Inside EverQuest: Humble Beginnings

PCGamer just did a great article on the development of EverQuest.  I'm not a fan of Smedley for other personal reasons, but his struggle to continue to support what is known as arguably the greatest MMO of all time is a powerful tale.

EverQuest was not the greatest MMO of all time..  Asheron's call 1 was.

Asheron's call was WAY ahead of its time..

It had better graphics than EQ..
It had the biggest game world ever at the time.
    It was zoneless/seamless
    It had fast action combat
innovative magic system using components to create spells  / skill based

EQ was pure shit compared to AC.

The only reason why AC was not the king was because they didn't make it a traditional RPG with the Elves and Dwarves and Goblins [mod edit]..…  and Microsoft didn't give a shit about it.

Come on man I said arguably, but you didn't say "in my opinion".

Plus the point of the article was not whether Everquest was better than AC. The point was to discuss the unique challenges facing anyone attempting to bring games like these to market in 1999.

Fascinating stuff and thank you for posting this.

@Scolioz If you actually bothered to read the article you would have kept your shallow post out of this. This has nothing to do with "my game is better than your game". It is an interesting account of how the first 3d MMORPG came to be and a worthwhile read it was. It should be celebrated.

Thanks for sharing that gem, @Hashbrick :)

I had seen bits and pieces of the story here and there. This article wrapped them all up nicely. A fun read trip down memory lane :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

Nice article.  Sad that EQ really took MMORPG down the shallow route of gear and progression over virtual worlds.

It did have gear and progression, but Norrath is still one of my favorite online worlds. The faction system alone made it a living world for me. EQ was also filled with lots of non-combat skills, like many different languages.

I do agree that a lot of the emphasis the players put on it was leveling and gear grabbing, but EQ was quite deep, in my opinion, way back when :)

Same here I knew the overall tale (how it was basically treated as garbage during development), but they get into some very fine details that you'd never know.  It's not everyday I can praise PCGamer for a good article, but they really did their research and investigation on this one.

It reminded me of Robert Altman and the making of the movie M*A*S*H. Altman knew the film was unconventional and controversial, so he did everything he could to keep it secret and hide it during production, even deliberately selecting the worst sets. Several of the actors were convinced the movie would ruin their careers - until it finally released to wildly unexpected success.

Gaming refinement kind of make what we have inevitable.  Never thought the genre would be so formulated.  I mean much if the first 5 years or so was shot in the dark.

2 different types of MMORPGs. Can't really compare.

This is sort of the point. It was a time when developers actually made games out of vision and not just copying another trend.

There's is absolutely no doubt which game impacted the genre more. The answer is EQ ... and this is coming from an AC player who never played EQ even once.
