Respecting the License's Agreement or PvPing?

I'd like try to explain the idea of why PvP doesn't exist in Lord of the Rings Online through another MMORPG with a major IP and popular world; Star Wars Galaxies. Let's make a what if scenario. As you know Star Wars expands beyond just 6 movies in the Expanded Universe. SOE was able to disregard the license's agreement and was slightly able to contridict what has already been added to EU. But let's say they decided to follow the agreement; not to mention make SWG story driven. But still have what exist today in the game.

Now, you have a character who you worked your butt off on. You have always thought the Empire was awesome, and so you decide to ally yourself with them. The Battle of Endor Event is about to come up, and you're excited. For three days the Alliance and your belove Empire dook it out. You have a good feeling that the effort and strength in the Empire surpasses the player base in the Alliance. Clearly, the Empire has done some significant damage to the core of the Alliance during this event. But because of the license's agreement, SOE must follow through the storyline of Star Wars. As you know in the movie, Return of the Jedi, the Empire was crippled by the Alliance during the Battle of Endor. And so it repeats in SWG because of said agreement.

You continue to play SWG regardless of your feelings towards the story-arc. Now what is left of the Empire is now called the Imperial Remnants, and the Rebel Alliance has grown larger to become the New Republic replacing what the Empire had establish. Through several storyline events which follows the novels previously written it appears that the New Republic has toppled the Imperial Renmants. You claim it is not fair, especially when the Imperials out number the opposition on your server.

All of a sudden, a Alien force from the Outer Rim attacks in a new storyline event which has the galaxy and the New Republic shaking. Towards the end of this event, you find out that your Imperial faction has join what is left of the New Republic(Galactic Alliance) to fight off these alien invaders(the Yuuzhan Vong). You spend all that time trying to be evil, but because of a blasted story arc you are now one of the good guys! See how PvP is pointless when good is predetermined to win.

Turbine agreed to use the material in the LoTRs novels to create a story driven MMORPG. But when they found out that they couldn't alter the material due to the agreement they decided to remove the ideas of playable evil races, and PvPing. Perhaps if the storyline in Lord of the Rings Online took place during the climax of the storyline and did not progress any forward I could see PvP. But Turbine has made it clear that they will follow what is written in the novels.

I understand that both that Sauron's forces won battles[and I definitely understand that the Empire in SW did as well], but in the end good over came both. Since Turbine has decided to do something more story based and they have this unsual license's agreement; some ideas had to be tossed. But then again, they could have included some form of PvPing, maybe competitive arenas(I'm pretty sure people dueled in Middle Earth). But you have to realize that this is what happens when you deal with a IP like Lord of the Rings which is respected.

But I will agree that because MMORPGs are becoming even more popular these days amongst console, RTS, and FPS gamers PvP is going to be a big attraction. But if Turbine can live up to their promise of a complex AI and even more defined jobs then things can still be interesting. If you're still looking for PvP, I suggest stick to WoW guys.

this licence thing bothers me... in original Middle-Earth Online they had pvp and evil races and Sierra had the rights to do that (all this from another thread, not like I actually knew this). Now Turbine took over and suddenly no pvp. How did that happen? All because they changed the name to LotRO instead of MEO? Or did they just get worse deal than Sierra? Or was it their decision because they wanted to stick to the books and having playable evil races would cause too big problems (because like you said, evil side would lose in the end)? Wouldnt it been easier/cheaper to continue where Sierra left off than re-designing the whole game (yes i know they had to change the graph engine, thats not what i meant by changing design)?

edit: btw, anyone that wants pvp and decides that WoW is the game for that is a retard.

Part of the agreement was that Turbine was allowed to use the material from The Hobbit and the LotRs novels. But nothing major could be altered in anyway to contridict what Tolkien had already wrote. But Turbine had the option of making it story-based as opposed to keeping it with a simple background story to explain a climatic war.

I think in the end, the question is do you want to play a MMORPG or do you want to play a MMORPG? Turbine is trying to make a game that's fully immersive through the lore, and story of Lord of the Rings. They definitely state what type of players they're trying to attract. At the LotRs Online official website their is a article called RP v G. It talks abou the difference between two general crowds; Role Playing Gamers(not just simple roleplayers, but gamers who enjoy RPGs) and Ruthless Power Gamers. In a sense it also sterotypes PvPers as well in relations to Ruthless Power Gamers.

I think people who claim they won't play Lord of the Rings Online because it doesn't have PvP are lying. I believe that they might try it because of the IP, but if they still don't like the idea they'll play something else. For me, I think PvP should be a option but for this type of MMORPG I don't think it's important compared to a few other MMORPGs. I've enjoyed what Turbine did with Asheron's Call and it's story driven gameplay, so I have high hopes.
