Starport Galactic Empires

Well, I tried it out and came to some sad conclusions.

You can download and play the game for free, yes, BUT if you want any hope at all of competeing, you're spending money.  Big money, too, compared to a subscription game.  I'd estimate $20 to $40 to have a shot in an average two week game.

Helpful hint, seasoned players don't really start colonies.  They wait for other people to then take them, whereupon the original owner is faced with the need to spend even more money for movement points, game cash for weapons and ships etc.

Overall, I'm sorry to have to say I found the game a poor experience, for people with excess money to burn only.

Seriously. Ask any, I mean any seasoned player. You don't need Tokens to win a rebang. You don't need tokens to win a perma game. You don't need tokens at all. All you need it the will to survive, grid and determination.

And some basic intelligence (no burn towards you, seriously ) which is often lacking.

With all due respect MadAce, that sounds like the old saying 'anybody can grow up to be president.  If you'd like to share your secrets on how to compete against unlimited movment, unlimited resources/game cash and unlimited weapons without matching it, I will humbly be your pupil.

I compete fine, and I've never bought any tokens (unfortunately).  100% free

Tokens can give an advantage, a pretty hefty one too if enough RL cash is spent.  If somebody beats you because of that, then you should be happy to come second.  They're paying for your game.
Not happy with that?  Try a subscriber game (colooured green on the server list).  Cost is $5 a pop, and there's no Admiral's club and therefore no advantages from further donations.

I tried a beginner galaxy and had a lot of fun.

The first two days I just made some nonsense because I knew nothing about the game. Then for a weekend I did nothing at all. After that I played casually for another two weeks and ended up being rank 23 out of 200. For me as a casual beginner player this was an extremly satisfying experience.

OK, you could argue that I was playing a nOOb galaxy. That's right. We're both new to the game.

So I had fun with a game for something like 3 weeks and yet paid no money.

    No warranty.

Don't put yourself down. A noob galaxy is hard too.
And 23 is really fine, better than my first time. I might add to my defence that the gameplay and the support has improved seriously over the past two years. In my days it used to be a lot harder to start out.
Maybe you should try a perma game, less pressure. But maybe harder since there is a lot of established territory, tho I'm sure you could build an empire.

    To answer the money-paying question:

BS. In all great wars in Starport (that's many) and in most of the little ones (that's extremely much) tokens have been used.

But if you're in a corp (like a guild) there's bound to be one person willing to give some tokens to his/her corpmates. And you can still buy tokens with ingame money, which is done at very fair rates.

Fuel management is just a part of the game and with some practice you'll use very little tho still be able to compete. In the previously mentioned wars I'm sure many, many corps fought without tokens. Usually wars are fought over a small section of space and just like in real life you'd need to plan ahead about gasoline (warp fuel in SGE) to be ble to make strikes deep into the enemy territory.

So it adds realism, and really... You don't really think about it. It just bcomes a habbit to make the most out of it.

Says he who just outbid me to 50 mill per 1k of tokens

heh, you can also sell planets or deaths for tokens, people sometimes like exp, so they will buy for that, or they may want certain rep, so they will buy if you are highly negative or positive rep, the latter is usually rarer, if you have high rep (me....) you are more likely to get an exp death, but people should be careful when doing these, heh, MadAce knows something about deception XD

Fuel management is one of the most important skills one must have in this game, as fuel is THE most important commodity, time being second, one must use it wisely

And don't forget to plan for trips to sol when your corpmates decide to off you while you go afk someplace they can splash damage you ^.^

Furiae, Noob with exp  ; )

I'd like to say that most people who start playing this game think it's impossible to win, without tokens which is hardly true.
Firts of all 90% of all the people that play rebang games (winable games that last 14-18 days) don't pay for tokens simply because it ain't worth it. The minimum amount you have to buy is 10k tokens (= 10 us $) and who is gonna pay 10 $ for a 2 week game? You won't even get the chance to use that many tokens in the first place.
Other than that, one can easily win without paying tokens, I personally have even been able to beat people using tokens in a perfectly honest way.

Also, you can always take colonies that were stolen back, which requires extreemly little work, of course if you don't try you won't get too far, but I think that applies to every game.

    No pain no gain, right?

I'd like to say to all people who are looking for a free, relaxed game that doesn't soke up 10H of your time every day in order to be any good come to Starport and play the game, give it a chance really, play 3-4 servers for 1 or 2 weeks nad you'll be able to get a good impression of what it's like.

Cheers and respect people, see you in SGE soon, hopefully :P.
