just booted up the 'ol Skyrim vr and damn that shizzle is so fine. no joke still the best VR game out there. i hadn't played it in like over a year for some reason, and had forgotten how incredible that game, and especially that game in VR, is. just walking around Skyrim collecting herbs and smashing heads. getting attitude from NPCs and shotting arrows into knees.......which brings me the simple question. how come VR hasn't taken off yet? is it price? is it the hardware barrier? are millennials still so gastro-sensitive about it? i mean, it's friken virtual reality  at our fingertips! it's as sci-fi as spaceship travel....or just about anyways. what gives?

I have the rift, vive, and psvr.  Haven't used them in over a year. :(  I feel bad about it.  But since we moved, I haven't had the motivation to set them up again.  Yes, I love the whole VR thing.  Just needs higher resolution and it would visually be perfect IMO.

The problem I think for a lot of people is the controls.  It took a while for the gaming industry to standardize things like WASD and mouse for FPS's (I remember playing Duke nukem with arrow keys and no mouse).  3D action games were awkward on the original PlayStation with the control pad controls, but with the N64 game us Mario 64 with it's 1 analog stick, the industry began to see how it could work for all the 3D games.  Then we now have 2 analog sticks on all controllers, along with triggers.

The VR industry needs something to come along and totally nail it.  Right now, the motion controls end up with next to zero feedback, which makes it more akin to playing a mobile game on a touchpad.

I mean, how am I supposed to hit this thing with my sword, when my hand just flows straight through it, no resistance.  No weight of the weapons in my hands.  I can pick something up but I can't "feel" it.

The VR shooter games are a bit easier to "believe" since you are firing a gun of sorts, and the controller in your hand vibrates a little.  To me, these are the best due to this aspect.

Now for my little Sci-Fi idea....lol  I think a full arm glove should be made.  Each finger and wrist has little cables on it with tiny motors that quickly react to whatever is necessary.  It has enough torque to give your fingers and hands resistance enough to be believable.  Heck, make it stretch all the way across your back so that when you HIT something in the game with your VR sword, the motors pull your arms just enough to simulate a solid object was impacted.

Obviously that would be cumbersome, and probably next to impossible to create/implement.  But that's my theory on why VR hasn't skyrocketed.

Well for me I get severe motion sickness with VR. I can't even watch it on youtube, it makes me feel sick just watching it.

Likewise the same thing happens in AC Odyssey on the ships with the bobbing of waves and movement of the ship. That and I have a bit of a fear of the ocean which doesn't help.

Both which actually make my anxiety also super bad when it happens. Even watching a VR youtube video makes my anxiety bad as well.

Oculus Go has me for the first time really interested in VR.

It will become more popular in the future.

In the future humans will be like Deus Ex, and you can enter VR from anywhere.

Yeah, I have a motion sickness problem as well. I can deal with it for short bursts but if I stand up it's an issue.

So, for Skyrim I sit in a chair but raised the camera so it's a bit higher and I feel a bit more in line with the correct height. I sort of feel like Professor X rolling around in the dungeons.

Honestly, for me the chords, chords everywhere! and I have to plan ahead and take my motion sickness pills ahead of time. then there is the fact I wear glasses and the VR goggles are not exactly comfortable for us four eyed folks.

It is expensive as hell for the average consumer. Most people are not willing to spend nearly the kind of money required to play VR titles. Not only that, but there aren't any good VR games yet really. Nothing exclusive, anyways. VR will be good when they get a big title as monumental as RDR 2, The Witcher 3, God of War,ect on it and only available on it. It also takes lots of space depending on your setup, so places like China where there are much smaller houses and apartments are pretty much dead markets for VR.

No it is not virtual reality,it might carry the tag but it is not.
Then even if it were,we need the game developers to actually make a decent game worthy of being a VR game and not just light shows and cheap space fighters.

The closet we have come to VR is Nintendo Wii and their sports games. When we can simulate real life movements in game that mimic every move we make and we get a game that utilizes our movements in a really good way, then great,we will start to make AAA VR games. The amount of money it will take to produce a good quality VR game would be too high at this point in time and maybe only gets less likely over time.

I've gotten a headset for the cell.  It's interesting for about an hour.  That and watching 360 stuff on YT.

the technology still has not got to the place were it needs to be to be main stream. while it is still a decent experience is not the full Emerson most people wish for and it has a long way to go to get there yet. does not help that there is so few good titles for vr users either.

Nintendo 64 graphics were amazing back in the day. But in 2018 and having to spend $1500+ dollars for a DECENT setup just to look at horrific graphics and gameplay at 30fps? I don't fucking think so

I do think controls are definitely one of the biggest issues still.  Particularly, there's still the issue of base movement.  I mean, it would be great to teleport all over the place IRL, but in a game it kind of blows.  Too many VR games have gone that route(for legitimate reasons, admittedly).

As for you "Sci-Fi idea"... these things are already being developed.  Do some searches for "haptics" or "haptic feedback".
There's quite a few being designed/tested.  They've even had some non-hand related ones.  I know there was even a vest at one point.  I think there was actually a full body suit, but it got cancelled, iirc.
The problem with this stuff, as with most of this tech, is that it will probably be cost-limited when it actually launches.
There's also quite a few videos of people testing these out and giving details/critiques/feedback and whatnot.

Motion sickness for me. I get bad motion sickness. I can do things I just need to be drugged up. I don't feel like take medicine everytime I want to play video games.
I wonder if VR motion sickness would be akin to sailors "getting their sea legs"?  As in, wouldn't people sort of adjust and adapt to these things over time?
I wonder if those little acupressure sea-sickness wristbands actually work.  They get good reviews.  I don't have motion-sickness, so I couldn't say

I had a Rift for a week, it's just not good enough to justify the price tag imo.
The screen resolution is just too low, very blurry and i had the headset on correctly and my eyes are good so that's not it.

    Many reason:
    1) Still too expansive.
    2) Too bulky
    3) Too few games

In 10 years time most games will be VR, just give it time.

if you do "real" movement in VR, at least 80% of the people will get a headache or puke

There are still some glitches and a lack of quality titles.  However, I know a few people who took the plunge and have had motion issues which made them nauseous and or sick.  No one wants to deal with anything on that magnitude.  For the people I know who have them, this is response I am getting.  Right now poor word of mouth doesn't help either.

I get sick from first person view not about to waste my money on this which points to far worse motion sickness.

    It is awesome.

I love my Gear VR, and will likely be upgrading to an Oculus Quest after it hits.

My phone, amazing as it is, has slowed down somewhat over the years (I use a Galaxy S6).  Ever experience juddering lag in VR?  It's like a bad trip.

The Bluetooth controls leave much to be desired, in a medium that is highly sensitive to precision.  There just seems to be a real gap in the market for a quality Bluetooth gamepad, and I've searched far and wide.  The best I've found is my Gamesir G4s, and it's... inaccurate.

Despite all this VR is incredible.  Undoubtedly the most exciting media technology of the 21st century so far.  Here are my initial impressions after first trying it a couple years ago:

    1. Buy a $1500 VR setup
    2. Invite some friends for a night of drinks and VR roller coasters
    3. Put it away and never use it again

That's literally all it's good for right now. We're just not there yet.

why not? price is one, not really VR, when vr get around like SAO, or like in star trek with that hologram thing, I doubt it will not be popular
