http://www9.nationalgeographic.com/roper2006/findings.html

Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.
6 in 10 young Americans don't speak a foreign language fluently.

20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia. (It's the largest country in Africa.)

48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim. (It's Hindu—by a landslide.)

Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.

Remember the December 2004 tsunami and the widespread images of devastation in Indonesia?

Three-quarters of respondents failed to find that country on a map. And
three-quarters were unaware that a majority of Indonesia's population
is Muslim, making it the largest Muslim country in the world.

Seventy percent could not find Iran or Israel.

74% think English is the biggest language.

Ofcourse it doesn't apply to every american. But it's still pretty accurate. Kinda alarming for a country that "rules" the earth?

    It is sad.
BUT... (and I'm not defending kids not knowing geography)
it points out one weak spot in America right now.
What are some strong points in American society?
How about our entrepreneurship?  Our sense of individuality that we cultivate?  Our strong sense of liberty?  Our resourcefulness when it comes to solving problems?  Our message of freedom that we (sometimes) show to the rest of the world?

I know those things are hard to measure, but I would challenge someone that they are more important to our survival than a geography lesson.

Anyone can learn geography in a couple of days.  But those other traits take a lot longer and have to be deeply instilled.  And I think a vast majority of Americans are filled to the brim with those traits.

I have this weird feeling that America is about to go through some DRASTIC changes.  I'm sensing it all around me.  American's are getting really sick of the status quo.  There is a change in the direction of the wind, a storm is brewing.  Just you wait and see.  We'll pick things up like geography, but right now we're getting ready to do some ground breaking things.

Indeed. The American Public School system is a joke. They pour our money into building their palaces, but fail in the education part of the whole equation.

While I agree this is sad, I would like to point out that I could do everything mentioned (except for the foreign language) and I am a 15 year old in public school. Most people I know could easily do the same and I read this was for 18-24 year olds I think??? That is just...wow. May I ask where these 18-24 year olds are from? I understand that not all states have good public school systems, but PA isn't doing that bad in the area.

Did you watch 20/20 Stupid in America? Well it answers your question on how schools are doing and their stupid Teacher Union which gets in the way of firing bad teachers. Stupid in America

I scored a 17 out of 20. I missed the "What city does the TV Show CSI take place in?" because I have never watched the show. I also missed one about the population of the U.S., but I learned heh. Can't remember the 3rd I missed.

Public education in the US wouldn't all that bad at all if they could get students to pay attention. Add to that most parents seem more concerned with worrying more about whether evolution or creation should be taught or worrying about selling sugar in schools... which is a moot argument as teachers have to pretty much teach nothing but prep for the proficiency tests every year.

Get rid of the current testing system, PAY teachers, remove all electronics from classrooms (phones etc..), and let teachers actually teach subjects out of a flexible curriculum instead of whatever religious group screams the loudest about censoring textbooks. And by flexible curriculum I mean adjusting the subject matter based on the class' learning level and allowing books outside of textbooks. Remove books with any obvious political or religious bias and there shouldn't be a problem. I learned more on my own reading in school than anything presented in textbooks.
