Guild Wars just needs to release 5 more expansions and it will completely take over the highest ranked MMORPGs.

Sorry I will never ever call GW a mmorpg, though one of the absolute best MMO's.

Is Guild Wars: factions a separate game than guild wars???  If not, why is it on it's own?  I don't see asheron's call and it's 3 expansions up there heheh.

You can compare those two with CoH and CoV, you don't need both to play the game, they are stand alone games.

Same reason you see CoH and CoV listed seperate. They are stand alone expansions. They add to the current version, but dont require it, they are a game in their own.

I disagree. GW Factions is an outstanding expansion/new game, especialy considering the amount of content you get for such a low price. I have yet to see any other game that is only $50 and that can keep people busy for years (like GW is doing)

For my humble opinion Guild Wars hardly ranks into MMORPG,  its more like CS since olny on the arenas you actualy see other ppl, besides your party, its just a lame excuse for a online game, that focus on finding the perfect talent combination, and be the first to shoot the other, showing little stategy, or even teamwork.

Factions is as much a stand alone game as the original. And so deserves the place it gets especialy as many people only have factions and not chapter 1.  And, while GW was good, Factions really is raising the bar.  Every area just keeps upping the quality of design and you can actualy see each user suggested thing in there, you may not like it, but damn arenanet listens to their customers well.

Yah... I agree that it's a pretty good game, but I don't know why people are calling it an MMORPG.

  • paulscottpaulscott Member Posts: 5,613

flames luso  and its inabilty to find/ cooperate/ with people and play non-lvl grind games.

but guild wars isn't precisely an MMORPG.  but its close enough to satisfy most people as it being one.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

    Looks like one to me.

I think people don't like to call it an mmorpg because there is no monthly fee.

  • SalvatorisSalvatoris Member Posts: 1,360
I think it has more to do with the fact that the entirety of the gameplay is instanced... there really isn't anything "massive" about the multiplayer aspect of the game.
  • TeeBeeNZTeeBeeNZ Member Posts: 259
The instanced thing over all doesnt change how I play it.  I mean in non instanced worlds it was a small group moving round doing their quests, but having to fight for spawns, having to try and wait for the group in front leave so we could get to the guy etc, GW just removes those problems keeping the same gameplay.

yeah im agreeing with Aseenus. guild wars will rule the MMORPGs

While I don't tend to call Guild Wars an MMORPG as it's billed as a CORPG it really is in the eye of the beholder:

MMORPG doesn't mean a game can't be instanced to hell and back.  It also doesn't mean the world has to be persistent.

    MMORPG:

    • Massive/Massively:  GuildWars has 1.5 million players playing on the same server, granted it is instanced but in the cities you can meet up with any player in the game.  Not true in most other MMORPG's asside from EVE.  So, yes, it is "massive".
    • Multiplayer:  More than 1 person playing at the same time:  Well million(s) are playing at the same time, not necessarily all in the same instance but they absolutely are all playing.  And in the cities you are still "playing".  Crafting, forming guilds, having meetings, roleplaying, forming groups, etc.  So in some portions of the game it's just like any other MMORPG.
    • Online:  Yep, it's played online.
    • Role Playing Game:  You create a character that isn't you, pick a role you want to play in a group and it's a Game.

So, technically speaking, Guild Wars *is* an MMORPG... just not a more traditional format for one.   You can consider it one or not consider it one but the bottom line is that it has every right to be on this site.

The only time I ignore GuildWars is if you are comparing "number of subscribers" because GuildWars doesn't *have* subscribers.  Anyone who's ever bought the game still has an active account because there's no monthly fee.  So Guildwars has NO "real" subscriber attrition like other MMORPG's do.  So a comparison of 'number of subscribers' is silly.

Now, the other question I saw come up is whether Factions deserves it's own entry in the game list.  Someone compared it to an expansion for a traditional MMORPG.

    Definition of a Game:

    • Can it be played on it's own *without* any other game:  Factions can.  Expansions for other MMORPG's cannot.  Thus factions is a stand-alone Game.  Thus it deserves it's own entry.  The fact that people who already have GuildWars can use their current characters in Factions if they want to doesn't detract from the fact that factions is a solid *sequel* to GuildWars.

While Factions does "expand" the original game if you have both it is perfectly acceptable to play factions without ever having bought or played the original game, "Prophecies".   It's fun to have both (I don't) but you don't NEED both.  So it's a completely stand alone game and should have it's own ratings.

Personally I think Guild Wars is one of the best MMO's on the net.  Sure it's not a traditional MMORPG but I like the way it's done.  Which is odd because I *thought* I would hate it until I actually tried it.  And the nicest thing is that since there's no monthly fee I can come and go in Guild Wars whenever I want without feeling like I'm wasting my monthly fee if I decide to take a month to do something else.  Guild Wars is always there :)

Guild Wars has also drastically altered what I look for in an MMORPG.  For an MMORPG to justify a monthly fee for me now it has to offer MORE to me than Guild Wars does.  A lot More.  Because now that there's a presence in the market that doesn't require me to pay a monthly fee I expect MORE if I'm going to pay one.

VERY few MMORPG's today can justify their Monthly fee for me now.

    • Guildwars has decent instanced PVP so PVP better not be instanced if you plan to charge me a monthly fee.
    • Guildwars has a beautiful instanced world to explore full of interesting places to see and creatures to discover.  So you better have an explorable world for me to see if you want a monthly fee (hint hint DDO).  You will also want to make sure it's NOT instanced.
    • GuildWars has a great guild and alliance system.  So you better at least be AS GOOD as their guild/alliance system if you plan to charge me a monthly fee.
    • GuildWars has phenomenal graphics:  The bar went up folks.... your graphics better be *solid* and deliver top notch performance too... if you want to charge me a monthly fee.
    • GuildWars sounds are top notch:  Better make sure your sounds are good folks.  If they aren't I won't be paying a monthly fee.

In short:  If you want to charge me a monthly fee to play your MMORPG you need to offer me *everything* Guild Wars does and *more*.   A few titles out there do... I play one of them still.  But some of the newer titles coming out have jumped on the instancing bandwagon.  And DDO, in particular, though it'd be neat to release 1/4 of an MMO and charge a monthly fee for it.  Tip to Turbine:  I already get plenty of instanced quests in GuildWars, thanks.  I'm not paying you $15 a month to do yours.

By this broad definition, wouldn't Battlefield 2 be considered an MMORPG?  Or how about Mechassault 2 for xbox?

Yep GW is fun and I enjoy it for about 30 minutes at a hit; but it is really stretching the meaning of Massive and Multiplayer to consider it a MMORPG. Massive= lots of people playing or lots of land to explore? Multiplayer= a group of 3-12 or 5,000 in the same world? I always understood Massive to be an adjective not a stand alone word. Massive is modifying Multiplayer. Dam I sound like an english teacher! I like Guild Wars but not because I like MMORPGs -if that makes sense ::::12::

well, it's a stand alone game. It's basically the same thing as Guild Wars but with extra features and new missions quests etc... Since you don't need the original game to play it it is not an "expansion" in the classical way.

my own point of view on this is that MMORPG.com should take it off the top rated MMORPG list but still give it its on reviews, overviews, rating etc...

depends, i don't see how you could fit 'online' and 'roleplaying' into those titles :D
also, even if it was a xbox live it still wouldnt be online since online could be described in a broad term as the Internet.

  • SalvatorisSalvatoris Member Posts: 1,360

Battlefield 2 tracks your stats and progresses your character rank with weapon unlocks based on experience. Servers hold considerably more people than a Guild Wars instance. Mechassault has a persistent map of worlds where opposing factions struggle for land control. To play on the xbox live service, you have to be "online" with an ISP.... You just connect to servers run by Microsoft instead of NCsoft.

I wouldn't try to seriously argue that either of these games are MMORPGs, just that a lot of different games would fit the classification of MMORPG as defined by the post I quoted.

Guildwars Factions is a tight game, and should be at the top.  Currently, it needs no more expansions.  Expansions are for games that aren't good enough to begin with.  Factions is a wonderful game, especially since you can play it as a standalone game or travel between Cantha and Tyria
