Well I'm in a bit of nostalgia recently (lol) and I figured I'd ask, what was your favorite profession? can be pre-cu, cu, etc. NGE need not apply since they are all the same rofl. I'd prefer it not be jedi simply because there was so much to this game other than jedi.
For me it was ranger pre-cu. Rangers didn't receive much love from the devs, but they still had tons of content from the players. Many people would say "for harvesting all you need is novice scout, there isn't that much a difference with a ranger." They were lying. A master ranger harvested a ton more resources. Every good crafter had a good ranger they went to. While they opened up general contracts, if you were a good ranger, you were given exclusive contracts for say, 1 or 2 million of the animal spawn that just shifted in. A smart ranger who understood the laws of supply and demand would be one of the richest.
Then there was the content you decided to create. When people were on their jedi knight trials looking for rare creatures, a ranger came in huge handy tracking them. Or tracking for guild hunts, you got right to the action fast instead of having to send various people fanning out trying to find a krayt.
There were also some rangers who loved to help out noobs. I sadly didn't get to do this enough. Before noobs learned about 90% comp armor and were getting their asses kicked on tatooine, i would see rangers setting up camps to invite them in to rest and be healed. When I was trying to get master ranger for camping, we used to throw camp parties. Advertise out at mining outpost for people to come visit the camps setup. Many people would simply stop their grinding and come and watch the party. We'd have entertainers going wild, people dueling, medics healing, it was a great service and a hell of a lot of fun.
A ranger was also one who loved exploration. A ranger was a stash of knowledge of various planets traveled to, and where the best spots on each planet were. I remember leading some new guildmates through various hunting contracts with my exploration and tracking skills, was fun.
Also lovely was as a miner, mask scent or camoflauge. You didn't need buffs on dangerous planets to check your harvies. Simply go camo.
What was everyone else's favorite prof?
Comments
First and foremost, Creature Handler. It was my first profession, and back before they nerfed it, I could have three big cats out, following me in military formation. I adored that.
Next, TKM. Nothing stood in my way. Well, PvE, anyway.
And last, Bounty Hunter.
But, what was really fantastic about pre-NGE was the fact that I could mix professions into a hybrid. For example, Bounty Hunter and Creature Handler was a handy combination.
Grrr... I hope SOE burns in Hell.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
As ye SOE, so shall ye weep.
no armor needed
food buffs enough to take down just about anything
animations (remember those)
all state and all pool attacks
later with second slot
ranger/MBE (heh, two non-iconic professions)
A nice non-combat uncle Owen-esque roleplaying character. A small pet and a fishing pole...
Pre-CU Ranger all the way. I think the phrase was, "Its not a profession, it is a lifestyle." You hit on most, if not all, of the reasons that I enjoyed Ranger.
Skill based systems are the best!
As for that second sentence...

I actually liked TK better post-cu than pre. Pre-CU, I chose TK out of necessity to balance my doc abilities in the field. Back then I was a med center doc first, and an adventurer second. There was never a lack of conversation or customers in the med center. We always worked for tips, always allowing the lower level guys to heal the battle wounds of players, while we took care of the stat wounds. Even the tumblers didn't bother me at the time. Those guys would level in a few days and then drop the whole thing when the crafting line hit. For those that were serious about the profession, we would help with stims, wound packs, low level buffs, and resources to help make the grind a bit cheaper. Those were probably my best times on the server to be honest. TK at that time allowed me to be productive outside once I earned enough to buy a decent set of composite and a knuckler. Buffing my guildies before runs at the vette or dwb was an added pleasure.
Post-CU, tkm actaually became my passion. No longer were we the "little jedi" waiting in the wings, we actually became a novelty of our own. We never needed armor, and there were only two knucklers in game worth equiping. Best of all? We became a major minority, not enough dps most said. I could never bring myself to drop doctor, but once I experienced what a master doc/tkm could do, there was no turning back (and this was even with two worthless branches of doc).
It was a great game, and those were good times.
Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.
Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside
Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.
My favorite...
When the game was young I enjoyed playing my CH/smuggler/pistoleer back when we needed creature tanks because we had no buffs or armor. That was before anyone had a jedi. I remember my group fought our first dark jedi npc it was awesome I think my pets died a hundred times during that fight.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.
MID/Tailor/TK, a combination that could either make you beautiful or beat you with the ugly stick. Otherwise known as Kephi Kyren, the Imperial Beautician.
or
MDoc/MCH, a combination that could wander without fear in most places and be welcome in all of them
Otherwise known as Azhriaz Mind-Dancer, factionless twi'lek veternarian and explorer of worlds.
Pre-CU, both were viable, self sufficient and much loved parts of their galaxies. Post CU, Kephi lost her ability to defend herself and and still make a person fabulous. Shortly afterwards, she ceased to exist. Post NGE, Azhriaz lost her pets and her reason for being. Afterwards, she too became nothing more than memory.
I've come to dread nostalgia. There are too many glorious ghosts there.

i loved doc for some reason. just the competition of having the best stims/buffs. it taught me about crafting!
but then i had a master pistoleer/bh with a sweet DE-10 and began my jedi hunting career. however, that was a whopping 3 weeks before the CU hit so that 4 mill i spent on my DE-10 went to waste after the conversion
even with that DE-10, my other character was a swordsman/tka that hunted junior krayts and pistol components for my BH and the components i needed for the Scythe for my swordsman. with that, I hired this weaposmith to build the weapons I needed and I sold off the mid level krayt tissue for millions and millions of credits. got me rich and nice weapons. man o man was that a blast! had 2 scythes that got a 35% damage slice and a 32% speed slice (i wasn't speed capped). even the randomness of slicing i enjoyed, cuz that meant the uber weapons were still somewhat rare.
too bad that's over....f'n sony.
I was a big fan of ranger, never got to master though. /hated grinding camps, they were completely useless.
Pikegrrl for me, what can I say I just enjoyed hiting things with a big pointy stick
After the CU I liked TKA as well just for the not having to wear armor but pike was still my favorite.
I'll have to qfe this, too.
There was just something about the pike animations and sounds that I just loved, plus all the ns pikes and dots you could get, it was just fun . Definately my favorite.
The profession that i kept the longest was TKM. It went well as a base with virtually any combination and UA3 was undeniably sexy.
A close 3rd is Swordswoman (with doc). Speedcapped swords were lethal.
all in all, melee FTW.
I also extremely enjoyed tailor and ID on my alts ( i couldnt stand having a non-combat or hybrid main, I love killing ). If only i could change my clothes and appearance instantly irl lol.
For the Horde!
SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!
Hands down TKM was my favorite and the animations was just stunning.
Besides that when i unlocked jedi pre-CU was fun too. Call me crazy but I actually enjoyed grinding my template
Non-combat was chef/tailor. I enjoyed that alot!
"There are two kinds of spurs, my friend. Those that come in by the door; those that come in by the window"
master rifle man.
I loved the challenge for the solo hunt and snipe in pve,and frankly the look on that mch/mdocs face on pvp when his mind pool went bye-bye.
i hated grinding camps too, but i miss them now
Tin Foil hats dont work.. its all a conspiracy

Oh yes. Pikemen were wonderful. I could watch them for hours. Pike animations may actually have been the best in not just SWG, but ANY game. It was so beautiful.

Tracking droids were broken, so I picked up 4 spots on Ranger so I could somewhat have a chance of finding the hunted Jedi.
It was always a good feeling when I could find my mark using Tracking from the Ranger skills. It took patience finding them, I would set up markers on the world map and use those as guide lines to stop and use the tracking skill. But all still in Rancor areas and just outside it.
It was easier to find them on Dathomir than Endor, Yavin, and sometimes Dantooine. I never could find those hunting spots on the last two planets, but I knew what outpost they liked to go through on Endor and just searched the surronding areas there.

Remember /pikearea 2 or whatever? It was the Area one, not the circle or whatever, I think pikeman had 2 types of aoe's. It was the one where you swing the pike in a backhand motion with 1 hand, stab, then jump kick the target, was the best thing ever.

Creature Handler (because it was a lot of fun to tame/train/use the huge variety of creatures)
Ranger (becuase it gave you a lot of good skills and it fit my exploring side like a glove)
Jedi (because u had a jedi to play with! but I hated the TEF, I could never really play alongside my friends, so it was more of an exotic curiosity than a real character)

want your game back?
I liked mostly all the professions I played but Master Swordsman was my favorite. I did alot of stuff with my powerhammer and there wasnt a place where I couldnt go as a Doc/swordsman/pikeman hybrid. Pre-cu pve was swordsmans heaven, I remember a group of 4 trying to outdamage me on Acklay and they still couldnt out damage me and my scythe ( powerhammer was no good on Acklay he had 90% resist but only 35% to kinetic). I also had some of the absolute best powerhammers ever crafted on Naritus a few over 1k max and 400 min.
{(RIP)} SWG

I actually always viewed carbineer the "elite" PvP Profession. Those who were skilled Mcarbs were very good pvpers. And they were also the little known secret as the ultimate answer to the mcm/rm. We always took out a MBH/carbineer with us, and that's why CM's were NEVER a problem.
I never played carbineer, but always had great respect for those who were.
