I do believe we are living in the golden age of gaming.  My biggest problem is not enough time to play the games I want!
You are definitely not. That time came and passed. You are living is the cookie cutter age of gaming.

Who is claiming that video games are the worst they've ever been?

Hell, I think that unless you favor one of the currently struggling genres (like western MMORPGs), gaming is the best it's ever been. We've gotten so many landmark games this generation (like the Witcher 3, Persona 5, NieR Automata, God of War 2018, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Divinity Original Sin, Divinity Original Sin 2, Spiderman 2018, Monster Hunter World, Red Dead Redemption 2, and many, many more) that a game could be one of the best games ever made and STILL not be the game of the year.

We are currently experiencing the best gaming has ever had to offer. The highs are the highest they've ever been. It's just that because of certain corporate bootlickers, the lows are also among the lowest they've ever been, as those corporations that aren't interested in producing quality games like the above find new and fascinating innovations in taking the piss.

Yeah, I have a crazy long backlog of games I've bought and haven't gotten to yet.

If nothing else the gaming industry has learned that a gamer and his wallet are easily parted.

The new generation of kids is just unreal.
We get in the company truck and the younger kids faces are literally buried in their cell phones, you can talk to them but they don't hear you.
We are creating mindless zombies addicted to technology, well not even good high end technology, the simple little phones made for talking to someone important.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

consoles are definitely doing great. god of war, spider-man, horizon, rdr2 are all console games and have been some of the top selling. not to mention the impact the Switch has had and its games as well. dont get me wrong, i like PC, but consoles are clearly moving past PC. great time to be a gamer for sure.

But but the genre is dying, video games have never been in a worse spot!

True enough. If you look at the list of games quoted as having the most positive impact on earnings, they are: "Candy Crush Saga, Fortnite, Madden NFL 19, Marvel's Spider-Man and NBA 2K19".

I'd bet that Fortnite made the most money, but I may be wrong (I mean, Candy Crush Saga). Then there are two sports games, repeats in an endless series, and one "real" game, Marvel's Spider-Man (a PS4 exclusive, which in my book isn't that good either).

Granted, there are a lot of other games which made quite a bit of money, but still, when you consider that most money made in video games is from meaningless in game purchases, and that the most successful games don't have a shred of artistic merit, that says to me that having people spend more money doesn't indicate the health of the market.

I would argue the opposite, that things are looking great for PC gaming. If it wasn't for Sony's arrogance, pretty much all titles would be playable on PC. As things are right now, PC gamers get all Xbox ecosystem games, any PC exclusive titles and the majority of the Playstation ecosystem available to them.

I was going to comment about mobile - followed by console.
Along with the missing word: Estimated.
You are i think forgetting that its for NA, mobile likely amounts to 20% at best. :/

I guess gamers didn't spend much of that at Gamestop.  It lost 486+ million in Q3.  Will interesting to see what happens over the next year in the gaming industry as a whole.

I wonder what percentage of that increase was as a result of microtransactions. I bet it is a high percentage.

There are a ton of non-gamers playing candy crush. Two relatives are not into computers and just use their cellphones for talking and texting are both really into candy crush in their extra time.  One called me up and asked me how to transfer her candy crush account to her new phone so she wouldn't loose her progress.

I haven't been inside a Gamestop in well over six years or more.

Kind of the point. The growth of the gaming market may be a fact, but it's a fact that doesn't say much. A lot of kids are spending a lot of their parents' money on Fortnite and a lot of non-gamers are spending a lot of money on Candy Crush, and that's that. eSports are an in-thing, and apparently old school sports game are selling very well too. I don't know, that just doesn't make me feel that happy about the market.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I do think that the gaming market in general is reasonably healthy and isn't going anywhere. I just don't think that the huge sales numbers are an indication of anything about what I'd consider the core gaming market.

if you take revenue as the soul indicator of a from of entertainment, games are doing just fine. But just taking one issue, does that mean we don't have gambling in gaming? No it is part of the reason why they are making so much money.

I would also note this includes mobile gaming which had more % growth in revenue than anything else. But we all have phones, so everything is just going to turn out fantastic. :)

It hurts me to read that people spend money on candy crush. One of my friends one I considered intelligent plays candy crush, I was hard pressed not to revise my estimation of her intelligence.

Candy Crush was awesome, for like a day or 2. I think the non gamer casino slot machine type player is the target audience.

It also cited poorer than expected BLOPS 4 and FO76 sales as part of the loss.

GameStop specifically noted the poor critical and fan reception of FO76 with a classic, "well, look at the reviews.  Let's just leave it at that, eh?" when asked about FO76's poorer than expected sales.

A surprising number of folks aren't able to comprehend that a market is more complex than simply saying "revenue equals good things for everyone!"

It would be funny if it weren't so common.
