Greetings people, my brother was looking to buy a new gaming pc and he found this offer;

It's a used system, from a "trusted" seller (has positive feedback on a trusted nationwide forum)

i5 6600k
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
COOLER Enermax (ETS-T40-TB)
Gainward GeForce GTX1080 8GB Phoenix GS (3644)
2xAvexir Core Series, Red LED, DDR4-2400, CL16 - 8 GB ( AVD4UZ124001608G-1COR )
SSD 240GB
PSU seasonic M12II-850 EVO
CASE CASE SUPERCASE MIRROR MI06A BLACK

for 900 euros (about 1000 usd)

Also, very important, what to look when buying a used system? Is there something we can do to check?

Thank you very much! Any help/insight is appreciated!

Sandbox MMORPGs that are not very well-known but definitely worth a look:

Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom  server)

...for that kind of money you build likely better system as a new one.

Seems like a pretty decent setup for that money. The 1080GTX is a very nice card which is already around €450-€500.

Don't really know where to look at exact that everything looks fine and clean. Check the vents I for dust. Check for loose parts I guess?

I wouldn't get it.  Not at that price. To get roughly equivalent modern parts might cost you:

    CPU:  $140
    Motherboard:  $80
    GPU:  $400
    Memory:  $90
    SSD:  $70
    PSU:  $80
    Case:  $50

That comes to about $1100 new if you include an OS license.  You're getting a slight discount for it being used, and also have the advantage that it comes assembled for you rather than having to screw parts together yourself.

But it's possible that the reason someone is trying to get rid of it is that it's having problems that the original user wants to be rid of.  If it blue screens once per week, for example, the reseller might not know that.  Even if it isn't having any such problems, it probably already has about 2 1/2 years worth of wear and tear on it.  Or possibly the equivalent of a lot more than that if it spent a year mining cryptocurrency around the clock at the height of the bubble.

Is there a particular site that I could check those prices and maybe order them from there? (keep in mind I'm in EU)
May can you could also suggest a build for the budget that he has (~1k usd)?

Upon further review, I double-counted something, and my approximate total should be around $1000 including an OS.  That's before taxes, though.  If you're pricing things in Euros, you're probably in the EU, and VAT is probably a much bigger hit than any analogous taxes would be in the US.

As to where to buy it, where exactly are you buying from?  That is, which country?

Also, are you capable of assembling parts yourself?

On the same budget, the performance you get building new won't be quite as good as what you'd get from that used rig, but it will have a lot less wear and tear on it, meaning a lot less likely to give you problems.

I'm from Greece. I'm not capable of assembling parts my self, but I believe that I could get a friend to do it, or maybe pay someone, I guess it would not much of a cost.

Find me a site in Greece that sells computer parts and let's see what the prices there look like.  It's possible that the prices will be a lot higher than in the US for a variety of reasons.

Also, does the used computer price include shipping?  If he wants another $100 to ship it to you, that affects its cost quite a bit.

Those are the main ones. For the items that I've checked, yeah, the prices are a lot higher.
And there is no need for shipping, we are in the same town, its 900 total.

Those prices aren't nearly as bad as I feared.  I don't know Greek, so I'm relying on Google Translate, which garbles some things.  Fortunately, brand names and model numbers don't need to be translated.

It looks like Skroutz is basically a shopping search engine of sorts that links to other sites.  That's what I looked through, and this comes to a little over 760 Euros, though that's probably excluding shipping and doesn't include an OS license:

    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/14650949/AMD-Ryzen-5-2600-Box.html
    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/15598886/Asrock-B450M-Pro4.html
    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/17546025/Gainward-GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-6GB-Pegasus-4375.html
    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/13785263/Crucial-MX500-500GB.html
    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/12518015/Seasonic-Focus-Plus-550-Gold.html
    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/8394569/Antec-GX200-Window.html
    https://www.skroutz.gr/s/14526602/G-Skill-Value-16GB-DDR4-2666MHz-F4-2666C19D-16GNT.html

That's probably in the ballpark of your stated budget.  Prices on European sites tend to include VAT, though I didn't see anywhere that it explicitly said that VAT is included.  If it's not, then it could be much worse prices than I thought.  I assume that you're fluent in Greek, so you'll have to parse through the details there.

As compared to the used computer, the CPU has six cores rather than four and has SMT enabled, but they're slightly slower cores, making it debateable whether the CPU is better or worse.  The video card is a little slower, but not by a huge margin; it's more comparable to a GTX 1070 than a GTX 1080.  The SSD is double the capacity, and likely faster, too.  The power supply is better quality but lower wattage; on net, it's more appropriate to your needs.  The memory capacity is the same.  And most importantly, the parts would be brand new rather than having a bunch of wear on them already.

Godamn Quizzical, you 're always so helpful! Thank you very much for that insight.
I guess I could look more into it, but as for now I lack the basic knowledge of what is compatible with which, and what works best combined with something else...

Anyway, as I said at the initial post, it's a build for my brother, so I'm going to suggest to him what you wrote and I guess he will make a reasonable desicion. I guess we could also wait a bit and see about any sales of the items (or similar ones) that you listed.

Also something else, at skroutz.gr review section, regarding the Asrock motherboard, there are some people leaving negative feedback and complaining its reliability.

    Thank you again!

Be warned that the parts I linked are based on prices today.  Prices tend to bounce around a lot, and parts that are a good deal today likely won't be in a month or two.  If you want six months to buy, then it's best to come back for a new list when you're ready to buy.
