can recreate their magic in a new MMO I'll give it a try.

At least he's not the "angry" hive" or something like that.
Besides, he gets invited to early Pantheon playing sessions and his reviews aren't over the top sycophantic.
I hate watching people play or talk about games, but Hive's bearable....
Also he keeps it short, not many 3.5 hour gaming synopsis.....another plus.
