Fortnite's New 'X-Ray Llamas' Will Let Players See Box Contents Before Purchase
Fortnite's Save the World Players will be getting an update to the game that will change the way V-Buck Llamas behave. Once deployed, V-Buck Llamas will be renamed "X-Ray Llama" and will allow players to see the contents of the box prior to purchase. "Not interested in what the Llama offers? Simply wait until the daily store refresh and there will be a new selection."

Which is "classic" bricks-and-mortar marketing e.g. having to walk past stuff you didn't go into a store to buy but it certainly isn't gambling.
This made me realize how long lottery scams have been going on, i played mmorpg golf game Shot Online, and never got anything in the paid random item loot boxes, and there was this guy in the middle that always traded. It took me over year to realize the guy was an employee of the company, and nothing rare was ever going to pop in those bought boxes, only bought thru him via ridiculous amounts of in game currency.
Your best bet is to simply refuse this loot box scam altogether and send it to the graveyard, and start playing the game because its fun.. Cuz its only there because the game is NOT fun..
Yeah, it essentially does the same thing most companies with 'bundle' systems like this aim for, selling lower profit items with some 'popular' ones sprinkled it. If they just went the 'old' route and just let people buy the things they wanted outside of the 'bundle' they would make significantly less money. But, whether everyone involved likes to admit this or not, we dont want governments really involved in something like this since regulations could easily get out of hand, especially with how controversial gaming as a whole can be in regards to content etc. Let us remember to thank EA's greed for all of this getting set into motion. Now we just gotta deal with Activision selling dot-sights since they lost Destiny 2.
These llama's could be incredible money makers !
It says they "refresh daily", which implies their use is limited.
So if the boxes change every hour, you'll need a herd of llama's to check multiple boxes...

The daily store refreshes, not sure how long the Llama lasts though.
They can manipulte this system in so many ways it will make your head spin !
"Hmmm... I wonder what's in that box ? Hey, if I bought more llama's, I could take a peek !"
Fiendishly clever, lol, they've found a way to make players pay for things they'll often not even BUY !

Governments in Europe decided they couldn't stop gambling in the early 16th century so they adopted a "tolerate, control and tax" approach; they have had a few centuries to find the right balance. So don't give up hope that the US - having pretty much banned legal gambling for so long won't succeed - eventually - in finding a balance as well.
And having lived and worked in both the US and European countries its also worth noting that this difference in approach:
- centuries of "controlled tolerance" in Europe - so some control is no longer even an issue vs.
- "all control is bad" - resulting in illegal, "mob" fuelled gambling etc. etc
means that different posters on these forums will see things differently.

Why are they scum? I don't like Fortnite in any way but it's properly FTP, no pay to win, cosmetics only for real money and at least some cosmetics can be earned for free.
What's scummy? Having their game become what is most likely the most popular game ever created by a large margin? The absolute buggers. They achieved major success and the only possible reason for it is that they are in league with the devil.
I hate the game because it's not my kind of thing but all Epic did was create something that hundreds of thousands (is it millions now?) enjoy.

It's basically a daily offering of random cosmetics you don't already have that you can buy if you want to. It changes each day but it will show a new set of loot if you buy the previous one. You can't buy them forever though, there are daily or weekly caps on different kinds.
You don't need to buy anything to see them. X-Ray Llamas have nothing to do with other Llamas. You can't buy X-Ray Llamas to see inside other Llamas or buy the ability to see inside other Llamas in any way.
All the Llamas you can buy with real money are X-Ray ones. Every single Llama in the cash shop. So, this means you are not buying loot boxes anymore, you are buying a selection of loot. Loot boxes, in the sense we hate; random unknown loot that costs real money, are gone from Fortnite.
I'll state that clearly for skim readers:
You can not buy unknown loot boxes in Fortnite anymore.
You can still earn loot box Llamas through gameplay. You can't see what is in them but that doesn't really matter because you'll open them anyway.. you already have them, they were free.
A lot of people here are confused about what this is and they really need to read what I've explained here.
It's not a perfect system. But it's better than selling boxes with random stuff.

I think it’s more analogous to a store that only sells one box of mixed items but let’s you look inside the box. From what I read, it seems like you can see inside any box you can buy, but you only can buy 1 box at a time.
So I guess the gambling part would be that you buy the current box even though it doesn’t have what you want because you hope the next box will.
So yeah, direct purchase should always be the goal, but even I have to admit that this is better than the old way.

EPIC is the only gaming company right now, doing shit right. Challenging Steam. Making well optimized and well running games. Making F2P games that are insanely high quality, while not needing milk the user like every other f2p title out there.
Everything EPIC is doing right now, is going to make the whole gaming industry better. Stop letting your mentalities of 'amg, fortnite is a cartoony kids game, what trash, fuck epic" blind you from reality. Fine, you dont like Fortnite, stop being blind to what its doing.
I haven't seen anything saying you outright buy refreshes on their own.
