World of Warcraft: My Journey So Far - MMORPG.com

Hello! My name is Robin Baird, and I’ll be writing the World of Warcraft Column every other week. Since I’ve mostly written about other MMOs on MMORPG, I thought it would be a good idea to give everyone a brief outline of my history in WoW so you can better understand the perspective I have on the game and where I come from on things. Hello Robin. I read your story here and it sounds very familiar. My first question I guess is why are you doing this column? What do you want the readers to get from this column? It's a 14+ year old game. There have been millions of columns about it. My own impression is that WoW is not doing very well right now and I myself quit a few months back. I have no plans to ever go back at this point. Too much change over the years and too much disappointment. I can't even bring myself to watch Taliesin & Evitel and/or Bellular videos anymore. It's hard to watch what I consider to be almost shill like behavior over the game (though I do understand it's their bread and butter and they are usually funny videos). I also notice a pretty common theme on this site that folks around here are disillusioned with WoW as well, yet I always see WoW as one of the trending games on this site. My inner conspiracy theorists makes me feel like they might be paying folks to say good things about the game. I am curious though why, if our backgrounds with the game are so similar, you are not disappointed with the game right now too?

The column might very well be to show why World of Warcraft still offers some fun, even if it's not from the perspective of someone who would prefer the early years. It may very well still offer fun for people. Maybe for people who wouldn't have liked the early years.

Your post seems to say that because you can't see any merit in the game that others shouldn't either and therefore why write about it?

Also, if you have an inner conspiracy theorist inside you then that says quite a bit. Most conspiracy theories are nonsense and seem to come from a place of distrust and fear if not paranoia. I think it's ok for Robin to explore a 14 year old game and talk about its good and its bad. Surely the experience now will be different from the previous years and that could be of interest.

Hmm, I didn't intend for my post to come off as offensive. I was just genuinely curious what his columns were going to be about. Your reply to my post reminds me of why face to face conversations are so much better, in my opinion, than attempting to infer something from a post.

Fair enough and thanks for the clarification. I wouldn't say I thought it offensive but it seemed a bit "something" when you were asking "why."

One of the things I think about often is how much the game has changed and how much my playstyle has changed over time. I personally wouldn't want to go back to vanilla systems because I can't play as much as I did back then. My life is very different now to so playing for 8+ hours most days isn't an option really. So I generally think the way WoW has evolved overtime has largely been positive, at least for me. For the most part I can do the things I enjoy with my friends and ignore the things I'd rather not do. And for me that's huge.

That said I don't love everything that's been changed. The way they implemented the heart of azeroth neck was not good, and trying to grind my way from heart lvl 40 to 47 to unlock gear traits sucks. They will be updating it for the next tier but right now it feels terrible. Also I'm pretty annoyed with the state of professions, as a leatherworkekr I have very little I can sell or even just make to help out my guildies and that feels bad. Also, I'm mostly enjoying the story and I'm interested to see where they go with things but I also have some serious concerns about where it seems to be going. I also get really frustrated with the constant creation of new cool thing in one expansion only for it to be completely discarded in the next. There's other things too but that's the general gist.

Right now my general plan is to talk about the things I enjoy and know about, poke some at the things which need to be changed, and whatever seems interesting. Like I said I'm open to suggestions as well if there's something people feel like should be talked about but hasn't been so far.

I played WoW from the open betas of NA and Europe Vanilla, but went a totally different way than you, Robin Baird, I was never a fan of PvP and never became one (although I had my share of PvP experience in Vanilla WoW and even reached Commander rank back then to get an epic War Tiger, but that was my main goal and once I got it I scraped my PvP carrier and never came back to it). My main interest was always in PvE aspect, maining Holy Priest therefore I think I would mostly enjoy reading in your column about your motivation and your passion for PvP - it's interesting for me to find out what drives the hardcore PvPers. I have some clues and understand that most of the time PvP fans are competitive players who see the game as a form of sport and enjoy feeling of competition with other E-Athletes, but it would be interesting to read about personal experience first hand.

By the way, one more similarity with you is that I stopped playing WoW on MoP expansion - this was the first and only expansion I did not buy. I came back to WoW on Warlords and Legion expansions for a short period of times, but it wasn't a big thing anymore. Did not buy Battle for Azeroth yet and still doubt if I should as reviews are not inspiring me to return to the game, but I will surely be looking for Classic during summer and may be then I'll try out BfA.

But anyway this is not about me, this is about your column, Robin Baird, and I'd like to read more about your experiences.

I'm almost identical to you, but I quit in the beginning of Cataclysm due to some stupid irl (girl) drama that hit the guild. Came back for end of Pandaria, did my Challenge dungeons and went back to bed. Then properly came back to play Hellfire Citadel/Tanaan Jungle of WoD.

Now I'm still playing, more or less the same guild. Sad to see so many players I've known for nearly 3-13 years now just quitting as the game is not as enjoyable as Legion - more like Legion 0.5 after we had the real thing. Still, we have managed every Ahead of the Curve since the guild was made and run a lot of M+.
I'm just so sad I keep losing friends I played with, one per new raid and downtime basically, (some I've known for 13 years - those who started playing again and I invited them over) and the trail to quit seems to be more and more apparent now.

I also liked to read your column Robin - hope to see many more.
