Over at GamesIndustry.biz, industry analysts have checked in on their 2018 predictions and offered up a series of thoughts about the coming year. In one of the more interesting predictions, Michael Pachter believes that Overwatch will go free-to-play within the first six months of the year. Further, Patcher believes that Blizzard will offer a compensatory package of goodies to soothe the doubtless disgruntled community of players who have already purchased the game.

Would make sense to be honest, as the game does make most of cheddar from loot boxes at this time.

Now i like the paper thin cheater protection that having to buy a new copy of the game very time offer, i am not sure it really matter much.

Not sure it is true, but it is not that weird of an idea. Others have put that idea forward pretty much since launch.

This have been a good conversation

I like owls but will never be an OWL viewer. Either enjoy listening to people who are working together or someone raging if I am so low that I feel need to watch that game. Watched once and realized it was not really fun.

I think he could be right. But I fully expect a bigger announcement around OW at Blizzcon. Like a pseudo-sequel/expansion building off the main game. Main game is then free to play. Expansion has new heroes, PVE campaigns, and more. They're going to find some way to make the game matter for a longer haul, and the OWL won't do that alone. It needs more content/more reasons to get people playing and sharing stuff.

    Hmmm.

HotS is f2p and its financial performance - or lack thereof - will provide pause for thought.
King has lots of f2p titles as well e.g. Candy Crush - and its MAUs have been suffering as well.

So I think there will have to be a very solid case made. Not just a possible argument but a rock solid - and by the way if it doesn't happen you are fired - argument that going f2p will improve profitability.

And against that they will have to weigh the danger. Go f2p and get a clear surge in players - no problem. Go f2p and things just "carry on" as before and there will be assumptions made: they have gone f2p the game must be failing. Hastening any decline.

So - whilst I would expect AB to be looking at lots of options - I'm not so sure they will make OW f2p.

I'm not sure adding a paywall for future content will do them any favours. They have stated multiple times that all new content, maps, game modes and heroes, will be free.

There would probably be a lot of backlash.

Pay for the expansion get the current game included - sounds better. Maybe throw in some sort of limited WoW like trial at some point - or at the same time - sounds better to me.

As @TheDarkrayne says though ...... could be a backlash but hey it will be an expansion you understand not any DLC like content that we said would include!

But the article could be right. Not sure what this says about their thoughts on AB either.

Nothing is free when it comes to big studios like Activision/Blizzard... There's always a catch. I believe keeping it B2P is not a bad thing at all, but F2P seems to be the future of all E-Sport games... I don't have a personal opinion about that, but I heard a lot of bad things from CS-GO players when it went F2P... Anyway... You will still need to buy a gas mask in order to survive the toxicity of Overwatch community hahaha... You know I'm right lol.

    Good timing @SBFord!

Was gonna buy a copy so that my wife and I could play with my niece. Think I'll hold off a bit to see what happens.

it never deserved full price anyway.

Overwatch was never a full price game. It was a $40 game, with a $60 deluxe edition, as opposed to the typical $60/$80.

It was one of the most intelligently priced video games I can recall over the past few years, imo.

$40 is a substantial sum, but it's noticeably lower than the $60 standard that would've sounded the "Mtx in a $60 AAA release??  Fuck off!" alarms among gamers.

I honestly dont know why anyone would choose this 40 buck game as opposed to Paladins which is free.

Micheal Pachter is right with his predictions about as often as a tic-tac-toe playing chicken.

The only time anyone ever agrees with him is when he agrees with their confirmation bias.

As someone who has played both fairly extensively, it's because I can tell what is going on in Overwatch and I'm often lost in a sea of effects and sparkle ponies crapping rainbows in Paladins.

If they'd tone down the effects, turn off the silly billy floating damage numbers, reduce the amount of particles flying around in every fight and generally just improve the graphics, then I'd like it.

I mean the game plays well and the characters are... well, 99% copies of each other's games so not much difference there, but at the end of the day OW is just more polished and easier on the eyes.
