im playing SB, and rumors say its closing down so i was thinking of buying a new mmorpg to play, and my friend recomended FFIX. is it a fun game, is it like SB or something? i need conformation before it buy it.
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10 usually added for the most part. if there's a lower number behind a higher, you subtract it. Easy as pie. It's a good game but just check out the reviews. You have to put forth the effort so some prefer just to have instant gratification with other MMO's
I played it for a few days.... Thats about as long as i could. The control's suck. the fighting sucks. There are so many more thingz that suck about this game. the only way i can see why people like it is because you can make complex macro's. I wouldnt tell anyone i know to even look at this game
I have only played the PC version so I cannot comment on the PS2 build.
I feel this is the best MMO game out there, always somthing to do no matter what level..
Yes the controls suck but once you get used to them they are no issue.
Even when you max your level there are still epic bosses (gods) to fight with massive groups which can one hit kill or you can chage your jobs and level different classes or do some crafting..
Crafting is not a get rich quick fix, you need to invest alot and you will lose a large sum of Gil but in time it pais for itsself.
But beware if you like to solo alot this game is not for you. After about lvl 10 you need to start grouping. This can be a real pain waiting around with LFG flag doing nothing waiting for invites. So make sure you have your PSP or what ever else you may have at hand to entertain yourself while you wait.
The comminity was generally pretty good on my server..which brings another game function to mind
You cannot select your server, it its randomly chosen for you. You can however ger a friend who is playing to get you a 'Worldpass' which is a serial code you can input on character creation to join the same server.
All in all FFXI is an awesome game but I promose you and other will too.. You will only get out what you put into it. I quit just before christmas after comeing in and out of it. I may come back soon I dont know why but I really miss it.
Gamespot recently reviewed the xbox360 version of the game, and as I look back on the game (I used to play the pc ver) there was something in that review that mirrored my sentiments on FFXI.
The reviewer was bascially getting at this : FFXI has MASSES of content to enjoy, but hasn't attempted to evolve over the years, leaving newcomers in the dust.
Thats basically how I feel about the game too.
No-one wants to endure 2-3 months of hard 'work' before they are able to get to the good bits. There's simply nothing to ease new players into the game, and tbh honest, there never was. Only now, 4 years later, the situation must be much worse, with complaints of the recent expansions focusing too much on high-end content.
The gameplay I'm sure is still fun on some levels, its just the way it's forced down the player's throats feels archaic; a bit like what Blizzard are attempting with WoW's end game, now.
At least with WoW it doesn't take weeks and weeks to get to enjoy the 'good bits'.
So to sum it up in a few words: FFXI felt too much like an unpaid job in 2002, there's no way I'd want another crack at it in 2006. Definately TOO MUCH of an EQ clone. Hell, even Lineage II has tried harder to accommodate new players.
The cats in the bag.....(....and the bag's in the river....)
Yes, it is a good game - and no it isn't. The game really shines in some areas and just isn't redeeming at all in others. What makes MMORPGs interesting is the "spin" factor. So it depends on you as a person one person's "grind" is another's "challenge" or "long term value", so on. I would say this game is fun in that it stresses social-ness and is pretty solid all around (i.e. Mediocre Crafting, nice interface, borderline stupid PvP, nice visuals, fun and unique character classes, lots of strategy for each battle, diffrent play styles with subjob).
I cancelled my account however simply because grouping can become an issue as well as money. When it comes down to it I simply don't have the time to make it anywhere in this game.
I think the combat is fun. You who say it isn't, i assume haven't tried your hand at skill chains and magic bursts. I'm just experiencing them for myself, and it is fun. I played wow, eq, eqoa, guild wars (worst one yet, bored me to no end) and many others, while some of them were good, and a good number of them really really bad, none of them have captured me like FFXI has. I think it's important to try and make players be social, community is very important in mmorpgs. Without it, they'd just be RPG's that other ppl are playing at the same time....boring.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The pen is mightier than the sword, and authority is mightier than the pen, but the sword is mightier than authority.
If you can't beat 'em, hold 'em off 'till you come up with a better plan.
I played FFXI for 2 years, and it took a long time to get to the point where i am now. I started on the PC version, and the controls totally annoyed the hell out of me. I later moved to the PS2 when my computer bit the dust. I must say using a controller in this game makes it more enjoyable as far as gameplay is considered. Over all the economy is very hard on new players. When i started playing things where alot cheaper. Overtime the market inflated prices went up along with the amount of gilfarmers. This really hurts new players, and i think its a major set back with incouraging new players to keep playing. Total grind fest to get good equipment for a new player, i'm talking months and months of farming to get the gear you want. This game is very item orintanted, if you don't have the right gear your gonna suck. Most of the expensive/good items dropped from mobs are constantly camped by gilfarmers on my server, often botted. If not botted these gilfarmers are pros, and very good at getting the mob "claim" making even harder to get the item your trying to get, making it more fustraiting to the new player who can't just go out and buy the item they want. These items are usally overpriced by crafters and should be. They monies out there just not in the hands of new players.
The end game in FFXI imo is the best out there, it just takes a really long time to get there. If you can get into it and get past the grind of the game it is very fun fighting HNMs,Wyrms, Gods, Giant Turtles along with doing missions, ( the last fight in COP is amazing ). I quit in Febuary due to the lack of intrest my friends showed in doing these things. My suggestion is find friends that have the same goals as you. Do some research about the game and go from there. If you willing to grind it is well worth it in the end. IMOH FFXI is a great game, one of the best PVE out there. I've played EQ,EQ2,L2,WOW, SB and DAOC. I most say i enjoyed the first year of this game, and probably would've enjoyed it alot more if i could've found the right community. Unfortuantly i didn't and it made the game unbearable
I've been playing FFXI for about 3 months now(The Xbox360 version), and I love every minute of it. The community is great, they're always having special events and give away items. The party system works preaty good as long as there's a good veriety of player classes online around your level. There's an endless supply of monsters and bosses to fight, and, with the new expantion, there's like 80 missions and hundreds of quest to do. The game also has it's own auction and crafting dynamics that allow you to find and creat items, as well as, buy and sell them at the auction house. Not to mention the great communication setup. At $50 plus $13/mon I think it's the best value in gaming today. Hope that helps.

What is lame about the combat system? Could we be a bit more specific plz? And is it that big a difference playing the pc version? I might try it but it seems most support is for the xbox thingie.
Originally posted by christianc87 well i watched my friend play it, and i have to say, the fighting is kinda lame, but its a fun looking game overall
An interesting combat system, FFXI Skill chain / Magic burst system is the best on the market. Real time, when I swing my weapon, it actually hits something and that something actually bleeds (unlike WoW with that fade away swing motion lol). You have to really know what your doing, Weapon skills chain, to know what element to burst. EQ2 stole this and made this bogus heroic combat system, a complete joke where icons flash AND TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT TO DO. lol
A hard game, a game that requires you to think (IE skill chain system) and to really know wtf your going. A game that can take up to 6 months - a year to get to cap and that is fun along the way.
FFXI has so much more PVE content then anything out atm. Unlike wow, were you just do 4 dungeons until you eyes bleed.
FFXI THE ONLY MMORPG THAT HAS A PLOT, A FUKN STORY LINE.
I am just so tired of hearing people bitch and complain about "oh man, the grind is to hard" go play WoW, I mean get to cap in 20 days lol. Guess what, what you do in wow doesnt matter. No one knows you... its like you exist not to. In FFXI everything I do means something.
So, do you want to play a game (WoW) that no matter what you do, you will always be BBQ-KIDA or do you want to be a real man, and play a real mans RPG (FFXI).
If you love EQ, you’ll love FFXI. Plain and simple.
CONS:
Yeah im not a fan boy, there are cons.
1) Class balance issues, frankly to many underpowered classes, as a DRK who had to play before sushi and had to keep up with a ranger to do a SC... It was brutal. Right now, Mages rule this game. If you want to be a caster, you’ll be at home.
2) Economy, frankly aside for EvE and WoW every economy is messed up, sure everything is 10x more expensive and sure all the good stuff I use to farm, you can’t farm no more. So what that means is unless you buy $ you will be restricted to certain jobs. Jobs like RNG, NIN, DRK (which take it from me is gear dependant), and WAR
3) not even a con, people by nature are lazy and tend to xp of the same crap. Even tho there are tons of camp sites and very unique mobs, those lazy sobs just goto the same turtle , same mob and then bitch and moan on a forum
I played FFXI for over 2 years and im lvl75, i played WoW for 5 months, got to 60 with full tier 2.
Final Fantasy XI is not the worst MMORPG on the market, but it definitly is the most boring one. its mayor downfall is the forced grouping. when you start, you will solo the first 10 lvl's, but from there, you will have to group and that is where the game gets boring. for everything you want to do, be its a simple quest, a mission or just grinding, you will have to wait a few hours to get a group together. expect an avarage wait time of 2~3 hours before you will do anything in the game. the combat is slow and boring, the graphics are outdated and the races are imbalanced. not in a way one race is stronger then the other, but a HUME warrior will NEVER be as strong as a galka warrior. elvaan black mage will never be as strong as one of the little guys. so the game already picked the race for you. also, you will be charged a monthly fee, which is normal. the thing is, you can only have ONE character. if you want another one, you will be billed an EXTRA 1$ a month, which is absolutely rediculous. Many say the community in FFXI is horrible, I found so the other way. both times I created a character, there was always some person who would offer help and advice. Final Fantasy XI is a fun game if you have a couple of friends who play a lot with you, if you don't, stay away from this game.
p.s. to the poster above me, If you think an mmorpg makes you a real man, then I serious advice you get yourself checked
Originally posted by christianc87 im playing SB, and rumors say its closing down so i was thinking of buying a new mmorpg to play, and my friend recomended FFIX. is it a fun game, is it like SB or something? i need conformation before it buy it.
Ok, I thought FFXI had a good concept, even a great concept. I admit, it takes ages to level up your character...Overall it would probably be worth it, except for a few key factors.
1) I can't speak for other servers, but all the servers I have ever been in have been inflated, it is a job, a pain, and an utter struggle to get the next level of weapon or the next set of armor. I mean, you know theres a problem when you are actually dreading leveling up, because I was a warrior, and I knew when I leveled up people would expect me to have the new set of armor/weapon. And, I didn't have it and I couldn't afford it. It is that bad.
2) Money is just plain hard to come by.
3) #2 would be understandable, because normally you just have to farm untill you get money, but it's not so easy in this game. You see, you can't make any money in groups realy because the basic monsters drop crap. What you have to do is hunt notorious monsters, but the problem is everyone else in the world is thinking the same thing, so like 10-20 people are going after the same mob and about 5 of them have bots and theres no way you can get the monster. Also, if you do theres only a small chance its going to drop something worth anything.
For a redeeming factor, however...You do get to fight a dragon before your level 60, lol...I fought my first dragon at like 20, so...that was cool. Also, the job system is great, you will definitly find something to enjoy in at least 2 or 3 of the jobs available and you can switch in town at any time. If only you could actually get the equipment for the characters I'd say this game would be one of the best. I love final fantasy; the concept as I said is great, but I think the community more often then not can kill your experience... So I realy Hope that helped, If you can find a good linkshell and some high level friends that can help you out with money, go for it; you'll love the game.

Not really, FFIX tried to recapture the old style but ultimately failed. But if you mean FFXI then that's an entirely different story.
