im interested in this game since its number one now...... anyways can anyone tell me if there is any "role-playing" aspects to this game at all??? like mining, fishing, hunting.. pets etc..?? stuff to do when your not questin or pvp or somethin...?
theres no cooking/fishing/mining or any other proffession etc like that, its a PvP based game with coop missions (RPG) at the side... it has a good story line too :P play it but if u wanna fish/farm/mine etc then play runescape :P
If you enter this game with any hope at all to experience a solid roleplaying atmosphere ... you will run into a concrete wall.
The community is mostly horrible and immature. The game is high-paced action which means no relaxing elements to drift the players off into something else than frequent button mashing.

Community means nothing, the fact is, if you want to pretend to be a fishmen, then go play EQ, if you wanna kill things and test your skills then you get gw.

dont lissen to them , i RP a lot , if you want to RP , you RP
more then a million players , sure there are roleplaying players
and you dont have to pvp to have fun or be a good player
If you want to RP, you can. Alot of people dont, but then most people don't RP in any game.
That being said, if you're not doing quests, pvp'ing, missions, or collecting skills, there isn't much to the game.
There are no tradeskills. No houses to furnish or pets to nurture. It is called Guild Wars, and the name does justice to the basis of the game. The main focus is building your character to participate in Guild Battles or Faction battles.
There is crafting but the craftsmen do it all. If you want a specific piece of armor, the Armor crafter would ask you for say, 4 hide squares, 3 bones, and 150g. You can buy those parts or hope they drop off of enemies, but that's it. No skinning or fishing or flower picking.
It's an action oriented game, and while you can RP (I have), the main focus of the game is not about the life your character leads, it's about your characters place in the Guild Wars.
"Because it's easier to nitpick something than to be constructive." -roach5000
As far as the non-combat role-playing aspects, guild wars is not aimed towards that sort of dynamic, and none of those are available to a player (except pets, but outside of fighting your pet does nothing but follow you and get you and itself stuck.)
Combat role-playing, IMO, would be more effective in Guild Wars than a lot of other MMO's, if all you're after is PVE, because of the instancing. If you have a group of people who want to RP, there isn't going to be anyone else to come and spoil the experience.
"play it but if u wanna fish/farm/mine etc then play runescape :P"
hmm, I'd still have to say don't play runescape
"if you want to pretend to be a fishmen, then go play EQ, if you wanna kill things and test your skills then you get gw."
Comments like this are just annoying, since not only are you insulting the OP's interest in immersing himself in his game world (and not just as a mindless orge), but it's also false perspectives on both EQ and GW. EQ involves combat and skills, and GW doesn't really test your skill so much as your strategy and teamwork.

I am afraid this game is not for you if you are looking for (a lot of) that my friend. It also depends on how strict this RP style is:
In the cities/towns: I guess U could try and RP hardcore, but u'd have to do it over a private chat channel (guild, party, or private tell), just not on the open channel. U can't have the same RP experience found in the privacy of a RP-specific server as in other games (if they offer that option) to act your character to the fullest. Since the world is shared with any player (there's only one "world"), and because the game is free, there is a "young" aspect to the crowd playing the game, so I'd definetely say that hardcore RPing out in the open is something that would likely be spoiled real, real fast. "Hey, l00k at f00l RPing! Where's Puff the magic dragon L00ZR??? LMA0!!!" Light RPing, totally, that is possible I am sure.
Inside the instances: The picture changes once u are in an instance, obviously. In there, there's no one around but the select players in your party, so the world is yours to RP as you want.
There are no tradeskills/character-driven crafting if that's what u mean. There's no mounts/vehicles, and your pets are only visible when u step inside the instance so none of that "CharacterX sits quietly by his trusty tiger observing the wandering of the people around town" if you know what I mean. And so far, no fishing.
It's a great fast-paced combat game with some exploration value, that's how I see it.

And why would you resort to calling me a dumbass? Hmm all I did was point out that that isn't the only method of roleplay. Fishing in a 'game' isn't really roleplaying it's just simulated fishing The roleplay comes when you converse with the other player.
I never said Roleplay in GuildWars was perfect, it's not. It's not really geared for it. I was merely stating that you can roleplay if you so desire. Hell, use your immagination. Go stand around a lake and pretend you're fishing. Or better yet go wade in the lake and pretend you are swimming. Roleplaying is about imagination, it's not about the bits and bytes and pixels on your screen. Role playing is basically "acting". Which is 'pretending'.
While you may not like that aspect of roleplay it doesn't mean it's not available to you. I understand that it's not what you want. I was merely pointing out that if you WANT to it IS possible to roleplay. Calling me a dumbass for pointing out a provable, clearly defined FACT is just innane.
If what you are looking for is a game that is very strong in supporting 'roleplaying' then you should probably play SWG or UO or Ryzom or EQ2 or EVE (though you can't fish there either ) or hmm there are a lot of them... but those are the ones I found best suited for roleplaying. EQ2 is actually a VERY good roleplay environment... especially if you play on the RP servers.
(No, I don't recommend WoW, it's almost as "bad" as GuildWars for Roleplaying).
I find it hillarious that people consider "conversational roleplaying" somehow a lesser form of roleplay. You'd HATE tabletop pen and paper RPG's I guess... since all it is is conversational roleplay. LOL.

ok sorry for calling you a dumbass that was uncalled for.. anyways your right i do want more then just conversational roleplaying,.. and faking something is just dumb.. like your fishing idea.. i love what guildwars has to offer thats why i want it just wished it had roleplaying elements..(merchants would be nice)
how come WOW sucks for roleplaying? i never played it but it seems to have everything.. i even hear people hiring people for protection and even elf-strippers working for money if that aint roleplaying i dont know what is..
so , role play for you means , non combat professions
guildwars have 2 afaik , made by the population
1 - runner
2 - trades ( merchents ) buy and sell stuff
about wow , what i have eard is , the economie is ridiculus , for exemple , for people that make armors for sale , i think this is a profession , some materials are more expencive then the final armor made with those materials ..
in gw we cant buy or sell armors but imagine , if fow armo would cost 500 k ready to use , and if you want to craft it , you need 1.500 k ..
so what dumbass? i still want to fish and do liesure stuff and that to me is role-playing or fish with friends or something it dont all have to be conversational roleplaying! it its all as alot of u say conversatinal role-playing then that to me sucks.. i want the character to have a life "role-playing" in his world and with others.. WOW sucks for roleplaying primarily because the community is actually worse than GuildWars (shocker). It has things that would make you think roleplaying was really easy but the community is so filled with 'leet hax04 wannabe's' that finding anyone to roleplay with is pretty few and far between.
No, if you really want to roleplay the following MMO's are the ones I've found have all the "pieces" for it and the best 'communities' for it:
#1) EverQuest2, Roleplay Servers. I have never seen so many people intent on roleplay... you really can lose yourself there. I wish they had player cities.
#2) SWG... amazingly enough that's about the ONLY thing SOE hasn't managed to kill yet. NGE isn't a very good game, imo, but the roleplay is still solid once you manage to join up with folks who enjoy roleplaying. You'll have to get over the fact that everyone, well ok not everyone but around 75% of the players are, you meet is a Jedi though
#3) UO
#4) EVE
#5) Ryzom
WoW would be 'better' for roleplaying than GuildWars and a few others but I listed the ones I think are in the top 5 for pure 'roleplaying' if that's what you're really looking for. I'm sure others have varying opinions.

If role-playing is for you only gaining xp and lvl (and u r probably right :P) u won't find much of it in gw, but if u can think about rpg like pve there is plenty to do like getting cooler armor (but with the same stats as droks armor for game balance), cooler weapon (same as before), and titles which r hard to get like capuring 135 elites (for some1 who didn't played gw info: it takes very long time to do it cause 2 classes don't even have so many elites so u'll have to change secondary prof several times). In GW:F u can fight for ur alliance, conquer cities for them, fight for ur faction, try urself in challenge missions, and complete all quests, and missions on master level. But in factions u get xp almost everywhere and u have quickly 20lvl. If u could get xp as "slow" as in gw:p when u'd enter cantha with 20lvl char u wouldn't have much to do so u have shing jea monastery to get to lvl20, but remember that really hard pve begins after lvl20 ;]
GW is a combat MMORPG... you can roleplay in it but it's not programmed with a lot of features that encourage it. You *can* roleplay but it's not the best game for it. My friends and I roleplay when we play together, and sometimes in town with other roleplayers too. But most folks don't bother.

You can roleplay playing Tetris if you really want to.... but it's not encouraged either. Sorry I'm being a little sarcastic but true. The fact remains that no matter whatever acronym you use for Guild Wars (MMORPG, CORPG, ect) the RP still stand for role playing which Guild Wars is sorely lacking.
The way I look at Guild Wars is, it's a great game for people who want to get to bare bones fantasy fighting and not have to worry about any of the things that take imagination, time or immersion....which is cool sometimes you just want to fight.

i totaly desagree
you may feel immersed when fishing , but for me , i feel immersed when fighting my way with 7 team mates. if you read what npcs have to say , and if you see the cinematics when they apear , there is a story line you can folow , and feel very immersed . i got factions yesterday , all i can say is " WOW " amazing .. its like living a good movie.
Well, that is true there's a storyline, but what's that maybe a couple of months? From what I recall playing the focus was to pay someone to drag you through to get the best armor and race your way to to level 20. Start over and do the same over and over.
like mining, fishing, hunting.. pets etc..?? stuff to do when your not questin or pvp or somethin...?
honestly, if you consider mining fishing etc. "roleplaying" then that s a very warped defintion of the word. it's crafting, and doesn t have to do anything with roleplaying.
hunting: i guess that s in any game and a matter of definition. some people prolly would call it farming?
pets: 2 classes get combat pets and people get noncombat "minipets" as birthday presents for their chars
Roleplaying: Roleplaying your character and stayin in character with every word you say, is only really possible when you join a RP friendly guild or have a network of friends that always RP. In this respect (and only in this) Guildwars is the same as any other game i played. be it EQ, WoW, CoH, CoV, etc.
The only true "Roleplaying" game where every character you met actually roleplayed their character was a custom NWN persistant world run by private GMs. was only some 60 people total for the whole server and the RP illusion only worked because a) you had to "apply personally and prove your willingness to roleplay your character" b) all the l337 13 year olds didn t get in at all or got banned the first time they uttered WTF you re all g**"
summa summarum, with the right community/guild within the game Guildwars can be a wonderful medium for roleplaying. however you can t expect that every player that plays will roleplay, matter of fact, most don t, like in pretty much every multiplayer online rpg.
Crafting: there is crafting in Guildwars, only in the sense that you let an armor crafter craft armor for you by bringing him gold and materials.
no such system as a crafting system that involves mining smithing etc. that basically lets you increase your skill trough grinding - may the person who grinds the most be the most skilled crafter - (making 500 chain shirts to increase your skill to be able to make 1000 plate mails to be able to craft sword of blah 10 000 times to be able to... ) naturally such a system is not included in Guildwars, with it s basic premise of skill>over time - nor would such a system have a place in Guildwars.
From what I recall playing the focus was to pay someone to drag you through to get the best armor and race your way to to level 20. Start over and do the same over and over.
yeh, and the focus of Halflife was to enter a cheat for godmode so you can run to the end.

LOL.

Calling me a dumbass for pointing out a provable, clearly defined FACT is just innane.

ok sorry for calling you a dumbass that was uncalled for.. anyways your right i do want more then just conversational roleplaying,.. and faking something is just dumb.. like your fishing idea.. i love what guildwars has to offer thats why i want it just wished it had roleplaying elements..(merchants would be nice)
how come WOW sucks for roleplaying? i never played it but it seems to have everything.. i even hear people hiring people for protection and even elf-strippers working for money if that aint roleplaying i dont know what is..
so , role play for you means , non combat professions
guildwars have 2 afaik , made by the population

GW is a combat MMORPG... you can roleplay in it but it's not programmed with a lot of features that encourage it. You *can* roleplay but it's not the best game for it. My friends and I roleplay when we play together, and sometimes in town with other roleplayers too. But most folks don't bother.

i totaly desagree
you may feel immersed when fishing , but for me , i feel immersed when fighting my way with 7 team mates.
if you read what npcs have to say , and if you see the cinematics when they apear , there is a story line you can folow , and feel very immersed .
i got factions yesterday , all i can say is " WOW " amazing .. its like living a good movie.
like mining, fishing, hunting.. pets etc..?? stuff to do when your not questin or pvp or somethin...?
honestly, if you consider mining fishing etc.
Roleplaying:
Roleplaying your character and stayin in character with every word you say, is only really possible when you join a RP friendly guild or have a network of friends that always RP. In this respect (and only in this) Guildwars is the same as any other game i played. be it EQ, WoW, CoH, CoV, etc.
The only true "Roleplaying" game where every character you met actually roleplayed their character was a custom NWN persistant world run by private GMs. was only some 60 people total for the whole server and the RP illusion only worked because
a) you had to "apply personally and prove your willingness to roleplay your character"
b) all the l337 13 year olds didn t get in at all or got banned the first time they uttered WTF you re all g**"
summa summarum, with the right community/guild within the game Guildwars can be a wonderful medium for roleplaying. however you can t expect that every player that plays will roleplay, matter of fact, most don t, like in pretty much every multiplayer online rpg.
Crafting:
there is crafting in Guildwars, only in the sense that you let an armor crafter craft armor for you by bringing him gold and materials.
no such system as a crafting system that involves mining smithing etc. that basically lets you increase your skill trough grinding - may the person who grinds the most be the most skilled crafter - (making 500 chain shirts to increase your skill to be able to make 1000 plate mails to be able to craft sword of blah 10 000 times to be able to... ) naturally such a system is not included in Guildwars, with it s basic premise of skill>over time - nor would such a system have a place in Guildwars.

From what I recall playing the focus was to pay someone to
drag you through to get the best armor and race your way to to level
20. Start over and do the same over and over.
yeh, and the focus of Halflife was to enter a cheat for godmode so you can run to the end.
