Richard Garriott's Official Shroud of the Avatar Description Eliminates 'CEO' Title

imageRichard Garriott's Official Shroud of the Avatar Description Eliminates 'CEO' Title - MMORPG.com

Richard Garriott's official profile on the Shroud of the Avatar site now omits the title CEO, something that has been part of the description since the game's pages were first published. SEC filings name Garriott as CEO, though Delaware, where the original corporation paperwork was filed, does require an executive officer,. though not specifically "CEO". At the moment, Garriott's profile only lists him as Creative Director and Founder.

UPDATED: Here is information we received from Portalarium:

  • Richard Garriott hasn't "resigned" his position, but the team has discarded all the "officer titles"
  • Primary roles are: Richard, Creative Director; Starr Long as Executive Producer; Chris Spears as Technical Director
  • The team is focused on Episode 2 and rolling out monthly updates

Garriott wrote last night: "As we have adjusted our direction and team to focus on Episode 2 we have decided to eliminate any titles and positions with the word Officer, including my own which was CEO. This leaves me to focus on my true role as Creative Director while Chris Spears and Starr Long can focus on the running of the team."

i was one of the original backers.. and i think this project was a fail ... too bad though i had tried to give it a chance a few times throughout the updates ... but its just a bad game anyway i look it at.

I wish them luck but I doubt they will ever deliver what they promised

The game has actually gotten quite solid. If you're calling it a turd or something at this point, and haven't played it in months or years, then you should go give it another shot.

There is a lot to be said for SotA, it delivers many things that MMO gamers want but don't exist in the rather stagnant industry. Instead of just bashing it without knowing, there's a free trial.

A word on playing it: Most MMO's have a structured, A - > B -> C game style. You do what they want you to and that is how it is decreed.

In Shroud, if you don't give a damn about playing story based stuff, just don't. Walk out of the first area and go be a crafter or a fisherman or a farmer. Play the game as you like.

That's what has kept so many of us here, it is an actual "Role Playing" game, but you can switch the role as you see fit. Never be stuck to one class again.

Again, there's a free trial, so no matter how many former (usually years ago) players are slamming it here, you can find out for yourself.

    So many of us? Really?
How much money did you get from your last begathon? 30K Including subs.
Show me the numbers so I can agree with you and that * so many of us * .
And LB is not CEO for a reason.. or why would you change your title you had for years and why Starr and the mighty Chris still have their title..

Actually, the fact that there are no directors (or if he is no longer a director) has legal implications in the event of a lawsuit and who can be sued. Interesting.

There was a COO but he quietly left last May I think it was.  I don't recall who the most recent CFO was but there's no longer mention of one on their team page.

I believe the story mentions legally he is still the principal officer,  every US corporation is required to have at least one.

    This change is mostly cosmetic.

I was a big backer for the longest time and was quite excited about it, but the game just sucked about as bad as you could possibly imagine. I liked NOTHING about it, including the crafting system and the horrible combat system. Fortunately, I was able to sell off my entire investment, so I dodged a big bullet.

Does the game have an improved combat system or does it still use "card combat"? That was one of the lamest ideas any game designer ever came up with. Do the crafting trees still require you to traverse trees that require you to invest in things you don't want in order to get to what you do want? That's a noob game design flaw that the better games avoid.

Is there still no global chat? I totally understand the appeal of eliminating the cesspool that global chats usually presage, but it leaves the game feeling empty everywhere, when you can't ask for help or ask questions about game features.

Also, does it still use the pay-to-buy-your-place-in-line for the landrush?  I paid a fckton of money for my house and deeds but wound up so far behind all the whales in the queue, I could never get any good land placement.

Seems like a lot needs fixing, but I'm interested in hearing your response to see if maybe they have addressed these issues.

    say what

So he couldn't focus properly with a different title...sad.Not sad  because he can't focus but sad that he thinks we buy into that BS.
So there is definitely a reason, perhaps something centered around non profit or has already been claiming non profit and is up to some kind of change.
Or something to do with insurance which could go in many directions, pretty much impossible to figure out what he is actually doing but he is up to something and imo something sketchy.

This guy is like Smedley, always looking for angles to make more money. So if i wrap my head around this trying to figure out what he is up to,i have perhaps another idea.

Well i look up and see a couple posts already like me,figuring something sketchy is going on.
So i am guessing that maybe it is all of the above, maybe he has some way to profit if this game goes under.
I think he has some new business venture/ideas.Remember the name Smedley that i just mentioned, well his idea was to get out of SOE and into an atmosphere  of mobile gaming. So maybe Lord British has some mobile gaming ideas now,an easier market and needs to change up how his business is run to fully profit from it.
My hunch, this is NO WAY,just a cosmetic move, there is absolutely  a real reason.

Sounds like just a cosmetic thing but kudos for ditching the "officer" bit. Always annoyed me when that was part of my job title. Makes sense in the armed forces and police but elsewhere it sounds goofy.

I used to be pretty proud of myself for finally making VP and officer after a long career struggle.

Events of the past year have greatly changed my career perspective and I am quite happy to introduce myself as a technologist and team member.

If they took the official title away I would not care, things are better this way.

SotA is not an MMO, in fact it isn't even a game but rather an alpha test duct-taped and prematurely launched for purely financial reasons; Not that I am saying that "magical market" exists, just clarifying the genre of "the game".

It's all exactly as you remember it. Just a bit of polish here and there, polish that absolutely does nothing to better the game too much in the long run.

Vlad will tell you that the people that bad mouth the game have not played in months/years, but that's his way of trying to invalidate those opinions. The truth is many of the people that hate this game do in fact spend time in the game in order to stay abreast of the changes.

I have over 100 hours into the game over the past 2 years since persistence. Most recently played a week ago. While the game has some charm, it is hampered by poor design, lack of population, bad combat, RMT severely impacts every inch of the game and the developers has stated so, Portalarium are greedy; profited off the death of Garriotts mother by selling an in game picture of her and donated a small portion of the sales to her favorite charity and pocketed the rest, because of RMT, you have to question the motives of every single person you meet in game and I have met some weird people, ban people at the drop of the hat for trying to suggest changes, many changes of which are now taking place since the game is tanking faster than the titanic and they need to try and make the game at least somewhat appealing, Port has openly wasted backer money with mismanagement, wasted time and money by implementing "placeholder" story in the game, though I believe it was an excuse when people started complaining about how bad the story was. They always have an excuse when they get caught.

Vlad has been banned from the MMORPG subreddit for his constant pro SotA posts. They couldn't believe that someone was that head over heels in love with the game as he purports to be without being heavily invested in RMT.

Anyone at all that has any interest in this game, do yourself a favor and try the free trial on their website before putting any money into it.
