The EverQuest site has been updated with a new producer letter to kick off the game's 20th anniversary. "EQ's launch feels a world away now, lest we forget dial-up modems, Y2K panic, CRT monitors, 640jx480, open-book medding, corpse runs, lost corpses, ninja looting, guild drama, dawn of DKP and so many other moment." the blog reads.

That is Everquest original box art painted by Keith Parkinson (RIP).

    Love it.

I remember the night a system message announced the first time ever for an online game: 100,000 concurrent players.

Once they fixed the login issues - probably some here who remember sitting in chat rooms.

Not really 640x480 either given that the action happened in a window with the icons around!

There was fun to be had though.

i remember when i first started playing it i started as a wood elf ranger did not know what a npc was versus a real player, so asked randomly the one's i saw walking around could they help me get down with /say and then when they just started randomly walking away after i thought " man bunch asshole won't even help a noob find his way... "

when i finally do get down i see a wolf sitting near a lift so am wondering why it so calm not trying kill me then heard it say " wolf, how you doing today? " blew my mind turn out it was a player just chilling in starting zone, love the game even with all it flaws.

    It's still a great MMO.
.actually 2 great MMOs.... live eq and progression server eq.

Most servers have a great community (bats eyes at phinigel and xegony) tho not all (glares at ragefire).

My original favorite thing to do once i was high level back in the day. IVU in everfeost. Give out good weapons to decaying skeles. /ooc in zone 3 ssoy have been given to mobs in zone, gl finding them ;)

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

    Currently Playing EVE, ESO

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

No game will match this greatness. I feel as if games just dont satisfy my needs anymore after EQ.

I remember announcements on when a character hit max level.. when leveling was a feat in itself. When you could tell what armor/weapon someone had simply by the looks of it before cosmetics took over. When you knew who was good and bad simply by there reputation on the server and personal experience.

Innoruuk server will always have a special place in my heart out of all the games/servers I played on.

I miss the days when you could happen to run into a GM doing testing on a live server and it was acceptable to be polite and chat a little. I miss the days when each server had specific GM's assigned to them and it was actually possible to have repeat customer service and build a rapport with that staff.

    RIP the good old days.
