CD Projekt Red and Capcom have announced a crossover event between The Witcher and Monster Hunter World. The new content will be arriving for PlayStation 4 and XBox One in early 2019, with the PC version coming along sometime after. Players will "take on the mantle of Geralt of Rivia" and trot off along a series of Witcher-inspired quests. Each quest offers players "unique gameplay" that blends RPG elements of The Witcher with the systems in MHW.

I'm with you, that's for sure. I'm tired of seeing Geralt everywhere and of seeing these weird crossover things too. :D

Seems like a natural combination to me.

Oh come on people!  Of all the places for Geralt to show up, a game literally called monsters hunters is the most natural of all places for one of the best monster hunters in gaming to show up!

Sure, we may be tired of him showing up everywhere else, but this one makes sense!

That's where crossovers belong, in a game designed around mashups. They should stay out of other games trying to cross promo and market.

I like CDPR and GoG, but I'm pretty sure they're only carrying the "No DRM" flag for marketing purposes or to save from paying Denuvo. They don't really care about anti-DRM or open source (which is where anti-DRM finds its roots). They care about marketing whatever they can however they can.
This isn't the first crossover in MHW, mind you. They already had outfits to play as Ryu from Street Fighter, Alloy from Horizon Zero Dawn, and Dante from Devil May Cry, among others. At least Geralt makes a lot of sense in a game about hunting monsters.

Anyway, I don't care about CDPR's motives or lack thereof. Ulterior motives only matter if the results of such are negative, and if their positive actions are done with the intent of gaining positive marketing, that's symbiosis at work.

You're right, it isn't the first one. Motive always matters and only looking at the immediate consequences is short-sighted.
Maybe. But given the sheer length of their anti-piracy stance, we're beyond "immediate consequences." Either CDProjekt are chess masters of a long game that we can't even comprehend, their motives are simply obtaining good PR for sales, or they are legitimately one of the most pro-consumer companies in the industry. There isn't much point in speculation at this point, and Chekhov's gun would have the first scenario as profoundly unlikely.

you guys say it like not one have ulterior motives to do anything, a job well done? he is being paid, they don't want a drm so they don't waste time on a product who will be broken in less then a month? and want to captalize it with PR? I don't see a problem, I would have a problem if they working place had to bar the windows to prevent they workers to jump said windows.

As someone who still plays MHW, I could care less if it's a Witcher 3 crossover or Billy & Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon crossover. It's new content and another reason to swing around my charge blade.

I really hope they do an open world version of the game

Crossovers have been a part of the Monster Hunter series far before MHW. I feel like this is an odd time to start getting tired of them, but I think that probably means you are either new to the series or maybe just don't like cross overs in general. Personally, I love the cross overs and it gives me a reason to keep playing their game (which I like), so it has been a win/win for me.

Ciri would make a LOT more sense given that she is capable of such interdimensional travel.

Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate how perfect a Witcher would be for Smash Bros. They already have exactly 4 spells which would translate cleanly to Neutral, Side, Up, and Down Specials in Smash.

Man I was hoping you'd see this thread after the Conan discussion. This thread immediately brought to my mind, your point about the casual disregard for lore and narrative integrity.

I don't mind mashups and crossovers, when they're appropriate, for the games they're appropriate in, like Super Smash Bros.

If people want to play as Geralt fine, but I don't want to team up in MHW with Mario, Geralt, or Diablo. "McDonalds" style gaming is fine, for McDonalds types of games. Keep that fast food mentality where it belongs though.

I was going to pick the game up for the holiday, but now I think it's a pass. What I find troubling about this is how much these games can change in look and feel after release and purchase. It pisses me off when a studio totally revamps a game post launch or adds a bunch of tawdry bullshit.
But isn't there a bit of a difference?

I'm 100% in agreement that there needs to be integrity.

If this was batman or hello kitty or something way out in left field then I'd say "sure" you're correct.

But having a monster hunting game with a character who is all about monster hunting, and that the art design isn't so different, as opposed to having some sort of super hero, I can give it a pass as far as my taste is concerned.
