imageBlack Desert Devs Announce a New Battle Royale Mode

Over the past weekend, the Black Desert Online development team announced that it is working on a new battle royale survival mode for the game. Each of the mode's 50 players begin the fight as a Black Spirit, then must work to find a "fallen adventurer and possess it". From there, it's off to destruction of nearby crates and defeating mobs to gather up materials, equipment and abilities. As is the norm for battle royale games, the last player standing is declared the winner.

Interesting, i wonder how well it will be received within the community. And... Is this a new trend? Will mmorpgs from now on include a battle royal mode?

Honestly, as a "minigame" within the larger game, I wouldn't think it would be poorly received. It's just another fun way to play. :)

Well, i guess i meant to say, will it be another feature no one uses, or will it be a great hit, having people loging in just to play the battle royal mode.

To me, a Battle Royale game is fundamentally very different than the way an MMORPG plays.
It's kind of like saying that Madden Football has included a NBA 2018 mode. Sure they are both sports games...

I look at it like a Battleground or a Horde Mode, or Arena, which they've added before - so it should be well received here.

Seems to me, the people interested in Battle Royale are playing it already... not looking for a knock off of it in some other game.  The real risk is that it might encourage some of their player base to play the real game instead of BDO... because if you want to play hard core, you go to the source.

I wonder how many play the Skyforge mode? I see BR as a fun "PVP Game Mode" to play in an MMORPG, but that's about it. As long as it's within the game, it's not a bad thing.

Well, i guess i meant to say, will it be another feature no one uses, or will it be a great hit, having people loging in just to play the battle royal mode.

    It all depends on rewards.

When Trove added Battle Royale mode - it provided the fastest XP gain and thus fastest leveling up method.

Everyone did BR matches because the XP was so awesome.

Same will happen in BDO - if they make the rewards worth it - it will be popular
And that's exactly why I hate when stuff like this happens.  People aren't playing it because its FUN but rather because it's the fastest XP gain.   So in order to keep up with the Joneses people who like an actual MMORPG will have to go and play a Batte Royale game to get the rewards.  Stuff like this should NOT be linked to the main game's progression.

    That's my take.

I think it's more about Black Desert players having something else to do.

I'm not really interested in playing H1Z1 or whatever game first made it popular (Player Unknown's Battle Grounds?). But, if I'm in Black Desert I don't really see why I wouldn't try it if I could be competitive.

Some ppl dont like shooters. This is another option for them possibly. But if they do what revelation online is doing by making it have a minimum level cap to participate, then their goal isnt to get new players, but try and give their current olayers something to do.

SkyForge Battle Royale was a giant failure.

As has been said, its all about the rewards.

The developers have to give it incredible rewards to get people to participate because very few will do it because they like it.

@DMKano If what you say is true and if players only played for fun a game would be a ghost town then I would say it deserves to be so.

Could be fun, as it would give people that can't pvp at all due to gear gap, maybe have a little taste of the pvp without getting 100%-dead in a split second. Only concern is if any kind of cash shop items will influence the mode.

Does nothing to entice me to try BDO again.

Guess it'll be fun for those BDOers who want BR but don't wanna shell out cash for an actual BR game.

The issue with this sort of PvP mode becoming a standard is what it precludes.

The best PvP you can get is regional, any other PvP causes problems with that so is detrimental to a RvR approach.

In BR as in other such modes PvP is being treated like a separate game. You choose to do your PvP outside of the main game. I am not an open world PvP fan, but the best MMO design incorporates PvP into its world rather than making it into a separate game.

Lets be honest, this is what battle royale used to be, a mode, not an entire game. Honestly, I wish more mmorpgs could implement a battle royale pvp game mode. The problem is, given how "popular" it is, it'll probably just be turned into a stand-alone thing for $$$.

MMORPGs just aren't massive anymore. These games used to feel like living and breathing worlds. Now they feel like glorified menus, where players simply walk to whatever GameObject to enter "10v10 Battleground" mode etc. Ugh.

It's sad when a game like PUBG can feel more massive and immersive than a full-blown modern MMORPG.

Honestly if they add such a feature in WoW, but they really put effort into it, it will definitely be interesting and fun.

It will probably be fun in BDO as well.

For purely progression driven players, fun is not a required part of the equation. The drive to get their characters more powerful overpowers the sense of tedium, frustration and repetition, so again fun is not something they even consider.

It's a fundamentally different way of playing games - the pleasure comes from reaching progression goals - like better gear, more damage etc... all the grinding and tedium is deemed fine even if it is devoid of any fun - because again it's about the end results, not 1000s of hours of boring grind it will take to get there.

Once you make your game into a reward driven Skinner box - fun no longer matters.

This was "sort of" how I played linage 2. The "fun" was in getting more powerful so that I could be competitive. The milestones that I reached were "fun" even if the grinding several levels in the same place wasn't. It was all very "end justifies the means."

In the end i loved the experience and wouldn't trade it.

As I have zero interest in BR if I were a player of the regular MMORPG I would be a bit pissed if the BR mode offered superior rewards.  Equivalent is fine, but discernably better, not something I'd be agreeable with.

But, as I don't play they can muck it up all they wish.

exactly and it wasn't like there was a lack of goals you could choose from.
you wanted to be the leader of the greatest clan/alliance and take over aden ? sure go ahead.
not ambitious or strong enough for aden ? plenty of other castles to take over.
you wanted to be the best of your class and become a hero in olympiads and try to hold the title as long as possible ? no problem.
you wanted to be a well respected dwarf and have people contact you to craft things or spend all your time spoiling extra loot ? no problem here either.
or you could simply be a part of a great clan/community and just participate in mass pvp/siege and try your best.

the grind despite being outrageous was part of big package that was well worth it in the end.
though i would never play a game that requires an amount of dedication like that right now. it's simply not compatible with adult life.

I like combat mechanics and characters but I only "play" the game to get daily login rewards and some quick vent stuff (like golden goose eggs currently).

Actually fun PvE gameplay mode could be nice to have instead of yet another questionable PvP mode.

    Thank you for your time!
