Richard Garriott no longer listed as CEO, is this a typo?

blorpykinsblorpykins Member RarePosts: 466
There's been no feedback from a mod or a dev on what might be going on.  If he's no longer the CEO, what would be the that mean for the game?  Without Lord British there is no Portalarium.

Maybe someone put him in a box, and now he won't speak to us as CEO?

Quite possible he is selling the company, wouldn't be the first time.

In space, no one can hear you being a CEO.

I look at him, Brad McQuad, John Smedly, Mark Jacobs, Starr Long et el.  Those guys that were at the beginning and made a game.  That was it.  A Game.  They got lucky with what they did.  That doesn't mean that they are amazing at doing it and by no means should they be given the reigns to another game just because.  MMO's are far from an exact science and to think that someone knows what they are doing just because they got lucky (and to be clear, the guys who did it first in MMO's (EQ, UI, DAoC) honestly got lucky, their games in all honesty weren't deep, amazing works of art, DAoC was a far better game than the other two, but still was only a 1 stick gimmick of a game.)  They were something extraordinarily new.  Something never seen before.  But they were still, honestly, not great games.  But now, these guys all live off their name and everyone flocks to them.  Look at Vangard, EQ2, SotA, or even that other failed game Garriott made.

The only reason CU, Pantheon might have a chance is that actual bright people are doing most of the running of things at these new games.  I'm not real excited about CU and Pantheon is dreaming big, but also is a very long way from release.  So we'll see.

I looked on the official forums, and apparently RG decided to change his title at the company to Creative Director.

Ultima Online was the best MMO i played but it died for me and all other hardcore PvP players february 2003 with Age of Shadows that made the game just another WoW game.

Richard Garriott responded on Twitter. I don't know what to make of this. It sort of explains why he's always been absent and the game is nothing like what it was Kickstarted to be, but it's still strange.  I don't understand how a company with investors and partnerships can just say the CEO position was a meaningless title after blowing through tens of millions in funding.

He just popped up in that other thread, again telling us how awesome SotA is, how "so many" people are playing it and all that usual crap - https://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/comment/7390791/#Comment_7390791

As we have adjusted our direction and team to focus on Episode 2 we have decided to eliminate any titles and positions with the word Officer, including my own which was CEO. This leaves me to focus on my true role as Creative Director while Chris Spears and Starr Long can focus on the running of the team.
