I have been playing AO for 4 years ( i did take about a 1 year break) and still love it. I have no problem whatsoever with the graphics, it's the lag that really brings the game down a bit.

And please don't judge the game until you have tried it with a paid account.

I have been playing for about 3 months now as a froob and the thing I like about it is your forever learning new things, Its a challange to the mind instead of the fingers hitting fire buttons a hundred miles an hour. I am just starting a 2nd character and will prob start paying and playing the expansions in the next few months.,...This is not a game to be rushed because you can miss out on a lot.
I played the free 14 day trial of shadowlands and was amazed at the huge amount of extra content I will have available when I upgrade from being a froob :)

Maybe its because ive been playing it for 3years, or that you come from some easy mmo, but to me its just hitting the special button and always raising the same skills on every char except a few difference in weapons here and there. You might call it depth, but at some point youll realize its easy, just bad tutorials and explanations have you figure everything out by yourself.... lucky the people are helpful there.

90% of the people use the same cookie cutter setup and that especially apply to pvp where evades and AS > everything, not to mention the serious lack of people to fight. AO is just a massive grind with an occasional content patch every 4-6 months, and is a waste of time.

    Nice community tho.

About the graphics, about the only thing thats improved is the textures, the colors just have a more alive feel, check the ground texture and you get the idea what you will get, unless the engine is upgraded, the bad graphics and lag in this game are here to stay.

Er.. I played AO for almost 5 years. I got into it around when it was about to be released. The graphics back then were not that great. They improved over time and they have improved even more so now then ever. With the newly updated graphics from the new designer or w/e. I don't play it now anymore though cause it destroyed what little life I had, but all games can do that if you play them 15 hours a day. If you're looking for amazing xbox or ps3 graphics your not going to find them on an MMORPG for quite some time yet. Few more years and you'll have what you wanted. But, for now i suggest this game above all others. I play WoW at the moment and the game has it's ups and downs. But AO was all ups for me. Fun Factor was through the roof and the community was just truly something. (Until they made the free account thing) I must have had over 200 friends in that game out of the thousands that play it. I don't think any other game I played was as friendly as this game was to me. People help you out when you don't even ask for help. (most of the time anyway) And there is just so much to do you can never say you're bored. You can fly around on yalms and run faster then a speeding bullet! you can also run slower then a snail... But, seriously. This game definently has the best community and fun factor. and that's what makes games fun. Not the graphics. I mean look at Runescape. I bet millions play that game and it's because of the fun factor. (can't say the same for the community) Fun and/or community is what makes games good, not graphics. and don't you forget it!

You are what is called a "shallow gamer".   Yes it's a new term, so considder yourself the shallowest to date.

AO is a pretty good game but imo, not worth a monthly fee.  And before I get jumped YES I have played Shadowlands in the past.

Then again very few MMORPG's on the market would I consider 'worth' a monthly fee any longer.  Specifically because I can get as good (and in some cases better) MMORPG gameplay from the free version of AO and/or Guild Wars and/or Planetside.  With those three games, not to mention Shadowbane, either having no monthly fee or having 'reduced' versions with no monthly fee my expectations for PAID MMORPG's has gone way up.

if AO got a graphics overhaul it would easily be the best mmo, it is by far the best mmo i've played.

I wouldn't go that far.  If it got a huge graphics ENGINE overhaul it'd be competitive.  But not the best.  Even when it was 'cutting edge' the game didn't do well.

It's complicated only to people with absolutely no capacity to understand anything other than hack/slash/repeat This game has more depth and customizability than any other on the market. Missions/quest/tradeskilling/rp/pvp/MASSIVE world/great community/ and more items/armor/clothes etc.than any other game. And for those bashing the free game and saying it's not worth paying for? Then quite frankly, you have no business there anyway for the free trial is to get people to subscribe. If you are playing just because its free and dont think it's worth any more than that, do us all a favor and leave. You are not wanted. I have met alot of nice people through the course of the free trial but, truthfully, I'll be glad when the begiing of the year comes and it goes back to subscribers only. A two week trial is more than enough for a serious player to know if they want to subscribe or not. End of rant.

Actually the Froob program generates money through advertising. Your doing a disservice to the game you love by telling people to leave who don't feel the game is worth paying for. Froobs get 1 year free, enough time to learn the game, get attached to thier characters, and finally make a decision on if they feel it would be worth paying for. Less than $100 a year is probably the lowest price your going to find for an MMORPG, excepting the free ones.

To be fair its not the environment graphics its the avatar graphics. They just plain suck. They just look stupid. And zooming, turning around just seems shit in total. I love this game, http://www.legendofmir.net/extra/screen/screen.jpg, and look at them graphics, so graphics dont mean alot to me. THey must be playable but, I find AO avatar graphics unplayable.

You are right, malcorez. I must have been especially grumpy that day. I just get so tired of the "It's too complicated!" comments. People who actually believe this are the reason the mmo realm is inundated with WoW clones and asian grindfest. I apologize to the froobs also, most that I have met ingame in general have been polite and truly are interested in the game. And if you are reading this liamwba, I apologize for being harsh, but please if you are going to say a game should not be paid for because it is too complicated, at least give a few reasons why you think it is so. Alot of the casual gamers can be turned away from a great game because of comments like that, when in fact although it does have a rather steep learning curve, the communiy is more than willing to help a newbie out and get them going. The game is a great blend of RP/casual/pvp/hardcore content. There is something for everyone in AO. The game has gotten dated as far as graphics and has it's share of problems just like any other mmo. But all in all, I think it is one of the best out there right now and I would love for more people to come try the game with an honetly open mind and they may just find what they have been looking for. Anyway, whatever game you play really doesn't matter as long as you enjoy it. Happy gaming, everyone!

I tried AO 3 times before I finally got to grips with it and im so glad I did. Nothing compares to it, nothing. The graphics although dated now are still absolutely fine. Compared to maybe a year ago the graphics are better. They have improved the ground textures etc and given the likes of Old Athen a makeover too.

I payed for AO for my 2 accounts for probably 4+ years now, but havent logged in more then twice the last year (in a desperate search for FUN gaming ). It still is a great game, and if it didnt lag i would start playing again.

Anyhow, could anyone enlighten me if theres any (official) planning on upgrading the graphics engine at all? all ivé heard is rumors so far.

  • Phoenix_HawkPhoenix_Hawk Member UncommonPosts: 298

There will be and has been improvements to the client and servers (a recent down time was to get some new servers and such put in) but no new engine.

    Below is from http://www.anarchy-online.com/content/game/losteden/features/faq2.html

    Graphics and Performance
    Q
I've heard rumors that with this expansion, that Anarchy On line will be getting the brand new Age of Conan engine to improve graphics, make for smoother game play and give the development team an easier time tweaking and fixing the game. Is this true?
    A
No, there wont be a graphics engine upgrade with this expansion. It actually would be far from ‘easier’ and would raise the minimum specifications too much for us to consider using the engine that we are using for Age of Conan. We will though be improving the current engine in terms of performance, which leads us nicely to the next question!
    Q
How is the servers going to handle the new load of textures. Because as it is today 40+ people is enough to cause serious lag at a tower war. I can only imagine how it would be with mechs added to it, and of course also an increase of players attending to the tower wars.
    A
We will be installing new hardware into the live dimensions to ensure that the servers can handle the extra activity. We are also improving the way in which the client handles resource loading that should lead to significantly better graphical performance as well. All players will benefit from that update and it isn’t tied to the expansion.
