It seems that the appetite for battle royale games remains strong. Respawn CEO Vince Zampella revealed on Twitter that Apex Legends had drawn in over a million unique players less than eight hours after launch. The game was announced and launched simultaneously yesterday for PC (via Origin), PlayStation 4 and XBox One.

Tried it yesterday, it's really nice and runs smooth as you would wish for any other game that's released to run. You should definitly try it out yourself.

For a little context: Warhammer gained over half a million in the first week.  It also had a box price of $49.99, which is approximately...  $49.99 + tax more than Apex Legends.

How many gamers you think Apex would've gotten in the first 8 hours if it had a similar box price?

It's like we're all Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day with the BR fad.  We've been here before, folks.

If it weren't for  all the  free copies and sponsored streamers, the game wouldn't be in anyone's eye.

I can see the constant sway in Twitch,it is pathetic,2-3 days in then they are gone with their drones of groupies onto the next game. However that is all it takes, that first day or two to create more sales than your game deserves.

Pow pow ....pew pew ,hide behind rock..heal..pow pow ..pew pew...hide behind rock heal...BORING !!
Less creative than the guy who created the six sided dice or a slice of bread. If you happen to like the BR genre, you have already done this game over and over and over, the ONLY difference is  new title and you got suckered in to spend more money to play the same game.

What happened to Anthem, everyone quit Anthem already? When i pick a game,i PLAY IT,i don't jump around game to game following some streamer or following the crowd.it took me forever to fidn a new game i would love,i found it and still play it as much as the first day.

I played about 5 matches and had a blast.

I played it a bit. Being very very sceptical about it. Usually this fortnite/battle royales are swan songs of dying companies trying to squeeze final buck using assets of games they were developing.

Well not this. This is genuine. Its true game worthy of Respawn reputation ( original creators of MW )

Without doubt we are seeing next mega hit here

That awkward moment when the smaller team releases a product that's technically better than your upcoming AAA 60$ product.

By technically I mean, no server issues, no bugs, no glitches, works smooth as a butter (smoother than Overwatch on my rig and I think OW is one of the better optimized games), no drops, no lags.

Man I really hate myself sometimes because I never got the hang of BR games. I find it really dull and uninspired. I'm not enticing my opinion on anyone, it's just how it is. I tried Fortnite and lasted like what ... 15 minutes? Thought maybe it's the wrong game, then I went on and tried Realm Royale, that one kept me engaged for a little over an hour but yeah , ended up uninstalling them both.

Overwatch is where I get my online shooter fix from.

I played for a few hours last night and had a blast! Normally not a huge fan of this whole Battle Royale craze, but this felt good. It was nice to see each hero have abilities so it adds a different dynamic to the game.

I plAyed two matches. One of them i guess my teammates dc’d so i was by myself and i felt great because i didnt have the social anxiety of other people while learning a new game. (Btw training mode before you play is a great idea)

The other match.... dropped in. Someguy who was extremely loud and constantly talking. Wasnt rude or obnoxious or anything but definitely made me anxious and uncomfortable to be forced into listening to someone who clearly had a
Better understanding of the game when i was clearly terrible, trying to read things. Not knowing anything, and he is expecting pings and callouts and im just trying to figure what guns do what.

Need solo queue so i can learn at my own pace and so i dont have to be forced into social situations that make me feel anxious and uncomfortable. Im gonna be terrible, i hate putting that burden on anyone else.

Still have about 100million+ to go to topple Fortnite (it wont happen)

They don't have to topple Fortnite. Nobody has toppled WoW in 14 years yet some are healthy enough to be very successful. Respawn has the potential to do the same, if they don't screw up customers.

My 2 cents, well a million is hardly anything in a globe sense, if there is no new games on release during this time well getting a million under 8 hours is a new record breaker? Or just lame attempts to start some noise or ring some bell to start some hype generating PR thing that every PR person would come up with.

Since its new in MMO space ppl will talk about it for sure, but it far more amazing if been told your game still had a million players still after 8 years from now that is a big deal, for most MMO they don't even hold 8k of ppl around the 2 years in. Of course there will be exception but we are not talking about those. And since BR genera is still somewhat new-ish not enough historical data to calling amazing for those that cares.

Maybe, just maybe it just me but this game sure looks very inspired by Fortnite lmao, went and check out the videos for this game. IMO just another Fortnite wannabe, looks new as least in term of art style than your average Fornite. But will that be enough to hold its own or just more of the same with "some" key differences for the obvious.

But as for anything newer than the last game of course ppl would folk to it, while Anthem is not a BR game so cant really compare. However, I will say the fans of BR is seeming globally larger than said any other genera. At the same time BR is more of a tendy genera like fashion wave, then again PvP game type don't last long nor a long term game to invest into IMO. End of the day, we all want to lay back and relax in the warm of friends and family, cant say the same for those that are only into PvP games.

Lastly, I say Apex Legend looks more serious darker than those lesser kiddy grade apparel like in Fortnite art Style, perhaps, this will no doubt steal some numbers off of other games, but only time will tell where the dice land for Apex Legend. Side note; the name sounding less impress every time you say it out loud at least for me anyway.

If those million even spend one dollar each they are looking at a million dollars... not bad at all.

  • kjempffkjempff Member RarePosts: 1,760
Technically impressive to scale to a million players on launch without serious problems. Of course it is not the same as a mmo but still.. must have been a very organized development process to achieve that.

So much for masses hating EA and saying how they wont play their games... lol
Implying that the crowd who plays EA games and the crowd who doesn't are the same crowd.
