I have complaints about Cryptic Studios & Perfect World Entertainment for the way they operate Star Trek Online & I have only tried Champions Online a couple of times, but this is a nice small tribute to the great Stan Lee by the companies for the players. RIP

I never know if tributes like this are genuine or if they are just trying to promote their game... any game that does this kind of thing, not CO specifically.

    It's both.

If this were not a supers game I would say it was marketing, as it is I would say it is genuine.

It's more than just being a supes game, originally CO was planned as a Marvel game... When Cryptic left CoH they've worked together with Marvel on it for quite a while during the development phase.
The Champions IP was only acquired after Marvel backed out of the project and Cryptic needed something to launch the game with.

(also Champions itself is closer to Marvel than DC, in the sense of it has more "Marvel-spoof" characters   )

But even more important is that most likely Champions wouldn't even exist without the popularity boost of supes comics in the Silver Age, in which Stan Lee had a huge role.

It’s also good to remember they only put notice on the forums - no press release, marketing push, etc. Just a sincere note on the forums, and the equivalent of a black armband for their players.

Whatever the motive, it's a nice thing to do. Good way to remember him, all they need now is an 'Excelsior!!!' emote. :-)

Other companies might have charged for them...

I can confirm it's not a reskin of the Glasses Aviator model. The frame is different, right down to the temple tips. It's a nice and quick tribute. Thanks CO.

    Onwards and upwards Stan. Excelsior!

If I had not read this then I would not have even thought about it. The glasses were just part of who Stan Lee was too me. From being a little kid and reading comics with his drawn face there till I actually saw him and beyond. 'Nuff said.
